Matthias Sammer, giant in the 90s untill his injury.
Was a bit weird to see him involved (Sporting Dir.) with Bayern, his Dortmund past considering

AZ Alkmaar are bracing themselves for an increased offer for Jozy Altidore after the Dutch side rejected Sunderland’s opening bid.

The Black Cats have made USA international Altidore their number one attacking target this summer as Paolo Di Canio looks to add more firepower to his squad.

And they stepped up efforts to land the 23-year-old this week with a formal offer.

AZ have not revealed the size of the bid but – understandably – they want to extract the best possible price for a player who scored 31 goals for them last season.

An AZ spokesperson confirmed: “The first offer was not sufficient. That we can say. Now it is wait and see.”

Altidore’s goals for AZ have brought him to the attention of clubs across Europe, with Sunderland one of two Premier League clubs to have shown interest along with two sides in Italy’s Serie A and two in the German Bundesliga.

However, a return to England – where Altidore spent a season on loan at Hull City in the top flight four years ago – is understood to be his preferred option.

His agent confirmed an English club – believed to be Sunderland – was leading the chase and there had been ‘advanced discussions’ between the parties.

Reports in Holland suggest AZ are not resigned to losing Altidore, who helped the club win the Dutch Cup last term.

However, his goal-haul last season means this is AZ’s best chance to cash in on their prize asset, and it seems certain he will leave this summer rather than stay at the midtable Eredivisie outfit.

Sunderland are on the verge of announcing a sixth new arrival, with Arsenal’s Italian goalkeeper Vito Mannone likely to complete his move over the next 24 hours.

...............

this summer's Benteke?? Cheapish striker that everyone else ignores and goes onto have a storming season in the PL?

The kid has come on a lot since his days at Hull. Tbh, if we were to sign Villa and Altidore id be delighted. Im sure Under Armour wouldnt mind either ;)

Christopher Samba: QPR agree £12m fee with Anzhi for defender

QPR have agreed a £12m fee with Anzhi Makhachkala for defender Christopher Samba, BBC Sport understands.

The west London club bought the former Blackburn man from the Russian Premier League club in January for £12.5m.

The 29-year-old centre-back signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with the R's and was reportedly earning wages of about £100,000 a week.

I'm so utterly confused... He was crap at QPR, why would they want him back.. :-k

This one caught my eye yesterday. The agents ( and possibly a manager or 2) will be laughing all the way to the bank. Mind you what do you expect from HR?

I'd much rather try for this kind of player rather than throwing 20m at the last summer's bargain signings, we need to find our own hidden gems.

I agree. Though Spurs did well last summer with Vertonghen and Sigurdsson, bought relatively cheaply and maybe not hidden gems but still good solid cheap buys with plenty of potential to improve and grow in value.

With Altidore, he seems to be getting better and better. Im sure it helps working with Klinsmann at the US national team too.

Not the best start.

Adidas spokesman Oliver Brüggen gave a fabulously German interpretation of his company’s reaction to Götze’s sartorial gaffe: “We were negatively surprised.”

Peterborough striker Dwight Gayle is expected to sign for Crystal Palace on Wednesday in a deal which could be worth up to £8.5million.

Gayle, who originally joined Peterborough on loan, made a big impact at London Road with 13 goals in 29 appearances but was not able to prevent their relegation to League One.

The transfer could be worth up to £8.5million including add-ons to Peterborough, while Dagenham and Redbridge stand to net a £1million windfall.

Dagenham inserted a 20% sell-on clause when Gayle moved to Cambridgeshire for £500,000 during the January window.
