The new, new manager thread - Pt 3

Here is the breakdown of second choice votes

So is that showing that Team Poch and Team FdB kind of like each other, while Team RBM are sort of out on their own?

I hate proportional representation and all that ****.

The FdB and Poch second choice votes are practically a mirror of each other

Wenger had the advantage of inheriting the best defence in the league.

But there has to be something otherwise you have to come in to a the country and win the league with say west ham

You can pick positives with any of the top 6/7 teams actually coming here and winning with them is another matter but a few have done it now from the off

It makes me laugh that Levy is accused of always getting it wrong with regards to appointments, but then there are fans that are demanding we rush into appointing a new manager not even 2 weeks after the season finished and our old manager was fired.

Spot on mate.

We all want to wake up tomorrow and see the announcement, but in reality the difference between an announcement tomorrow and an announcement two weeks from now is relatively small compared to the difference between getting the right man for the job and not.

It's true that this is something the club has been working on for a while, but it's not like they could have interviewed Poch and FdB extensively mid season.

I'll close this down and post the final results over the weekend

Hi Grassroots,

You seem to know a lot about FDB, Ajax and Dutch football, so i'm interested in your views on the following:

- how is FDB's style of football (and the way he's likely to implement it with us) be different from how AVB tried to implement his Porto style both at Chelski and with us?
- Defensively, how do FDB's methods compre with AVB's?
- Will we be better offensively overall but worse defensively overall?
- Who of Ade, Kane and Soldado would FDB find most key in his preferred system(s)?
- Has FDB ever started a game playing two strikers? If so, how often would he do this in a typical season?
- Who of our CMs would be most 'at risk' of not getting games in FDB's preferred system?
- I have visions of us being too open away at the likes of Stamford Bridge, Anfield and the Emirates: please take time to tell me why I needn't worry about that (so much)!
- Assuming we don't buy in any more CBs (and that Kaboul is not crocked for good) who do you think will be our first choice CB pairing?
- What makes FDB different to Neil Lennon?

I will answer where I can tonight as on phone but will say franks system is nothing like avbs at tottenham or chelsea its about taking risks for reward score first defend second .
neil lennon :D naaaaaa

Hi Grassroots.

Any chance you could reply in more detail to my original post?
Thanks

Cissokho on loan (and Mignolet if you count him). Agreed that he hasn't impressed all that much in that regard so far.
Toure as well - seems to be a bit of a blind spot of Rodgers - which is strange considering he was praised for being the one who brought defensive solidarity to Martinez' more adventurous Swansea side

Tbf to Rodgers, the season gone could be a blip from a defensive point of view; in his first season as Liverpool boss, his side conceded the same as champions Manchester Utd, and only four sides had better defensive records in the league: Everton, Chelsea, Arsenal and Emirates Marketing Project

fair point that.

i saw a clip somewhere posted where Rodgers is speaking to someone about how it's goals scored which is the important decider when it comes to where you finish in the league (i think the talk was about how he is going to get Liverpool top 4) he was basically saying to reach their targets they need to focus on closing the gap on the sides above when it comes to goals scored - he's obviously done exactly that this season, so if he puts his mind to sorting the defense whilst not hampering their attacking prowess then he'll do very well.

A tough trick to pull off but it has got to be a priority because I think that they will be found out in the Champions League if they approach it like they have domestic competitions this year.

i dunno - we seemed to do ok under Redknapp in CL with an approach which seemed to be to attack first defend second. though obviously showed we could defend when needed to away and home to Milan.

if they approach the CL as an experience rather than a pressing need to go as far as possible then i think it won't matter much either way

I actually think that in most games in Europe, their approach will be even MORE fruitful. Apart from the experienced big guns, I think most teams in the CL are not used to playing against teams that hit you so early and then sit back. A lot of teams I think will drop their heads much earlier on than those in the PL.
Rafa's Liverpool always went far because they either set out to hit and stun early before reserving energy whilst solidifying. Heads of the opposition usually dropped before they stunned them with further late strikes.

I think Rodgers can do this but in a more entertaining way imo

I think particularly in away games it will be suicide but they have a chance of pulling it off if they hold onto Suarez. Like us though, they will come a cropper once they come up against one of the heavyweights

i think Grassroots post earlier can dispel the patchy European record point tbf - 3rd seeds every year and twice drawn in the group of death. certainly not exceeding expectations but neither falling below them.

maybe we should have had a pro/con thread for each of the candidates rather than the absurd carry on we've had in these threads where everyone just tries to shout the loudest

It explains their patchy CL record a lot, but what about their failure in the EL?

Have we got a new manager yet?

Even the speculation has got boring...

i guess the question would be how focused were they on the EL having dropped out of the CL? i don't know how close their league campaigns were over the 4 seasons but i can see them giving preference to the league possibly.

it's not too often you see CL drop outs take the EL by storm, iirc

**awaits some smart aleck to pop up with stats to prove otherwise**
