AVB

Except those defeats to Fulham and Liverpool towards the end of that season. I really do think we were riding our luck in a lot of those games, but we had Gareth Bale to get us out of trouble.

Did we really rely on Bale that much that season ? Bale may have been our outstanding player but he only scored 21 goals and assisted 4 goals. Remember we scored a total of 66 goals that season. I am sure other players would have stepped up in his place. We looked so compact and stable under AVB in 2013.

Are you serious? Bale's goals won us 25 points out of 72! That is more than a third of points down to one player and many of those were solo efforts where he picked up the ball ran at the opposing defence and scored. Those points meant we finished 5th with a record points total.

Like who? Ade was completely and utterly useless that season. Dempsey scored a handful of goals, ditto Siggy. Lennon rarely scores. I'm genuinely interested who you think would have stepped up. I'm sure Liverpool fans said the same thing before this season when they lost Suarez.

I am convinced Dempsey and Sigurdsson would have stepped up in Bale's place, especially Sigurdsson. Afterall, Sigurdsson is the player with the 2nd highest assists in the league this season. I think most of the players just relied on Bale to score instead of trying themselves.

bales goals were part of a match winning performance, he wasn't in nets making saves or at CB heading clear, he could have scored 3 times as many goals but if the rest of the team were not doing their job we wouldn't have won so many of those games

The truth is that despite the results, the football was almost un-watchable.

It's was much better than the majority of the dross that has been served up this year.

I wasn't a fan of AVBs style, but it got us results that year.

I'm confident that if AVB was our manager this year we would have got more points.

I can't recall (please feel free to correct me) such a poor run of consecutive games as 1 win in 6 we have seen this season.

I like MoPo but this is very true. I mean all those who moan and rage about AVB (even about his first year, when we went into the last game only a point away from 4th), did you prefer this season to that one?

I've enjoyed this season in parts but in no way does it compare to our effectiveness and competitiveness that AVB oversaw that first season on 2012/13. If you say that you could see how we would go once Bale wasn't there, then surely the same can be said for now with MoPo when Kane isn't playing?

i've always found that argument a bit odd, you could say it about anyone, Chelsea wouldn't have as many points without Hazard, City without Aguero, Barca without Messi

on Sunday either Sunderland, Saudi Sportswashing Machine or Hull are going to get relegated, and they will be able to point to one of the two other clubs and say, if that one guy didn't get that one goal in that one game we would have stayed up and they would have gone down

Bit like when people say Sherwood wouldn't have gotten as many points without Adebayor isn't it? That's odd too isn't it?

Sorry to mention Sherwood again. Just couldn't resist.

What specifically did you enjoy? Only having 3 shots per game? Winning with dodgy penalties?
Mostly I enjoy Spurs being better than the other team. I like watching Spurs have the ball rather than chasing the opposition around when they have it. I also enjoy our manager out-thinking his opposite number.

His first season, I did not enjoy the style of play, but the results were about par ( I believe we should have finished 4th, but 5th was still a good season regardless). We would frequently have 65% possession, have only 3-4 shots per game, then lose 1-0 or 5-0. Possession just for possession's sake is pointless, you have to be able to break teams down. The main tactic seemed to be dominate the ball, then spend 85 minutes creating nothing then give the ball to Bale to cover up for our deficiencies in this area. Even Barcelona have evolved the way they play under Luis Enrique using crosses and being more direct than they are perhaps comfortable with. Keeping the ball is great, it keeps the opposition from having it, but you have to be able to come up with ways to score.

I'd be keen to her your thoughts on the way he out thought big fat Sam, Pellegrini and Rodgers during our heavy defeats in his second season.

I know most people are not keen on the way that Chelsea play. In an ideal world, I would like us to win with style, but I would take winning, even if it is a little bit ugly. If AVB had gotten better results than he did, then great, I would have supported him fully. But we weren't even doing that towards the end, we were playing dire, uninspired, clueless attacking football. I can accept winning whilst playing a boring brand of football, but I can't accept boring football AND getting hammerings like we did in his final few months as manager, the good defensive displays from the previous season had almost evaporated completely. It still amazes me how patient some fans were with him given how he failed at Chelsea and how quickly the same fans jumped on other manager's backs who got similar results.

I enjoyed that season more than this one.

I do however think we are better going forward than we were under AVB, we seem to have more ideas, still a big work in progress, but I believe we do look better attacking.

The style of play is still not great though.
