2022 World Cup... gonna ruin the European Season

"Internal politicking" for Iranians could get them 'disappeared'/killed. And it's not about a fringe issue like LGB stuff, but women's rights. Half the population.
They refused to sing their own national anthem when the eyes of the world were upon them. That's ballsy.

So in your view women’s rights to wear what they like in Iran should be more important to an English footballer than lgbtq+ rights in qatar. Despite the complexities in expressing such a sentiment, they are labelled cretins all to a background of barely restrained hatred of England and the English.

Do you think I as an Englishman should stand idly by and listen to such confused drivel.

Why are these posters not slagging off other nations-not Senegal, not Wales, not even Qatar. It’s just odd.

I would just like to say that as the originator of the post i very specifically said armband nations, plural, and was not referencing England alone.

Just before England kicked off.

Or to put another way, I am sure I can predict when the next round of poison will be administered, almost to the hour.

Wow, just wow

The reason England are mentioned highly is because, in most, this forum has a high portion of English posters and if any are like myself, they look to their own nation to hopefully lead the way with what is a a huge human issue. But that aside we can still applaud other nations for taking a stand for other issues that are important to them, why it would provoke such an angry reaction from yourself I have no idea.

Suppression of women in Iran probably should be of more importance to an Iranian footballer than minority treatment in Qatar.
Not sure about English footballers. Are you thinking that we were saying that the English footballers should have been protesting about the Iranian internal situation? Because I don't think we were.
I was commenting on how we saw the Iranian footballers pre-match taking action about something that was important to them, as opposed to 'the armband nations' whose principles seem to have been taken from Groucho Marx and folded like a wet paper bag when threatened by...a yellow card.

If any if that is aimed at me, in 100% English. I just believe in ethics and morality and think we have the power to show global leadership on this issue. Kane could have been a Jesse Owen or Sebastian Vettle today, but he bottled it.

Cowering to despots and their agents is just like the england side in the 30s doing the nazi salute again

And seeing as we are of the same view, I will add, that people keep mentioning about it not being the players fault and it shouldn't be on th3 players to set, but I think that's a cop out because oppression of homosexuality is a human issue and we all have that in common, regardless of these being a World Cup or not the likes of Kane and Southgate shouldn't feel pressured into saying something, as human beings, they should want to. This world Cup being in Qatar should by human nature alone make people feel uncomfortable and act for their fellow man. Its likely everyone participating has a gay friend, relative or colleague, they should as humans show solidarity for them and the daily struggle they have.

If we are looking to footballers to sort out the worlds social injustice we are in a bad place.

Like I've said, it shouldn't be a case of looking at them to, its a fact that they should want to make a stand as human beings regardless. Oppression affects them as much as anyone, in fact the pressure not to come out as gay footballers probably means it affects them and their colleagues even more.

This isn't a case of wanting them to sort the issue it's looking to them as fellow men and women and expecting them to have the balls to say and do things we should all do when faced with the same things in life.

Absolutely. It's a binary thing - its oppression versus freedom, good versus bad. There is no neutrality or nuance.

Everyone should do as much about civil rights as their opportunities in life allow them. We might only say be able to join the Allies list at work, because that's all the power we have to do good. But footballers' profile gives them the opportunity to wear a little bit of cloth that would empower millions of oppressed people. To not do that is an active and a cowardly decision.

What balls have you shown?

Not sure what the deflection tactic if for but based on my own life and relevant powers plenty thanks. Fought and put my neck on the line to support a female colleague being bullied by senior member of staff in a working culture that was absolutely toxic which put my own standing in the company and my potential future income up for doubt. I've donated and continue to donate time and money to work with my local pride in support of friends who want celebrate the freedom of their sexuality. Been in many a fight when someones made comments about sexuality against friends.

None of which makes me a hero but you asked, what point are you trying to make?

As much as anywhere in the world. But you never change people's minds, you change the culture and then wait for the old lot to die out.

You are talking a religion. They believe that GHod thinks homosexuality is a sin. We're asking footballers to go to their country and tell them their religious beliefs are wrong. That their GHod is wrong. Don't think they'd take that well.

We already have a badge that represents our values, beliefs and mistakes. It has 3 lions on it.
