AVB & Spurs Tactics and Formations discussion thread

I would like to see that line up at Saudi Sportswashing Machine if we sign the players we are linked to.

You accidentally left Sigurddson out mate.

Some ITK for you all:

A friend of mine is a strength and conditioning coach at a top rugby club and so knows people in the industry. Someone he knows had got a job as an intern at Spurs but it was cancelled when AVB took over, apparently he doesn't take much interest in Sports Science. Interesting, since Mourinho is well known to place a lot of emphasis on it.

Baffling really. With the new training centre you would think he utilize sports scientists to ensure optimal fitness levels for our players. Look at MilanLab most of that team owe their longevity to the sports scientists who work in that lab.

With our new state of the art training center I would expect there to be someone working on this.

The more i think about it the more i really want AVB to tweak his formation so BALE plays the Hulk role on the left hand side. He has pace, strength, heading ability, movement, finishing, everything to play that role just as effective as Hulk does.

that's his point - get Bale to play the Hulk role on the left and whoever plays on the right can play the other role

But it's not the same role is it? The point of Hulk playing on the right is so he can be a selfish bastard and cut inside to shoot, you don't get the same from playing on your natural side. Same goes for the likes of Ronaldo, Robben, Villa etc.

Wait i don't get it. So you can only be a "selfish bastard" if you cut inside? if you play in your natural position you can't be a "selfish bastard"?

He's saying Hulk is left footed, he plays on the right and cuts in and scores with his left foot.
Bale can't play the Hulk role on the left, as Bale too is left footed. Bale is not gonna cut in and score with his right foot.

The idea of playing on your unnatural side is that you cut inside onto your stronger foot, if you're playing on your natural side then you're always going away from goal, limiting your chances to shoot. I see no relevance to Hulk if you're playing Bale on the left, the player/role I'd liken it to is Walcott(albeit on opposite sides). Why do you think Hulk, Robben, Ronaldo, Villa etc play on their weaker flank? If they play on their natural side then they don't score half as many goals, it's far easier to cut inside opponents as you're going towards goal and leaving yourself face on to shoot, whereas you go down the outside on your natural side and you're cutting your angles down.

Having said all of that I don't want to see Bale on the right as he's not agile enough to be that effective, he's built for straight line speed. I think Azza's more suited to it.

Bale can go in the inside and outside. He's done it before countless times and can easily do it again.

I'm not sure this is entirely true at all tbh. Do you have any stats to back this claim?

Yes he can go outside but what angle is he left with? As for coming inside, well I can only recall him doing that successfully once in the past two years which was at home to Chelsea.

I don't need to provide stats to back it up, even if I wanted to I have no idea how I'd be able to find them. All I'll say is why have those players by and large played most of their career on their unnatural sides? The same can be said for Messi before he moved up front. It's basic geometry.

I'm actually starting to think AVB is going to be a bit flexible in terms of the formations he plays this year. I've been posting around that I think Rafa is definitely gone but his quote from one of the interviews yesterday 'I'm counting on Rafa' suggests he probably could well stay here. I guess it could be to ensure we get a good price if he does go, and could also be because he doesn't want to be seen to be ousting a popular and talented member of the squad when trying to come across well to his new squad.

But I can imagine the club wouldn't mind keeping him, and if so, I feel we will play the same system in terms of pressing and possession, but we could play a number of different formations. With Rafa, a 4-2-3-1 which pretty much picks itself, or the 4-3-3 which will make use of Sig and then needs an inside forward to work effectively.

Did he say that? Excellent. VDV is too good to sell in my opinion. We would not buy anyone as good with the money we would make from the sale.

He actually said "at the moment I'm counting on rafa"

That's close enough.

I read the whole interview and he was the only player he called out. To me that sounds like he realises how much VDV is worth to the team and he has/will put his faith in him. That's my take on it anyway.

I actually think losing Rafa would be more devestating than losing Modric.....i'm glad that it seems he's staying [-o<
