This has become quite the myth. That's keeps being repeated despite it being factually wrong. He played every game for Nuno apart from the final defeat to United. He also played every single game under Mason other than the Emirates Marketing Project match. So the only coach who hasn't played Reggy is actually Conte and that was for obvious reasons. He's not a WB.

Spence could have played earlier, even if just to give some resting time to Porro. It seems very clear to me that he only got the minutes in the end due to injuries, Ange's own recent words corroborate that.
And left spence out of europa while not playing him in the league until there was no option.

That spence came on and got better with each game and now looks like one of the better players reflects poorly on ange's assessment of young players.

He's always been like that. Win 4-3 and he acts like it's the best game he's ever seen, reverse the score and he becomes a grumpy clam.
Ah yes. I miss the good old days when we had the likes of Conte or Mourinho after a defeat. Managers do tend to be such a chirpy, upbeat lot when interviewed after a game they've lost - Ange really bucks the trend there  ....

i loved those mourinho and conte interviews, adds to the entertainment of football.
and in retrospect, they were right to complain about the quality of the team then

Watching our abysmal defending today just reinforces my view. We might have won a few more games with fewer injuries/more players available, but our tactics are utter brick. Ange out.
Thought we were too vulnerable defensively, even accepting that we play attacking front foot football and will be more vulnerable defensively than under a more defense minded coach.

Not sure that's just the system though. Still both or first choice centre backs out. VdV just stops quite a few of those chances before they even become chances.

When we were good earlier this season we were still vulnerable defensively, but imo not to the same extent. Then, to me at least, we were more in the acceptable given the approach territory.

It's only really by the comparison of what's been going on with injuries for the last couple of months that our current injury situation looks even decent.

3 obvious and important starters missing in Romero, VdV and Solanke. Johnson who did start most games only ready for a sub appearance. Maddison only ready for about an hour. Then add Dragusin. Odobert only ready for a cameo. Udogie not even given a sub appearance.

In normal circumstances that's a rather significant injury problem, not quite a "crisis" perhaps (and for once less than our opposition), but still. Take out your two starting CBs and starting striker from any team and it's going to cause significant problems.

With that context a rather decent performance.

The key questions for me remain:
-Are the injuries to a significant degree because of Ange and his system/methods?
-Can that be mitigated fixed?
-Can Ange get consistency out of this team when he has only "normal" injury problems to deal with?

Ange Postecoglou on Heung-Min Son...

"I've said a million times; we are in a world now where people are constantly wanting someone to blame. That is the world we live in.
"The reason for our poor results and consistency is not because of Sonny or my tactics.
"It is just that we have had 11 injuries for the last two months that means we have had tired players, but that doesn't suffice.
"That doesn't provide a head on a plate. That's how we live our lives these days. If someone makes a mistake, they want to tear them down. There is no leniency anymore, understanding or contextualising of why this happened.
"They are looking for someone. If people think Sonny hasn't done everything in his power to help us through this. So, what if he is a nice guy? What is wrong with being a nice person?
"Sonny is Sonny. I have no complaints about his leadership, he's handled it his way.
"If you're looking for someone to blame, you're looking at the guy most culpable."

Deal - now you don't have eleven players out I'll expect results to be at an acceptable level. If not, I'll look at your tactics.

And no Richarlson, so no recognized number 9 available.

It's quite intriguing finding this new normal after the astronomical investment in the squad over the last 2-3 years. Even with a few missing and another few not at match fitness, our 20 man match day squad looked really good. Night and day from just one week ago. It's probably not even fair to compare what we have today with any of our recent managers. None of them had anywhere near the resources that we've given Ange.

For me, there was only one player out there that wouldn't ideally be in a starting eleven and that was Davies. He did OK, but still had those moments where he came up very short. It's even tougher for him when he's expected to play offside on the halfway line as well knowing he has no pace to get back if it doesn't work.

I hope we're not in a position where we have 6 centre half choices and 4 of them are out even if it's very short term. Fingers crossed on Danso.

For me, we're not quite back at the point where Ange can be judged on how this thing looks with a full(ish) compliment of players.

Next step is to close that 7 point gap and get ourselves back in the next cluster of teams.

Agreed. Genuinely think this is the strongest squad we've had since... Can't even remember. Tel, Danso and Kinsky just adding to the strength Solanke, Gray and Bergvall have given us. Personally I think Odobert will be another one, we've just had to wait because of his injuries.

The difference from last season is massive. Just that our injury problems have also been massive. And whatever the causes are for that need to be identified within the club.

Agreed that he can't quite be judged on on a fullish/normal situation quite yet. Definitely things left to prove. But at least we got the improvement in performance that was imo expected given a week off and some players returning.

Squad is strong, we are missing that Kane, Son (prime version), Bale, VDV, the real game changer in first 11. A few in squad could become that, but likely still a couple of years off. We need to look at that kind of addition in summer.

Re Ange, I'm not sure anything has changed, can this system ever be consistent enough to push the club on?

The one player who you know will just turn up
Like Cunha has done for wolves or you Saka or palmer

When your players missing cost more than the whole squad you can name you now it’s all a bit nuts

Fingers crossed for the defenders ....I have a feeling he's priming them perfectly for an all out assault on the EL.
