AVB & Spurs Tactics and Formations discussion thread

Remy is the more obvious link (from what I can make out about him)

I also think someone like Hoilett should certainlty be on the radar

I've heard Remy isn't good playing that role? Hoilett to me is a right winger. I know it's not much of a difference but a right wing forward needs to be able to contribute in terms of goals. A player like Farfan, Lavezzi, and Sanchez are true right wing forwards but obviously only Farfan is realistic (is he even good nowadays?).

Actually i've worked it out. We don't actually need a right wing forward do we? i mean with the squad we have AVB can easily tweak his prefered formation so the left sided player is the "WING/Forward" and the right sided player is the natural winger that hogs the touchline. We have Bale that's perfect for the left sided winger/support striker/forward role and lennon can hog the right wing.

I dont know Remy well enough to say for sure, can only comment of what I understand of him.

Which is that he is very good playing in from the right channel (similarly to Henry in the left channel for Arsenal)

More of a striker than winger, but able to play out to the side more.

And I only suggest him as he has already been heavily linked.

Hoilett, IMO, could do the job brilliantly. He is a cracking player and will show his worth once he gets out of Blackburn.

Erm it's Wonky.

I don't know why, but wonky formations upset me.

I also think Livermore could be the surprise package of the AVB team next season

I would think that Sig signing pushes Livermore further down the pecking order and limit his first team chances. You can't really play more than one box to box player and Livermore has been poor when tried in other roles.

Proven by who? You may well be right, but who would go to all that effort just to make a hoax scout report lol!?

There were news stories on it at the time, and then it was laughed off. What makes it even sadder, is that there were about three different versions of the same document doing the rounds!! One speculation was that it was someone doing some sort of sports degree but more than likely it was just some statto having fun (just look at the effort and hours a lot of people put in customising facepacks etc. for FM!).

Gonna take my own advice and not clutter up the transfer thread.

We are really close to putting together a fearsome looking first XI/squad right now if our current targets are acquired.

--------- Friedel*
Walker Kaboul Vertonghen Ekotto
--- Sigurdsson Sandro Modric*
---- Oscar Ade Bale

Subs: Cudicini, Naughton, Caulker, Parker, Lennon, Defoe*, VDV*

Backup: Button, Fryers, Dawson, Livermore, Huddlestone, Falque, Townsend, Smith

Out: Gomes, Bassong, Khumalo, King, Gallas, Pienaar, Jenas, Bentley, Nelsen, Saha, Gio, Kranjcar, Corluka. Wow, that's a lot of players.

Players with * could possibly either leave or be upgraded on before the season starts. Wouldn't surprise me to see a couple out on loan either. This would leave us with Parker as the only outfield player on the wrong side of thirty. By no means do I expect that to be the set lineup, we could easily see some of the subs starting instead of what I think.

Oscar? nah prefer a natural right sided forward if we're gonna bring in someone in that position or i'll happily stick with Azza.

I have no idea who will start there, but I think that 18 man squad will make up the core for next season. Oscar, Defoe and VDV could easily be someone else though.

Just out of curiosity, what are you expecting a natural right sided forward to do that Oscar can't do? Just curious as I haven't seen Oscar much.

Continuing from the discussion in the Huddlestone thread:

Who are people seeing as the natural player in the defensive/deep/holding/furthest back midfield position for us next season?

Most people name Sandro or Parker, but from what I could see at Chelsea AVB preferred a real ball playing player in that position. In his system the deepest midfielder often drops in between the centre halves when the attacks start and then pushes up to somewhere close to the final third when the opponents are sitting/pushed deep. Really functioning as a passing hub and playmaker in there, very often available for a pass and asked to switch play from flank to flank as well as play some decisive balls into the final third. AVB often went for the inexperienced and untested Romeu instead of the more experienced Mikel to get the added passing ability Romeu offered.

If what happened at Chelsea is anything to go by we will be playing a patient and somewhat high risk style by building from the back very frequently. For me Sandro has some way to go before his passing is consistent enough to play this role well and Parker has some way to go before his passing is effective and attacking enough. Misplaced passes from this player will very often end up as extremely dangerous counter attacks against as the team has pushed up and he is one of the players furthest back so very consistent passing is needed, but at the same time effective and good decisive attacking passes are needed to act as the (deep) playmaker. If the passes from this player are slow or too low risk it becomes easier for the opponents to close down space. For Barca Busquets plays this role to great effect, having been described as the best one touch passer around by Xavi iirc.

I wonder if we could see Huddlestone in this role more often than a lot of people here seem to think. Maybe the coming pre-season games will be some indication.

Well be used to playing his natural position more that's for sure.

A right sided forward has to have the instinct of a striker imo. Not so much finishing but being in the right place and supporting the lone striker. Being used to starting from a wide position and coming in field, also being able to do a goodish job out wide should that be the better way of exploiting the opposition.

I am certain that Lennon CAN be sensational in that position. He has shown in the past a good eye for goal and when he runs inside he can be devestating.

Sadly I am also certain he WONT be sensational in that position, seems to lack the self belief to really do it.

Would love to see myself proven wrong though
