Antonio Conte - officially NOT the coach of THFC

we all know Dier is not very fast or agile, its a compromise, we are short on options.

If Dier as DM and a back line of Davies, Lenglet, Romero, Royal and Porro, I think we can defend better than we did vs Leicester.

Wow. I know from what I’ve seen that Conte is limited on the actual football/tactical front but today’s comments on Dier as a midfield option (whether you think he is or isn’t) are extremely worrying.

This after selecting Tanganga over Emerson at RCB Saturday when it’s arguably the position he’s best suited to and had just come off a stormer the week before.

An alternative explanation would be that Conte just doesn't consider Dier to be a midfield option at all. Kind of like asking if he's considered Sanchez as an option there. But takes sint goodwill interpretation of what Conte actually said. Clumsy wording from him at best.

I'm not convinced RCB is a good role for Royal. Perhaps could grow into a role like that, but not straight away.

It would be awful
Gives the wrong message out to young players too
If we played with 4 at the back (say - Royal, Romero, Lenglet, Davies) and then Dier in front of them as a deep, defensive midfielder then I wouldn't mind too much.... Not that I think Dier is a great defensive midfield player, it's just that with our lack of numbers available in midfield I don't think there are too many other options.

If he persists with a back 3 and then has Dier as one of the two in midfield in front of them then I would despair.

I’d play Sarr and Skipp every day of the week over Dier in midfield
He now has no characteristics of a midfielder
Even if we went to 4 at the back (which conte will never do with us) I’d still not conte plate him in midfield

that’s the thing that I don’t get, there seems to be a whole lot of people that are convinced that Royal will make a good RCB when to my knowledge he has:
1) never played there
2) isn’t good in the air
3) has lapses of concentration defensively

I think he could become a good player in that role, he has quite a few of the defensive attributes needed for that role.

There are some similarities between that role and a traditional RB role. I think he could adjust well to it if given time.

It's also a rather different role though. For most players that will take time. Time he's unlikely to get as long as Romero is fit and available.

Impossible to know if he could/would adjust quickly without seeing him play there. But I don't understand how people can fault Conte for not playing him there. We simply don't know how he would do, but Conte probably has a better idea of that than any of us.

Yeh not for me either and that's not a downer on him but similar to when people claimed Kulu would be a great RWB, I just don't see it

Romero as ccb, Emerson rcb, porro rwb and kulu as rwf.
Romero and Emerson already have a decent understanding, Emerson can cover romero when he goes marauding after the ball. He also is comfortable moving out to cover porro. Has a decent rapport with kulu. Intergrate porro and i think that makes that side very strong.

It’s fans playing fantasy football
I’d argue that Dier having played CL, international football and around 400 club games would be better than them… but he ain’t
All the CBS need to be able to pass much better than we currently see

The Extra Inch Podcast did an interview with Nima Tavallaey, an Italian football expert and Conte watcher. Towards the end they talk all things Conte and he basically says that he is a mad genius, who if given the players he wants, can take us to the promised land. His modus operandi is hugely well known, so his histrionics, inflexibility, and odd moods should not come as a shock to anyone with passing knowledge of him. Like many on here, Nima says that players like Tanganga, Dier and Lenglet infuriate him (he says Conte was howlingly furious when given Lenglet for this season).

I would love to know what Conte’s vision is for us in attack, and what we work on in training. Just looks like playing the same players over and over again, with little to no inventive movement or interplay, expecting things to suddenly change. I just don’t get it.

5 minutes from the end today, Danjuma got the ball near half way and rifled a straight pass along the floor into Kane's feet, rather than playing a safe short pass to someone else, or hoisting a cross 30 yards over Kane's head. I would have fallen off the sofa if Sir Isaac Newton hadn't invented gravity.
It was so noticeable that we don't usually play that kind of ball.
