Eberechi Eze

LOADS…. As we often don’t actually get the player in the end! 😉

Though I guess it is difficult to factor in the money we end up wasting on fourth choice panic buys instead? 😉
🤣

I take it we have some agreement...
Sometimes that is the case. I’m not convinced we would’ve got Eze for example (though maybe Arsenal would not have matched our bid if Haivertz didn’t get injured?)

Players do have to weigh up the prospect of definite jam today versus possible jam tomorrow though. Xavi Simons for example could wait for a possible trebling of his wages at Chelsea that might not come about or agree a move to another club and earn 2.5 times his wages guaranteed. Good players will often wait a while for the biggest clubs but not forever. The agent can also get impatient waiting for his pay day.
I agree it's sometimes a factor, but mostly not.

You don't get the point do you? Nobody is busting a fuse because we didn't get a player... it's part and parcel of football as you have illustrated. Only difference is that those two teams made an offer, it was not accepted and a few days later moved onto other targets - and got them. All you need to do is look at their recruitment this summer... imaginative, early and at decent prices. No drama; no daily will he/won't he.

The issue that many have is that we f***** around for weeks trying to penny pinch and then either end up paying as much as the initial fee or getting gazumped in the process and by the time this happens we would be desperate and running our time. We were apparently happy to pay 60M + 7M, which is practically the same as the release clause that Eze had.... when we knew from multiple reports that he would go to the Arse if he had the opportunity and we gave them the chance.
Levy knocked City back for Kane in 2021. City didn't sign a striker in that window and signed Alvarez in January 2022, an unproven player from River Plate who they immediately loaned back, for ~20m. The Ronaldo interest was in the same window.

In 17/18, they expressed interest in VVD but he went to The Dippers. The only centre back they signed that season was Danilo for about a third of the money. He stayed two seasons and didn't even play in half their games. Hardly like for like.

So City hardly just went out and paid the money for who they needed and backed the manager with what he wanted in any of those instances.

Without researching the others, Liverpool famously bought no one last summer after being rejected by Zubimendi.

How do you know we were penny pinching? I've seen this trotted out a lot but don't know that it's been verified.

City didn't get Kane, Van Dijk or Ronaldo.

Liverpool didn't get Caicedo, Bellingham or Zubimendi.

That's how football transfers go. The hysteria over transfers in this day and age is nuts. It seems to take precedence over actual results at times.
I agree.

I want us to fail at getting players over the line in a way. The only way for that not to happen would be to target players who aren't good enough for teams that could "swoop in".

It happens and what matters mostly to me is what the plan then is. We need multiple good targets for any position we want to improve in. With rare exceptions I don't want us overpaying to get a target.

Painful and frustrating when it happens, but that's football. Even more so when it happens twice in a window for players for a similar role. But still. On to the next one. Have a plan, stick to it.

I doubt you’d find 2 or 3 percent of Arsenal fans that would swap, whereas I think a pretty large majority of Spurs fans would do so.
I think it’s likely the same on both sides
I know my Everton and United supporting mates rates Vucario very highly and think Reya is good but no better than that
It’s all about opinions
I like my keeper making saves and not getting mugged with the ball or lobbed from the half way line

Do you really know fans of other clubs that rate Vicario? Pretty much everyone I talk to think that he is a poor keeper, irrespective of who they support. He almost cost us the Europa final with one of his typical fumbles when having to deal with a ball in the air.

Yeah I do
Wouldn’t say it otherwise

We have fans who think Johnson is brick despite him being the top scorer last year .. it’s outcome based that I like to judge on
Vicario gains points with saves that other keepers can’t always make.

The grey area in your logic is that word "over-paying". There is clearly some subjectivity in the valuation piece. I would say that Rice was worth £100m to Arsenal but some would argue his status as a £100m player. Then there is Grealish who most would argue wasn't a £100m players. Caicedo was bought for £115m as another example.

To me it feels a little like houses. Those 2 bed terrace houses get some pretty accurate valuations. Supply and demand dictate there are so many sellers and buyers in that space. The slight differences might be whether the houses have a second bathroom, conservatory or a garage. As you move up the stack with houses it always feels like the valuation accuracy decreases.

I sometimes question how good Spurs are at valuing players to get the football results we need.

It is subjective, but still a factor.

I think the club seems at least ok at it.
