AVB & Spurs Tactics and Formations discussion thread

Any thoughts on the NYRB goal last night, shows the frailties in the high line as Jan was caught and conceded the peno. Interesting it was Cahill who exploited it!

Hmm, to me it wasn't so much a symptom of the high line, because they weren't too high up, it's just that Vertonghen didn't react quick enough. They need to be sure of what to do if it's a midfield runner attacking their zone rather than a striker, and have the confidence to track him knowing that the striker they would usually be marking will be covered. I'm sure it will be fine.

Seen others comment Walker was the one playing him onside.

Its a work in progress I suppose, not sure how much to read into it to be honest. That said our pressing was supposed to be much improved making the highline a very effective tool in pinning a team back and dominating them.

It was definitely a high line for me, not looked at walers position. Agreed we pinned and dominated, hence why you need quick centre halfs to get you out of trouble! As much as I like Dawson, he isnt quick enough to play this tactic, I would have liked to seen the right hand centre half coming across to help JV.

Im interested in Bale's Role and him having this number 9 on his back......

It was a much improved performance overall, especially second half. Our pressing was excellent. It was like it clicked for the team and they just 'got it'. Not saying we are going to do that to the best of teams and I know it was only the New York Red Bulls, but it was good to see improvement from the first game on the tour to this.

I've just looked at their goal again. Seems like Livermore got dragged out of position as well. We tried to press high, their player dummied the ball and all of a sudden they had acres of space. Cahill had a gap the size of Belgium to run into and wasn't tracked by any of our midfielders, and the defenders didn't adjust. So it started off with them having too much space - one simple dummy shouldn't be enough to give them a massive opening, not from a simple pass from the wing to the middle - continued with our defensive midfielder getting dragged out of position, and ended with our centre back not reacting and getting caught behind.

A lack of concentration all round rather than a problem with the high line IMO. I'm not sure Livermore should have been that high up. Sig came back to press the guy who dummied, so Livermore basically vacated his zone for no reason when he could have been tracking Cahill. But then if the players are being drilled to press, press, press you can see where misunderstandings may come. I'm sure it will be worked out for the season though, because the gap wasn't entirely Livermore's fault. I think Bentley could have been tighter considering the ball was the other side of the pitch to him.

Personel doesnt matter but its good to look at the tactics being employed dont you think? I do worry about our central midfield at the moment as Sandro, Parker and Modric having no preseason as such. Hudd and Sig will be ok but missing the important deep player for me

I think the "bones" of how things will be are beginning to show, which is of course interesting - I just dont think you can really judge how effective it is without seeing it in proper competition and more importantly with a full compliment.

How different might it have been last night with Sandro, Moutinho and Adebayor playing instead of Bentley, Livermore and Jenas?

Freidel - keeper (instructed to throw/pass short to Vertonghen or the full-backs if possible)
Vertonghen - ball playing centreback (comes short to receive the ball off the keeper, knocks it short into midfield or spreads play out to the full-backs or carries forward himself if space opens up infront of him)
Kaboul/Dawson (stoppers - destroy everything and knock if short to vertonghen or deeper midfielders)
Walker/BAE/Naughton (both fullbacks come short to receive when keeper has the ball but start pushing forward if Vertonghen or Hudd gets the ball)
Hudd - "quarterback"/deep playmaker (comes short to receive off the keeper potentially or make options for Vertonghen or full-backs to pass short to pass short to. If Vertonghen or the full backs push forward can play-one-two off them or switch play out to the wingers in the front 3 if its on.
Parker/Sandro - midfield destroyers (job is to win the ball back, keep the pressing game going out of possession and knock the ball short once one to a ball-player to keep the play ticking over
VDV/Sigurdsson - attacking midfielder (involve themselves in build-up play, play short passes and choose the moment to get into the box. play one-twos off the striker and lay it off to them or receive cut-backs from the 2 wide players. Help in midfield pressing game when don't have the ball (Sigurdsson more ideal for this part of the job probably)
Bale/Lennon - wide-men (but as part of a front 3 they should play closer to the striker in this position and combine with the full-backs to play one-twos. Cut-backs along the ground into the box should be the order of the day rather than the traditional cross. They can both play this way, we saw infact one of my favourite goals from last season against QPR at home when Bale played a 1-2 with Lennon before ripping the net off. Its all about instructions and training.
Defoe - scorer (plain and simple - your job is to get on the end of cut-backs and one-twos and just fire it at the goal. End of.

On a tactics board this team may look like this:

...........................................Freidel
..................................................Vertonghen
............................Kaboul
Walker......................................................................BAE
..................................Thudd
........................................Parker/Sandro
...................Sig/VDV
.............Lennon...............................Bale
................................Defoe

So I honestly think with the right application that team could work brilliantly and therefore its understandable that AVB doesn't necessarily see a mad panic for reinforcements - he needs to decide exactly how he would like to play with the players available first of all.

If that's what we're going with for the Saudi Sportswashing Machine game then i'll be very dissapointed to say the least.

why? its only 2 weeks and who else is there to go in there? Or do you mean you are hoping for some signings between now and then? Lets face it, AVB has probably been promised funds before he signed but Levy was pulling his usual brick and going against his word. cant change a tight man.

Or maybe signing good players is more difficult than most fans appreciate

Gotta agree with this, we need at least 2 strikers this summer and it is imperative we get one before the Saudi Sportswashing Machine game. Preferably Adebayor. Defoe simply won't do.

Hudd is a great option to have at CM, but I think we need another CM too. Moutinho would be the ideal signing, we have no quality players that can play box-to-box like him. He could tie together our midfield three, allowing us to play 2 of Sig, VDV, Huddlestone, Sandro and Parker depending on the situation. If we want to dominate games, we need industry and sharp, quick passing from back to front, at the moment I think we lack a player who exhibits both of these features.

Huddlestone can replace Modric as our first-choice deep-lying playmaker, and we can diversify our squad a bit by adding a different type of midfielder in Moutinho (well, if we can get him that is).

Ideally we would get a more mobile keeper and some competition for Lennon as well.

No Luka, No Ade. That's our game runner and game winner gone for a start.
