Djed Spence

I think he needs to start some league games. That's all.
I get him being understudy to Udogie as he has shown he can do a job there and better skill set for it than say Davies.

What I don't get is Gray being used as the backup RB, its not just when Spence has been injured. Spence looks the better player at FB, and Gray deserves to show what he can do at CM - it's not like our CMs are pulling up any trees....

It's mostly been when Spence has been injured and because Spence isn't registered for the EL I think?

What games have Gray gotten at right back that Spence was available for and not used at left back?

Fair question and to be fair due to Spence availability issues for various reasons its not a big sample size. Looking at it from what has happened with Spence:

Vs Everton at home Spence replaced Udogie, vs Coventry Gray started RB, Spence was sub and replaced Udogie, home to Brentford Porro was replaced with Gray when Spence was on the bench, away at Man U Spence replaced Udogie. Only example of Spence getting game time at RB (that I could see) was the opening game of the season in the 90th minute replacing Porro....

Not registered for EL, along with Reg.

So we play Gray as LB, rather than as DM, being the only actual DM we have...

It's insane.

Gray played all of last season as a RB - I'd imagine the plan when signing him would have been to start him off in that position and go from there as he develops.
Not going to pretend to have watched all of his games, but I saw him away to Chelsea last season and he was playing CM and got man of the match. Looking at transferMarket it says he played many games at CM....

My view on Spence is that he's still got it all to prove, but needs to be given a chance to do so.......and in his preferred position, right back.

My concern though, is that he may not be suited to the way that Ange plays his full-backs. My guess is that Ange and his coaches are helping him to adapt first, before they expose him more. That was part of why he signed the new deal.

Then we buy the new LB and have 2 natural players for both full-back roles, and the midfielder Gray as utility.

He played CM vs Chelsea and was exceptional

The answer is here - https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/archie-gray/leistungsdaten/spieler/922693/plus/0?saison=2023

30 games at RB
19 games at CM (10 at CM, 6 at DM and 3 at AM)

Interestingly, none at LB or centre half.

I'm just going by reports from when he signed, which said that he played RB for them last season and got in to the Championship team of the season as RB. I'm sure, given that his natural position is CM then he will have played some games there

From what i have read, i thought it was a mixture of both RB and DM, maybe i was mistaken, but I don't think I am.

On Whoscored.com it is down as 30 league games as a RB, 13 as DM/CM and 4 as 'sub' - not sure that changes the point of my post but you're right he played some games in DM
