I don't care for goal numbers, that's never been something that impresses me.

Woo! You really mean that? I too love to see rounded footballers but there are times when what you need most is someone to stick the ball in the back of the net. Think Jimmy Greaves, Clive Allen, Gary Lineker, Jermain Defoe, all excellent strikers but not especially noted for their build-up play or all-round contribution.

Lineker was a striker. A striker can just score goals cause that's he's job.

If Johnson was playing up front it would be different, but as stated above his attribute set seems to be the opposite of what's required to make Ange's system successful. When I made the point about carrying him it was an observation of how little he does in other areas, it's not even a dig at his abilities.

The only wingers who get goals and assists in this league… the top league in the world right now are salah and saka … and the penalties with both help the numbers (and salah is the best player in the world right now)
There are some who are doing a bit of both but they aren’t getting 25 goals and assists
As poor as people may think Brendan is… that’s the numbers he is on target for
And that’s with his injury break and playing for what some fans think is a brick side
People can say what they like and of course they will but that’s a player having a material impact on the game.

Honestly for me to be impressed by poor abilities but high number players they have to score at a ridiculous level. They have to be scoring so many that all of their defincies are covered by their contribution. With a striker their purpose is to score but if they contribute nothing outside of goals I need to be seeing a minimum of 20+ goals and not in bunches, they need to be spread out over a larger number of games.

The majority of the strikers you mentioned played in dual striker systems so often the work they didn't do was compensated by their partner but again for me to be impressed the numbers have to be very high to make up for their lack of contribution.

I would take a footballing striker of a poacher all day and every day.

I would worry about how little our defenders do defensively before complaining about our attackers.

So would I and pretty much any fan I'd have thought. But you need a poacher when others cannot hit a barn door from six inches. Someone to convert your superiority into points.

Okay, I cheerfully concede Johnson can exasperate at times but would argue part of the problem is he creates chances that others spurn. One speciality of his that seems to go under the radar is the intelligent low cross fired into the space between keeper and defence that - in the absence of someone like himself to get on the end of them - too often goes begging.

But overall, 22 goals and 15 assists in a total of 97 PL appearances for Forest and Spurs suggests he's actually a bit more than just a tap-in merchant.

The problem is the same with any player we buy. We don't want good or even very good. We want/need world class to take us to the next level.

They might not be wc when we buy them but they should have the potential.

I don’t get that as everyone knows scoring is the hardest thing in a low margin sport
He ain’t perfect but he will likely get 20 goals this season

Son scored 17 league goals last season but you made it very clear you weren’t impressed with him last season and blamed him for a number of goals that weren’t even his fault (Saudi Sportswashing Machine away). So you can’t really blame people for not being happy with Johnson’s overall play.

The one that other players don’t attack because weirdly they stay on the edge of the area … so basically the opposite of what he does and makes look easy

Some people on here don't seem to think getting into the right positions is something to be appreciated. It is actually a massive part of being successful in football and not all players have the desire/ability.

I hope you are applying that observation to our defence as well

The bar is set by the players standing
Sons our captain, talisman and highest paid player so is judged differently to another player
That’s why one gets paid a lot more and the expectation is he will do more
I defend Johnson because the bloke is jumped on constantly. I ding defend him because I’m a fan of his, just because I don’t get why he is clearly hated so much…
When he scored 2 goals last week… varsity a compliment was raised (look at this thread). When he doesn’t score … he is brick and does nothing
Treat people proportionally fairly. That’s all I expect
Sonny is a legend here… but as I’ve said before, his play has got worse, and he should be 5 guys up at least now
Brennan’s play has got better than it was
One is on his upwards trajectory and this may be his limit. The other is on the downward slope now.
Both could be blips or peaks
I didn’t bring son into the arguments again. Someone else mentioned his numbers. They are decent. 1 in 2… same as Brennan
Maybe the are both just brick… maybe that’s the answer
What I will add is if love to see others do what Johnson does. Target the back post for tap ins. It’s clearly easy and anyone can do it
