It would rely on Sig and Vdv to get back and do some defending. If they did it, then it'd work alright.


But i'd still be concerned against the top 6.

VdV playing that role in those parts of the pitch would be a liability

Not really. Both him and Sig have a pretty high work rate, if they're going to play the pressing game and gang up on players they will be extremely effective.

As a midfield it is completely unbalanced. It is irrelevant though because we will never see it, Modric will be sold this summer and if VdV is with us next season he will play off a striker, the same as he has the rest of his time with us.

Work rate is one thing, but you need discipline as well. As in getting back right side of the ball every time, not just once in a while.

Move Modric (or Moutinho/Sahin) forward into VdV's position and put Hudd in there as the deep player ;)

Well how would he do that if AVB doesn't play a player off a striker the way we did previously?

Him playing off a striker in 4-3-3 is not significantly different to where he has played for us previously. If we line up like Chelsea did last season then VdV's most natural position are the ones that Sturridge and Mata took up at AVB's Cheslea.

Personally i do think it's significantly different. Him starting in a central advanced position allowed him the option to drop deep and look for the ball. AVB's formation appears to be faaaaaaaar more rigid than Arry's 'go out there and express yourself' tactic. He'll probably be instructed to do quite a few things he's not used to if starting in that RWF role.

Agree. Unfortunately though I think it is the only possible position that VDV does fit in the system, so if he cant do that role then I dont see a position for him in an AVB formation.
 
I just don't think Rafa has the pace to play the RWF role. His best position is in behind the striker but I think under AVB the main supports will be coming from those wing forward positions, with Sig attacking the box from deep.

This. Also Gallas and VDV appear to be the two outspoken strong personalities in our dressing room and if Chelsea is anything to go by AVB doesn't like his authority being challenged. For that reason alone I think the writing is on the wall for both VDV and Gallas.
 
Also thinking on the Lennon issue, Varela for Porto (unless I am completely mistaken) was a right footed player but held the width on the left. So he holds his position in order to stretch teams and create space for others, but if the ball does come to him, he can come inside and also be a goal threat. Varela has a 1 goal in 3 game ratio for Porto, so Lennon will need to get the confidence to score regularly if he is going to play in that system.

But I think that is definitely how we will line up...and I just hope to GHod the fans don't get on AVB's back about it chanting that they should be on their 'natural' flanks if he chooses to do it, because it will be absolutely embarassing. They will be playing as wing forwards who must contribute to the goal tally and that is made easier if they are on the stronger foot cutting in towards the goal. The issue of being 'shown inside' isn't really too big, because they won't be deep and nullified, they will be shown inside to the goal, or shown outside by which point our full backs will be up to support.

Bale will be our Hulk, and could potentially get 25 goals next season.

People moaned and bitched when he played on the right under Arry yet now it's a fantastic idea.
