AVB & Spurs Tactics and Formations discussion thread

People are just speculating based on what AVB seemed to like at Porto and at Chelsea. Bale has done well from the right in a 4-3-3 for Wales.

I don't think inverted wingers are a fad, works quite well for Ronaldo and worked well for several years for Messi until they moved him more centrally.

So he will magically start being effective crossing with his right foot or cutting in from the right?

His job as a winger in a 4-4-2 is to get to the byline and cross. He has to be a provider rather than be the outlet. He either has to do that, or he has to roam inside, and try and thread passes ala Modric, which just wasn't his strength at all. Easily nullified by opposition sitting deep, narrow and showing him onto his weaker foot.

His job on the right of a 4-3-3 isn't going to be to get to the byline and cross. It's going to be to cut in and score, or maybe skin his man while coming inside and lay it off to someone in a better position. But he isn't going to be asked to get to the byline and cross much. He will be higher up the pitch, and outlet rather than a provider, and it will be totally different from how Harry used him.

Whole discussion I had with AS about this exact thing on the previous page. I don't think the 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 got the best out of Bale at all when he was anywhere other than the left, and when he was on the left he was double teamed out of the match. His strengths don't lie in being a provider with passes from deep, his strengths lie high up the pitch, near the goal and scaring the brick out of defenders. That's a lot harder to nullify Bale there. And if they do try to narrow up, we will have Walker on the overlap. If they get tight to him, there's space inside for Sig, Lennon, Ade, Modric, whoever. The key is he starts a lot higher up in the proposed 4-3-3 system than he does in the 4-4-2, where he was a provider for Rafa and Ade rather than being the outlet himself.

IMO your point collapsed at the beginning of the post. Last year our wide men roamed, and certainly didn't stay wide all the time.

I tried to do it right but everyting always automatically aligns to the right on this particular PC so I gave up

You can't post blank spaces for some reason

Even IF Coentrao was available, the price tag would be way out of our reach or interest.
