AVB & Spurs Tactics and Formations discussion thread

If he's a 4-3-3 man... and has now signed Ade permanently, then unless/assuming he gets at least ONE more striker, we COULD be looking at a 'front 3' of Ade-Defoe-VdV just off...
ASSUMING Modric is off too, then either his replacement or Thudd? would either join Parker and either Lennon or Bale in midfield...
with a normal back 4...

UNLESS AVB sees BALE as the 'auxiliary' striker alongside Ade/VdV with a more 'Sandro/Parkery feel to the midfield...
aw I dunno, I'm just writing players names and hoping some of them stick! Besides, that's why AVB is paid to make such decisions... I just PAY to watch those decisions being made!

AS it stands... with the players at the club (not including Modric, to save the heartache further down the line)
My preferred 4-3-3 with the players we've got would be;

--------------------- FREIDEL --------------------
--- WALKER -- VERTONGHEN -- KABOUL -- BAE ---
--- LENNON ---- PARKER/SANDRO ------- BALE------
------------------ VAN DER VAART ----------------
---------------- ADE --------- DEFOE ------------

feels a bit more attacking, and may well compensate that in all likelihood we won't have Modric, so at least changing the system to 4-3-3 covers the fact there would've been be a gaping hole in a 4-4-1-1 style midfield!

So basically that's a 4-4-2 with VDV pushed further forward leaving a massive great big hole behind him. That team would be ripped apart.

Yup! But AVB has got a dossier... so i trust him!

Personally, I think Defoe will be sacrificed for a(n)other striker to be brought in... whether ONE of Lennon/VdV makes way for a slightly more solid looking midfield 2 out of Parker/Sandro/Thudd remains to be seen... but yes, I see where you're coming from!

I predict we'll play 4-3-3 with two inside forwards alongside a lone striker through the centre.

The problem I have with this is that I am not entirely comfortable with how many of our players are suited to a 4-3-3.

I don't believe Bale and Lennon are suited to the wide attacking positions in that formation for example (although Bale may be of use playing wide right I still don't think he'll be as effective as playing as a conventional left winger but I hope to be proved wrong). So I wouldn't be at all shocked to see Bale moved to left back and Lennon dropped all together. I think VDV will be another casualty as I don't believe he can play central midfield, and am not sure if he is fast/agile enough to play right inside forward.

The ideal midfield three is a defensive disciplined holder, a midfield battler and a goal scoring midfielder who is more box to box. I suppose we could try and have a bit more guile and remove the battler for a Modric style (hopefully Modric!) player. Bit of a risk in the Premiership but it could work if the quality of player was right. Sigurdsson has clearly been purchased to play the goal scoring midfielder and we have Sandro/Parker who can fulfill the roles of holder (Parker) and battler (Sandro). Although I believe Parker's days are numbered under AVB anyway. I think Huddlestone is another who is probably on his way out as I can't see how he fits in with AVBs style of play. Jenas on the other hand may well find himself back as an important first team squad member.

We probably need to sign a couple of inside forwards before the season starts, and if we do that we may be in pretty decent shape....if we're also signing Ade. It's certainly going to be a revolution not evolution it would appear.

doesnt barca play mostly closer to 4-5-1 with the wingers/winged strikers starting deeper from midfield, and messi upfront? its only when in attack going for goal do start to resemble 4-3-3. Its 5 midfielders that crowd out the space.

VdV in advanced role on the right cutting in on his left foot with remit to support Ade. Walker provides width on the right. Bale on the left. Sig behind the front three taking pot shots from distance and timing his runs into the box. Moutinho/Modric and Sandro in the middle of the park, pulling the strings and retaining possession. BAE, Verts, Kaboul and Friedel complete the team.

--- Bale -- Ade
------------------VDV
-------- Sigurdsson
--- Moutinho --- Sandro
BAE Vertonghen Kaboul Walker
----------- Friedel

Sandro protecting the gaps left by Walker and VDV. Moutinho roaming behind Bale. Sigurdsson on the edge of the box.

Bale got quite a few goals last season playing on the left in what was pretty much a 4-4-1-1, in a more advanced position on the left I see no reason why he wouldn't score as much or more.

Will be interesting to see what Lennon can do under AVB.

Again, I believe people are readin too much into this 4-3-3 AVB brick ...

If AVB's first move is to move Bale to LB and drop Lennon and VDV, we are in troube, because those 3 are consistantly in our best 5 players for the last number of years. I have no issue with moving someone like JD on (who hasn't been able to hold a starting position down under 3 managers), but to shift the very players that make us the top 4 side we are for a system, really can't see it, or Levy buying into that philosophy.

I fully expect Lennon/Bale/VDV/Kaboul/Walker to be a significant part of our 1st team lineup this season

--- Bale -- Ade
------------------VDV
-------- Sigurdsson
--- Moutinho --- Sandro
BAE Vertonghen Kaboul Walker
----------- Friedel

Sandro protecting the gaps left by Walker and VDV. Moutinho roaming behind Bale. Sigurdsson on the edge of the box.

I figure your formation could switch to Bale at LB while BAE is at the ACN. Switch sigurdsson to the left wing role, since we know he can cut inside and shoot effectively. VDV at the top of midfield trio and Lennon/GDS/Falque on the right wing.

Most of the team is clear to me, just we'll have Sig/VDV/Lennon and possibly someone else fighting for two places. Friedel(Or Lloris), Walker, Kaboul, Vertonghen, Ekotto, Sandro, Moutinho, Bale and Ade all look locked in to me.

I would like to see that line up at Saudi Sportswashing Machine if we sign the players we are linked to.

Nice it have the sense there are options

VDV - Adebayor - bale

Lennon - Defoe - Dos Santos

Midfield

Sandro - Moutinho/Modric
.......Sigurdson

Huddlestone...Parker
.........Vdv?

...........Bale/new signing?/Lennon...............Adebayor/new signing?............VDV/new signing?/Lennon

..............................................................Sigurdsson/VDV/Jenas

.........................new signing?/Huddlestone/Carroll

......................................................................................Parker/Sandro/Livermore

BAE/Naughton/Vertonghen.......Vertonghen/Caulker....Kaboul/Dawson..........Walker/Naughton/Kaboul

..................................................Freidel/new signing?/Cudicini

There's a lot of interchangable options there if we pull off a couple of deals in the pipe-line that depending on who plays in which position could make what is the same formation operate very differently (e.g. put Lennon on the left of the front 3 cutting in and shooting or Bale on the left going on the outside and putting crosses into the box).

Some ITK for you all:

A friend of mine is a strength and conditioning coach at a top rugby club and so knows people in the industry. Someone he knows had got a job as an intern at Spurs but it was cancelled when AVB took over, apparently he doesn't take much interest in Sports Science. Interesting, since Mourinho is well known to place a lot of emphasis on it.
