Which player would you like to see take over from Luka Modric?

If the Willian links are real and there's genuine interest from our side, I can see there being more impetus for VdV moving on, but it's still too early to say.

My guess is that Willian would be considered more as a back up / alternative to Bale or Lennon.

If there is any truth in the reports about VDV leaving, however, it does make Sherwood's presence at the Malaga game last night all the more interesting. Because Isco would be more of a like for like swap (from what little I have seen of or know about him).

20 mill back up? don't think so.

I would like to see VDV take over Modrics role, at least in games where we should be better than the teams we face. Especially all the home games. He has held this role in the national team on a few occasions during the European Championship qualifiers.
Yeah and he was absolute dog brick at doing it. In theory it should work (I was all for Harry trying to accommodate him in this role) - but in practice the opposite is true. He's not good enough positionally or defensively, and lacks the discipline to play in that position, IMO.

You mean AVB's, I presume!

As I said, I think a team playing a high energy pressing game cannot afford to be too often or for too long without the ball. The players will burn out early in every game.

Barca couldn't press as they do, when not in possession, if it wasn't for the fact that they tend to be in possession for 60-70% of every game.

So, unless AVB is to abandon his high energy pressing strategy, it is imperative that we sign a player who can keep the team ticking along in possession. Without Modric, we have no such player.

Yes - silly typo - apologies

Mourinho won 2 PL titles without such a player utilising a very similar formation (one of the best PL sides in the last 10 years, imv) - AVB as his disciple, perhaps is looking to make do with a similar layout and use the Modric money to re-invest in other attacking options.

Barcelona play a completely different game to Mourinho's Madrid (current version of his Cheslea 4-3-3) - who is far more attacking, direct and dynamic whereas the former is much more patient, slow and systemtatic.

If we go for him I hope he is as good as you think, I sincerely do, but as yet I simply do not share your confidence.

It also seemed to me he plays LW. Not sure he will get many games there...

SAF has 3 right-footed wide attacking players who are utlisied supperbly well on either flank - he certainly has the ability to adapt on either side. In addition - I strongly presume Bale with switch during games.

Yet each player is well versed in playing either side, Young being right footed made his career on the left.

I genuinely hope you are right about his ability. I havent seen enough to share that confidence, only enough to pose concerns at this point.

Not sure why you're discussing Mourinho's teams, mate. I'm talking about AVB!

And regardless of the manager, a team playing a high energy pressing game when not in possession simply can't keep it up unless they have the ball for the majority of the game.

Other than our lack of a proper lone striker, the main reason why we lost on Saturday was because we failed to keep possession well enough and so our pressing became increasingly less effective as the game wore on.

They don't have a choice - Young is the only exception due to his curling shot

So you haven't seen enough of him but you have seen enough of him to not be sure?

"Leandro is a fantastic player that I know of," said Villas-Boas of the Brazilian. "I went to see him in Brazil when I was doing nothing [during the summer]!

"He is obviously a good, good player but he is not on our prospect at the moment, because I think we are closed on what we are trying to do with the strike situation."

Asked about a reported offer being put in for Willian, Villas-Boas added: "No. He is a player I was interested in last year, an extremely talented player. I wouldn't want to go very deep because I feel it would be disrespectful for Shakhtar, which is a club I have a good relationship with.

Not committing either way.

Because AVB is playing the exact same systems his mentor did - Porto being the most successful example to date.

Chelsea made it work year back, I don't think it's impossible per se - although it's much easier with a ball playing player, granted
