'better backup'

Mean someone with more potential?

Like Fryers?

(not saying he'll be great, but that does appear to be the purpose of that exercise)

Sorry, forgot about him, do not know much about him. But he feels a bit untested, would like to have someone who feels like a bit on the same level as BAE.

I know he's untested, but surely the point of that is to buy him now and 'test' him in the games where we rest Bae? (League cup, fa cup, europa cup if we face some smaller sides..)

Is the perfect time to buy him, seeing as Bae still has a few seasons left. The risk i guess is if bae gets injured and fryers ends up playing the more difficult games, but Vert can also provide some cover at LB.

I don't know much about him either, what i'm hoping is that the scouting team and whoever made the decision do.. [-o<

Least important?

It's a team game, fudge that. If your full backs are brick then they will be your weakness. Just like if any other position is brick.
Do you know what least important means? it means out of all the positions it's the ...least important. I'm not saying it's not important i'm saying it's the least important.

Did you not get that i was insinuating that all of the positions are important?

It's like building a car. If one of the pieces is shot it's not going to work properly.

So are you saying your opinion is that all positions are as important as eachother?

Bale, Vertonghen and Naughton can all play left back. Enough cover already. If we sign that young United player we'll be sorted.

Then down the line if the United kid gets really good we'll be ok, if not we'll have to look into signing a new left back. Pretty much sorted for the next 3-4 years either way unless someone clearly better that BAE become available at a reasonable price.

If you have a weak link, teams will work it out and punish you for it.

Jeez can you simply answer the question directly. Do you think all the positions on the pitch are equally important? meaning you don't feel certain positions are not as important as others.

My idea with Olsson was also that he can cover for Bale, he is quick and dares to challenge. Like when you have players who can step in and offer similar atribut, we have had problems with Lennon and Bale are the only real wide players we have. If you look at those who A`rry would use !

Don't think he's good enough to be relied on as a midfield option. I think Hoilett would be a better squad option there, although not as exciting as someone like Oscar that we have been linked with or Affelay that we for some reason so far haven't been linked to.

I think we will see a different approach to squad options/backups under AVB with more rotations and changes. Someone that can cover multiple attacking positions would be good rather than a pure left wing replacement.

All just my opinion of course.

One of the things we were feared for under Harry - especially last season - was our ability to hit teams on the break with lightning speed from Bale, Lennon, Ade and Defoe.

Will this pressing game that AVB seems to prefer have an impace on that? I mean does pressing higher up the picth limit the space for our pacier attacking players to run into and get in behind defences?

<<Apologies if already discussed in this thread...haven't read it all..>>

High pressing will generally allow teams to win the ball in better counter attacking positions leading to more good counter attacking chances. Defending deeply means that there's a long way to get to the goal from where you win the ball and since pressure is rarely put on the opponents furthest back and thus rarely won from those players there will normally be players to defend against the counter attacks.

You mean someone like Pienaar? :)

First XI:

---------- Lloris
Walker Kaboul Vertonghen BAE
------- Sandro Moutric
---- VDV Sigurdsson Bale
-----------Ade

But just as interesting, second XI:

------------- Friedel
Naughton Dawson Caulker Fryers
------ Parker Hudd Livermore
------ Lennon Defoe Gio

ive been thinking this too....a possibility id say

Except for the fact he can't cross, can't beat his opponent from a standing start, and hardly looks to pass.

He must be one of those who are bricking it under AVB - very little versatillity as a player
