Cann we make the top 4 or 5?

We’re comfortably the strongest side in that cup
But it’s cup football of course
And there are away games
I don't think we are.

We may have best players, but it clear we struggle to play as team, and any pressure, we crumble.

We will struggle against any half decent team.

Roma are going to give us a run for our money.

Unless we go on a storming run towards end of season I don't see us getting top 5. I think our strong start last season helped that, then we dropped off. We have already lost 4 and not gone to Anfield, Arse, Chelsea and loads of places I can't be arsed to list

The cups are where the focus should be
They are all winnable
As much as I would love us to win something. I don't think we will this season. We could get to final and have a performance of either Palace or First half Brighton. And put into that we would need the luck of the gods and stars to align.....

We should have course
But we could also put in a united away one (and I know there shut but didn’t beat them and West Ham has massive, massive luck)
We don’t know

Ah yes, Roma are quite the team - just been spanked 5-1 by Fiorentina so does your logic only apply to us?

The fact is on paper we are one of the best teams, and the teams in this competition are of a decent level but no one we should or would be scared of. Not saying we will win it but it's a cup competition and we have a decent shout - it's just negative Spurs tinted glasses to claim any half decent team in the competition will beat us when none of them are pulling up any trees themselves.....

Lazio are better than them and they will run out of steam
Bilbao will take it seriously with the final being at home
United may still get through and with a new coach and £200m down in January may be better

Tbf last season in the EL at this point would anyone have known how good Atalanta and Leverkusen were? There could be a couple of similar teams this year

Wouldn't it be nice if the focus was on us playing well. Implementing the plan, and not worrying unduly about results?

The players need to feel free to develop this way of playing. If fearful it compromises our intent. We have to go through the mistakes to learn and develop. I don't really care about position in the league. I care about performance and team development. If I can see progress, then I am less concerned with results.

They were always recognised as two of the better teams in it coming 5th/6th the previous season and Atalanta going for CL that season and obviously Leverkusen challenging for the title. Of course there is always a dark horse or two, and I'm not expecting us to win it but at the same time I don't see it as we will 'struggle against any half decent team'....

We’re definitely capable of getting to the latter stages (quarter finals/semis etc). If you get that far it’s anyone’s tournament. Like you, I don’t think we will win it but we’re in with a shout if we actually turn up and take this competition seriously.

Manu under fergie got spanked 6-1, does that mean they was brick

Out of interest, can you see progress? I keep thinking I can, but that is perhaps because I'm benchmarking against a 23/24 team that had injuries, suspensions, players away at tournaments etc. Spurs have been pretty fit and healthy this season. They've done the business in the EL and have had a few convincing PL performances. However, the low points prove that Ange's plan hasn't clicked yet or perhaps has its tactical flaws.

I'm not sure we need the players thinking their manager's plan is flawed though. Us fans can debate the strengths and weaknesses all day long but the players need to be "all in" and trust Ange. I like your thought process. It means that if the players execute to what Ange is saying, he will be good with the players when the less favourable results come along. He hasn't been recently based on the little comments he's made about their lack of execution.

It's basic probability that we are very unlikely to win it. I don't imagine we'd have a greater than 50% chance of winning it until we make it to the final, that's just cup competitions.

Nonetheless we are surely one of, or the most, likely to win it.

Well so far this season.... 😅

Unless we improve our defending i can't see it.

There also doesn't seem enough good tacklers in the squad to slow, stop attacks earlier than when attackers get to our penalty box

The big advancement - from Conte - is our passing. All the way back to Poch, our passing hasn't been at the level of a top-calibre side. Whilst the improvements are smaller this season, there is certainly progress. How we combat an energetic press like Palace's and when teams like the goons go man for man, are work in progress. We need to be ready as a side to combat these scenerios, and do better. Especially after a European game, teams like Palace will look to out-run us.

There are those moments when we play it around the back without conviction. You almost know what is coming next, before we lose the ball. We don't always moving the ball fast enough and effectively enough (that is what Ange is frustrated with). However, this season we often manage to play through the middle of the park. In the last 5 or so games we have played out from via midfield. A player who can pop the ball off (one-touch often) to another player. playing into midfield first makes a world of difference and opens up space and makes us more dynamic. What Palace succeeded in doing, more often than not, was stop us using a midfielder to lay off passes and make space. But is it better than last season - yes. There is an advancement on how we used to play. That we are now developing an ability to lay off passes and play out through the middle is positive even if it costs us in the short term. We must keep perfecting, and having a plan to counteract an energetic press or man for man marking.

For me, the main concern is our forward play. Kane and Son were such clinical finishers. Atm we have several players who show nerves and inexperience in attack. We need to get into coldly slotting the ball into the corner of the net. Losing a goal against Palace is not an issue, failing to score 2-3 is.
