Cann we make the top 4 or 5?

We're 3 points off 4th and 5th. 5 points off 2nd and 3rd. Of course we can still do it.

I agree if we can get and keep our main players fit Romero, VDV etc then we have a shout, personally my main hope is that we can win a cup [ it may then shut up some of those who are always banging on about how badly run we are, i doubt it will though:worried:].
Yes it will depend on injuries in part. Especially as what will hopefully be good cup runs will only lead to more fixture congestion.

I saw Spurs post a calendar for December and it's Thursday - Sunday for the entire month. I got curious and started looking up how many extra rest days our opponents had before each game. It's the Sunday games where we've only had two days that's the killer.

T Roma -1
S Fulham +4
T Bournemouth +1
S Chelsea +1
T Rangers 0
S Southampton +4
T Man U 0
S Liverpool +1
T Forest +1
S Wolves 0

So your saying playing in a Thursday is fudging us up
Because I fully agree
Now people will say that CL do it but of course the English sides in the CL are flying in the league now aren’t they (obvs Villa and City excluded)
At least we can see that the teams in the EL are doing well in the league (ah that’s just us and United)
And of course there are extra games in Europe this season
But the reason Europa is toxic is the change around and travel to places much further away that you get in the CL

Cheers.

I think what the biggest "killer" is when we have that Thursday - Sunday thing and the other team has the full week.

Hopefully in the upcoming games the difference in exhaustion and preparation time being less than it has been will have a positive impact.

I agree.

The thing about the EL too is that for a club like ours (in the PL/one of the biggest leagues) the money isn't a big difference maker either. With the CL you get enough money that it can properly influence how big and good your squad is. EL doesn't do that for a team that must by necessity get PL level players for PL level fees and wages for the squad for it to make real sense.

But, we still mostly need to learn to deal with it better, because the reality of it won't change.

It’s travel and recovery time though too
I have heard a lot of players talk about difference.
David Moyes spoke about it on MOTD2
Fans just say it’s the same break between games as CL but that’s only true if you mr travelling 90 mins on a plane and back that night
You don’t normally get that in the Europa

For sure. I was just adding to your points, not contradicting them.

Anyone of a nervous disposition, best look away now!

We have lost three and drawn one of our last four League games following a Thursday night Euro fixture:

Brighton 2-3 following Ferencvaros
Palace 0-1 following AZ Alkmaar
Ipswich 1-2 (score corrected) following Galatasaray
Fulham 1-1 following AS Roma

Coincidence? Don't think so.

I would take that on board IF we didn't have a stream of crap results and performances that go way back to last season when we didn't have European participation as an excuse. In fact, often the longer we've had between games the worse we've looked...

True enough, it happens the other way round too. But, no getting away from it, we have mostly looked totally drained second half following a Euro. Let's not forget also the PL teams we've played have all had up to eight days to recover and prepare against us.

Maybe all it needs is just one critical extra day's recovery to make the difference?

Definitely not a coincidence imo.

Slightly different with Bournemouth now also having games in quicker succession unlike some of those other teams we've struggled against post EL fixtures. Generally this kind of situation should favour the team more used to having a lot of games. But the cumulative effects of a lot of games over time and injuries are still factors of course.

It can definitely be true that both having too many games too quickly and that having too long between games can be negative.

It can also be true that last season (second half) we were really inconsistent and that we're inconsistent this season, but for different reasons.

Not much in fotball that should be an "excuse", I think something can have a partial explanation without being an "excuse".

But probably depends also on how one uses the word excuse.

I really don’t are about qualifying for the Champions league, you only get there if you deserve to be there and the way we are at the moment we would get smashed every week. We need to focus on winning a trophy rather than hoping to make up the numbers in the champions league.

I’d be happy with a 12th place finish and a Europa league win.
