American politics

You say "people will die as a result of this"... and it is about withdrawing funding for abortion. Was that a pun or a poor choice of words, I don't know what you mean

Making abortion harder does not stop abortion, it stops safe abortion. The result of this will be thousands of women will die having back street abortions or because of complications during labour.

This is a dark path
Gettin' scary, isn't it. Back to the dark ages.

I suspect the Trump presidency could be the final nail in the coffin of USA as the major global superpower (one could claim China is already ahead). What's worrying is having a desperate narcissist in charge when/if this happens. Especially one who doesn't seem to shy away from anything to get it his way.

RE. Trump and the abortion gag rule, that's a Republican thing, not a Trump thing. Reagan did it, Clinton sorted it, Bush brought it back, Obama sorted it again.

its amazing how quickly a republican can undo something that doesn't involve guns

There's a programme on BBC1 right now about a US summer camp training (indoctrinating) teenagers (and younger) to be Anti-abortion activists.
One of the 'teachers' likens the impact of abortions in the US to the Holocaust.

All quite disturbing. But it is a very strong movement in the US, scarily so.

I don't think stuff like that is much better than the fake news from the Trump side. For example, in that thread where she talks about Trump saying cutting regulations so that companies can do something monstrous. That's not quite what happened. The video is on youtube and you can watch for yourself, but he is talking about Ford wanting to build a massive plant and getting permission quickly, or Dell wanting to do something monstrous -- the context is clearly about the size of the plant/factory, as in a monstrously big factory. That's not how the lady in the Twitter feed is portraying it.

There are plenty of legitimate things to attack Trump for, without taking quotes out of context to fit some mental illness narrative.

That particular video is here:

I only watched it the other day, so when I read the Twitter thread, I knew that particular aspect wasn't right.

Ultimately it's down to him, he is president afterall. But I think that's him just throwing a bone to the other wingnuts in his party, giving St. Reagan a nod.

Ha Ronald Raygun who could ever forget that great leader. Lets be honest America has history of choosing nutty presidents and have even impeached one and then pardoned him later on.

America is a great country ( i have been lucky to have lived and worked there) with some really great people and i have made/have many friends there, but their politics stink and that is both the major partys.

I've got a lot of sympathy with Obama there. The current abortion legislation (as decided by the Supreme Court, in Planned Parenthood vs someone) leaves a lot of room for interpretation.

The decision is that, until viability (as sensible a marker as we're likely to get), the state may not "unduly burden" a woman in the process of getting an abortion. So under Obama, pretty much all states (with some redneck exceptions) stayed entirely clear of burdening women at all, and plenty used the available state funding to help those who needed it.

That loose interpretation though, works both ways. The Republicans are able to push "not unduly burden" to its limits in the other direction - waiting periods, education, required burial/cremation ceremonies, etc. There's very little any president can do (short of altering the make up of the SC) to actually change those limits to state intervention.

It's a good system and, in my view, a sound decision by the SC. The problem is that with Trump about to nominate at least one SCJ (probably two soon), everyone is too scared to bring a case, as they could restrict the wording and make it worse.
