Djed Spence

Thought he was poor defensively today in the first half but did well second half.

I’d still have him over Porro when everyone’s available. He’s been very good on the whole since he’s come in which is great to see as I thought he might never make it here.
 
Yeah, I felt worried for him after the first few minutes of the 2nd half, being shoehorned in CB, He had a couple moments but then he settled down and did well I thought.

I mean, Fingers crossed we never need to play him at CB again but the lad deserves credit for the way he has come in and made an impact in the last month or so. I can't wait to see him start at RB with our full side out in the future.
 
They say you should take your chance when given the opportunity. He’s coming in and he’s done a really good job.

But the question is, is it enough for everyone to finally move on from this supposed attitude issue he has?

Don't think he was getting any help from werner who was the worst player on the pitch imo.
I'm not usually a critic of timo, he is what he is, but that was bad today.

Ange seems to think he can play many games for him either side
I think it’s short sighted and we should get a left back in

Said the same thing. There is something that is wrong about having these right footers (previously Gray in EL) in the LB slot. The positions they take and the body shapes defensively doesn't look good. I agree with GB above that Spence's defending at LB wasn't up to much.

Just pay the money for Mitchell and close this topic.

We had only Kulu with a left foot today

Think being left or right footed is less of an issue for a full back in this system and in the modern game. Come up against just as many inverted wingers as traditional wingers and being on the "wrong side" is less of an issue defensively. And in this system less overlapping and crossing from a running position wide.

Think he's done well both on the left and right. Looking forward to us having enough fit players to be able to rotate the full backs a bit. Perhaps even sub on fresh legs at full back and not just injury management.

I'm still not there on this one.

I've commented throughout the season how Gray and Spence have looked awkward as right footers at left back. I even made that comment again in the recent OMT thread about Spence. His positioning and body shape was all wrong a few times.

I'd much rather have a leftie like Mitchell over any of our backup LB's. It all just happens more naturally.

Tend to agree about Spense, he looked a little lost as wherr his posistion against the attackers were yesterday. Hope he can settle as he gets more chances.

He's a good player, they are all being asked to do a bit too much, out of position, with others out of position, in a system that exposes you on a good day.

Another indication that our recruitment really has improved in last 3 years or so, struggling to find a real dud.

Think more experience playing there along with coaching can help with that. Not directly related to being right footed as such.

I think another full back would be useful and if we're going for one only natural to get a left sided one of possible.

Mitchell has looked good when I've seen him. Unsure about how well he suits the inverted role?

Yeah, in some ways we can't have a manager who won't compromise on his tactical system on a Saturday afternoon, but then goes and sanctions player purchases during the week that don't fit it. I'm not sure it's that black and white with Mitchell though. From what I know, he's being encouraged to be more adventurous and has stepped up levels in the last year. He could be more suited than we think.

He has been absolutely terrific against us in the last 2 seasons and looked the best full-back on the pitch. Averaging 6.8 for Palace in a tough season, where his head could easily be turned due to his contract status. Sounds like a player Ange would love to me, which probably means he'll be holding up a black and white shirt by the end of the week.

Yeah I genuinely don't know how suited he would be to that role. If he's well suited to it, great. If not, stay away.
 
I believe Spence is going to have to wear a larger pair of shorts for the replay, so he can more easily fit Salah in his pocket.

BRILLIANT today in defence and general play.

Also funny at the end when he was jogging up the wing waiting for "super fast" Werner to burst forwards, but Werner couldn't break away so Spence had to stop and point and play him in.
Then he got it back so he was just pointing at what Werner should do, absolutely schooling him like a child.
Eventually he had to do it himself.
