*** OMT Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa FC ***

No it wasn't.

But the 2nd half was much better.
We were much the better side. They had the goal and one other chance. We dominated the play other than that. We didn’t create a lot of chances but we controlled the game and set a tone.

First halves can be difficult chance-wise but instrumental in grounding the opposition down and setting a tone. That was us today IMO.

First half wasn't great creatively, but Villa are a well drilled side. We made them work hard in that first half and it's not easy to keep that up for 90+ mins. We benefitted from it in the second half.
I think they tried to play dirty and it didn't suit them, this season, their strength has been the way they attacked and broken teams down.

I am happy they lost the way they did, Cash for starters and the fact they were flopping about the place like fish out of water.

Like I say, it was a good win.

Personally I don’t think it’s dominating if you’re not creating anything. As you said, Villa got the first goal and had the best chance of the half which Watkins thankfully wasted. Just having more of the ball and doing very little with it isn’t dominating in my eyes. Second half we did dominate them for sure.

We were better than them last season and it looks like we still are. They have a more pragmatic manager that helps them grind out some undeserved points, but I don't expect to see them in the CL next season. I think both teams are good for top 5 or 6.
We weren't better than them last season as the points totals showed. There wasn't a gulf or anything between us but we weren't the better side. The better side gains more points.

We were the better side, had most of the possession etc etc

Doesn't mean we played well, like I said, we was slow and ponderous, not creating enough, both wingers refusing to take on their men, aimless and pointless crosses into the box. Defence, midfield, and forwards not linking up well.

Villa were awful and we still struggled to break them down first half, and they still went in 1-0 up half time.

To me it wasn't so much ange but more what emery did after half time.

What changed was we equalised very early in the second half and villa decided to throw more men forward.

Emery made a mistake believing he had a better attack.

Fair enough. I wasn’t too worried at half time to be honest. Can’t say I thought we’d win 4-1 but thought we were relatively comfortable and in control. We were a bit more aggressive second half but thought we were well in control first half evidenced by them having to resort to slowing down the game at every opportunity.

No, play the best we can. This is why loaning out Philips, not including Djed and Reg in the list was so fecking stupid.

We always gamble with stuff like this and we never win and we never learn.

My thinking is with the position we are in the EL Group and the fact there are still 4 more group games as opposed to a 2-legged knock-out tie, we can probably afford to drop points in that league.
We dont really want to be dropping points next sunday

Villa's game plan allowed us to have 'control' it's what they do against any competent team away from home - we done next to nothing with it in the first half and it looked like it was gonna be one those days

I think from being the centre midfielder that appeared to be the bit part choice, he, like Kulu, is making himself unstoppable.

This side needs engines...and those two don't disappoint
I agree he had an indifferent start to the season and I don't think anyone was necessarily writing him off but if they had done so that was incredibly short sighted. He was one of the key men during the great 10 game run at the start of last season. A big part of the ball rotation and reasonably pressing resistant.

I've always had belief that he could put the good performances in again because for me he's such a well rounded player. I'm a bit of fan boy for him I can't lie but he just does so much of what I like. He's good technically, plays really positively etc.

I feel like these last couple of games are starting to gain him the plaudits that I think he missed out on last season which in its own way is a bit strange.

Not what our Moderating Overlords want to hear but I ignored this forum during the game.

Nice to just sit back and attentively watch the game without flipping back and forth to read the comments from people feeling the need to constantly bark about every little negative moment.

What a nice weekend. Arsenal lose, we win (our second impressive victory of the week). We scored really lovely goals that featured great team play and skill.

It's been a constant theme on Spurs telecasts that commentators look at our goals and the first reaction is to criticize the opposing defenders. Like our second and third goals came from intercepting passes and quickly turning them into attacks. No one ever mentions how Ange has set up the team and how our positioning made those interceptions possible. Today the world TV feed had Jim Proudfoot and Matt Holland on the mics and they are among my favourites to listen to. Yet when talking about the history of Spurs-Villa matches, they chose to focus on Villa's record at our stadium. It wasn't until after Maddison scored our fourth that they spoke of the 4-0 tonking we delivered last spring at Villa. I understand from some comments that Alan Smiff was back for his second straight Spurs victory. I can only imagine the slant his commentary took.

Hey Bishop! Ben Davies says Hi and sut ydych chi'n hoffi fi nawr?

How about that much maligned Davies? Great move to steal the ball from Onana and start the attack for Solanke's game winner. Defended well, too. Just a cool presence. Total pro. A lovely free kick from Maddison to remind the manager of what he's got. Good to Gruff-but-loveable Ange get his subs bang on again. I'm off to roll in the autumn leaves.

My mind was on the home game against them last season which we actually did dominate but couldn’t finish them off so was mindful of that.

Like you, I think the criticism he got playing on the right was warranted as he had become ineffective in that position. He looks at home playing CM, he’s got creativity, strength and works hard.

Davies was so good when he came particularly as it was (presumably) unexpected. Defended well, used the ball well. I was very very impressed with him today.

That made my 5am start worth while
Strange game
Villa don’t play very attractive football but are quite physical
Can’t work out how they plan to score other than route 1
We played almost the exact same game as we did vs West Ham IMO
Some great work out there for a number of players and a lot to like
The injuries though get worse and that’s gonna be a lot for squad management for Ange now
