Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

The energy crisis seems to be a bit of a perfect storm. A very cold winter caused european countries to deplete their stocks of coal and natural gas. Opec also limited output of oil. China and america then used a lot of their oil reserves as an f u to opec and dropping prices. Expecting them to increase output. They didn't and prices rose. With opening up china and other asian countries bought a lot of natural gas. Pushing prices high. The floods in china and india has flooded coal mines dropping their output. We also had low wind in europe meaning less electricity generated by wind farms. Russia has depleted stocks so are refilling but also using the high prices to leverage the eu to sign off on the nord stream 2 gasline.

Lets just hope it's a mild winter.

With Boris‘s habit of overspending and wasting money,I wonder what the final costs of the vaccines and the subsequent track and trace has wasted?
He spends government money when it suits like water.
He doesn't know how to conservative.

Frost is utterly shameless. What a disgraceful distortion of the truth that speech was. They are gunning for a trade war for reasons I cannot fathom.

I've only seen the BBC report, what did he say that has you so riled?

Would not have mattered with that what he said they would be angry.

The anger needs directing at Macron, the more you read from politicians around Europe how they wanted to get a deal done over Brexit, but the little guy in France kept playing games.

To think the are other borders around the world hell some bordering Europe where the are not the same issues. It is almost like the are some in the EU trying to cause problems for reasons I can not fathom....

Unemployment falling, wages booming.

We are probably looking at a world recession coming though. Chinas evergrande issues that may cause it's housing bubble to burst. The energy crisis, with china and india suffering massive blackouts. The bottle necks of supply chains and massive hike in costs of shipping. Things might get bad.

More investment in tech firms this year then France and Germany combined. Which is mental because no one would put money into this country full of racist scumbags.

It's 1.

If the EU insist on the old, pointless agreement then there's a simple solution. Agree to follow the agreement to the letter, then set a budget for for the customs department covering that area of £1 per year.

We're required to set our laws out to meet the agreement, we're no longer required to follow the EU's opinions on what we do with our finances.

Oh gosh, where to start.

  • The "old pointless agreement" is only 2 years old. Our government had one job - do Brexit - the current agreement was the best they could come up with. Not because they are stupid (incompetent maybe) but because it is an impossible task. You can't actually have the cake and eat it it transpires - open borders in Ireland but a closed border with the EU are mutually exclusive. What was sold as Cakeist is more cak-handed. I would agree it is pointless. We get fuk all back for all this headache.
  • The notion we can behave like 6 year olds and not play the game with the EU shows the kind naievity that got us into this mess in the first place! Grownups collaborate and make trade agreements based upon trust and mutal respect...so nations can exchange goods with ease, enhancing prosperity. Good faith. Partnership. Consistency. Respect. Scara's answer...behave like a toddler :p

This is an accurate, and funny, analysis of Frost’s speech….if you can call that crock of half-lies and fantasy a speech.

A trade war suits them as it keeps the Brexit spirit alive. Their whole method of governance is built on creating division.

This is the only plausible explanation. The EU have accommodated them far past the point most member states are comfortable with. They are bending as far as they can, but I'm certain it won't really matter what accommodations are made. The conflict is the point. They don't want any further easings of the protocol arrangements as it will only show the issues apparent on the UK mainland in starker contrast. They want the whole deal to fall apart and be damned with the consequences for NI. Disgraceful.

It's incredibly naive to think that this kind of thing doesn't go on all the time.

If you want an example, you only have to look as far as Calais and illegal border crossings. That is an area that is criminally under-funded by the French, because they see it as our problem and not theirs.

In a perfect mirror of that, goods getting into Ireland from the UK is the EU's problem and not ours. We will inspect some goods and stop things from time to time, but with no more effort than the French use to stop people drowning off their coast.

Not sure the investment in tech firms really trickles down. This country breeds confident boys who can write a plausible pitch deck which a succession of global funds with varying risk appetites can flip to each other. Each of those deals gets totted up from Crunchbase and touted as investment in UK tech. Meanwhile, almost no-one turns a profit and any coding work at scale is offshored anyway.

If we didn't need the EU for trade and various cooperation then we could be more relaxed or laissez-faire. Because Irish peace is a big thing, the EU, the US are all watching and expect us to make good our agreements. Obviously Frost is posturing, trying to leverage as much as he can. But it is wasted energy. Imagine the man hours and money that have gone into this, that could have been spent improving the NHS, education etc.

And we're not threatening Irish peace by putting a border up.

I sincerely hope the EU doesn't either - especially not in the name of outdated protectionism.
