Djed Spence

I think the point is that we don't know what the reason was for him not being used more sooner.

However Ange is managing Spence he's getting great performances out of him now so I doubt there are big issues.

Worth mentioning that while he is 24 now and not exactly a kid he's still fairly young. And at this level and against PL opposition fairly inexperienced. Also essentially new to this system and role this season. And he's had injury problems.

For a player like that to be integrated a bit slowly, taking around half a season to be integrated really isn't a big deal. Compared to what Ange did with VdV, Kinsky and some others it's a bit "slow". But nothing unusual.
But if Spence had been deployed a bit more often the chances are Udogie would not have been run into the ground and would have been less likely to have picked up the injuries he has this season.

Yes, that is a very real possibility.

1. Ange rates Spence. And he rated Spence either for the here and now or some point in the future this summer. Or he wouldn't be here.
2. Ange does things for a reason.

So when despite the obvious risk of overplaying he didn't use Spence more earlier I'm assuming he had his reasons, and we don't know what they were.

Not sure any manager can complete the full picture until they release the players into first team games though.

Ironically, the one place we haven't seen Spence play much so much is his own position at RB. Only 2 starts there apparently.

How would you view Conte's treatment of Spence?

No doubt Conte is pulling his hair out with regret whilst he is top of the Italian league. "Ahh Spence has managed some good performances in a team in 12th place, what an idiot I was!!!!!"

In fairness at least he was up front and clear on his signals, as opposed to the mixed signals from Ange, here's a new contract but you're also not in the europa league squad. Conte wanted a RWB to challenge for the league and needed Porro at the start and was let down by the board.

However, this thread should be more focused on the djedemption and his perseverance to crack on through the flimflam and surrounding conjecture/ speculation. He has earned his place in the team and long may it continue. Like others, I echo the view that Spence has got some legs in an RW position too, but we probably don't want to knacker him and Porro at the same time....

True, but sometimes he gets things wrong, so he ain't perfect. If he was I doubt he would have selected both Romero and Micky against Chelsea when they were obviously not fully fit.

Conte never gave a flying fudge about this club, so I'm sure you're right.

Yes, this thread should be focussed on the Djedemption. BTW, Ange was not solely responsible for the Europa squad; that was a huge error of squad numbers and requirements which forced our hand re: homegrown players.

Djed was excellent yet again.
Looks like he grew up playing cage football i.e. knows what to do, has a trick, can play short or long, has some fight, just a very good footballer.

Compared to some very vanilla players like Bren Johnson who can only play in straight lines like an Etch-a-Sketch, Johnson is always either straight down the line or straight across, no variation, but players like Djed have all the tools available and can pick a paintbrush as needed.

I actually much prefer Spence to Udogie and Porro for the defensive side of things and the vision to play a long ball from deep when the situation is right.

We get into less situations where the CBs have to double up as fullbacks and we have a mini playmaker from deep

Never doubted the ability, but the game is about more than ability ...

Something has clicked in him, maybe it's the having to leave country (can grow you up fast) or just the maturity of age .. he's better now.
Indeed. I do find it funny that two managers before Ange chose not to play Spence, yet the one who actually has is the one getting criticised for not playing him earlier. It's pretty obvious that Spence had previous issues outside his actual footballing ability, even during his loan at Leeds his contract was terminated because Farke had issues with his attitude - I didn't see anyone on here then complaining about Ange not playing him. Ange sent him out on loan in Italy, and he likely matured over there and we are now reaping the benefits. But the fact Ange is now getting criticised by some on here for not using him earlier is hilarious.....

Conte got criticism for his treatment of him, way more than Ange has for not playing him earlier from what I can see.

It may be that Ange "should" have used him more before, but we cannot know.

What we can know is that under Ange Spence has gone from essentially looking done at the club to putting in performances worthy of a first choice player. In half a season. From being a player racking up a series of half successful loans at smaller clubs to looking a natural starting games and big games for us.

If that's not a very good reason to give credit to Ange and the player I don't know what is.
