The Stats Thread

Tottenham Hotspur Season 2014-15 Squad Minutes Played

The combined stat is pretty meaningless tbh. In it Kane get the same credit for his wondergoal against chelsea as the player who passed it to him. You can cant compare goals and assists. Also comparing cup games and league games is ridiculous.

A minutes per league goals minus penalties is a good comparison.

Kane 136
Chadli 220
Eriksen 314
Adebayor 407
Townsend 754
Rose 791
Solado 796
Dembele 1140
Dier 1146
Lamela 1151
Mason 2326

And a tap-in goal gets the same credit as Dier's sublime cross against Everton, or Lamela's lovely through ball to Chadli...

It's not a perfect all telling stat, but it's far from meaningless. It shows direct goal involvements per minute. Over a somewhat larger sample size the amount of "free" assists like the pass to Kane for his wondergoal against Chelsea and tap in goals will even out and not be a big influential factor.

Listing central midfielders, attacking midfielders and strikers on a goals per minute stat is no more informative imo.

All stats can be made out to show one thing but as I have said before they very rarely tell the whole story.

The stats tell me that we came 5th in the league, and Chel53a won it. Are you saying that's not true????

The reason they are there is to show Rose of all people has similar goalscoring stats than Soldado!
If people wants to look at assist stats look at assist stats. They are valid for what they show. Don't throw them in with goals as 'direct goal involvements'.

You two say that only because you don't want Lamela to be near the top, and don't want to admit that Lamela has been more influential than most give him credit for.
Ha! Seriously, I didn't even look at the stats. It was the absurdity of putting assists on a par with scoring I was ridiculing.

But now you mention Lamela is third, just goes to prove my point. :p

It's not absurd, it's a pretty standard thing to do and it's been done on here for years.

It's a different perspective is all. It's not uncommon to define "end product" as goals + assists, it's a worthwhile perspective.

Now now, no need to talk down to me, I'm well aware it's been done here for years, THFC60-61 does it all the time. Doesn't make it any less absurd in my eyes.

Creating and scoring goals in football is absurd... I've heard some crazy brick nonsense in here, but this one.... I have no words!

Still find it amazing that we finished in 5th place in the league this season. Until recently we looked more like finishing in 7th or 8th place. Afterall, we only got 2 wins from 5 matches. But thanks to unexpected defeats for Liverpool and Southampton, we somehow managed to finish in 5th place.

Finishing in 5th seems to be our fate in the last 10 years. Until 2006, we have never finished in 5th place ever. We had finished atleast once in other 22 positions before that. But since then, we have finished 5 times in 5th place, more than any other positions.

----------------------------
TOTAL SEASONS = 80

So, out of our 80 years in PL/Div.1, we have finished in 3rd place the most which is 9 times. But disappointingly, we haven't achieved the top 3 places since 1990. Really don't like us finishing in 5th or 6th places. They are the positions for teams who have promised much but never delivered. Hope we will achieve the top 3 places soon.
