Official - Holtby

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

Do you really think a few hundred thousand will harm us? there comes a time when it just becomes totally ridiculous and this is one of those times. We can't even agree a deal when the player is ours ffs.

Especially as were the 13th richest club in the world too, go out and spend some fudging money Levy and strengthen us so the top 4 place is an absolute minimum, dont think I could handle missing out again like in some of the past few years

No, i doubt a few hundred thousand will harm us. Would i pay a few hundred thousand if i didn't have to? No.

Jammy's point about offloading likely has relevance.

I've seen a lot of ups and downs over the years, false dawns, errors, you name it........but despite my mature years, I have to agree with marky on this viewpoint.
We really do have a chance to capitalise right now, but to do it, we need to spend to secure our position.

Speculate to accumulate, isn't it?

Come on Daniel, don't let us slide now.

Dont get me wrong im a massive massive Levy fan and am very glad he is our chairman but he really doesnt seem to get it sometimes

What do you mean you didn't have to? in order to buy the player you have to pay cash. Schalke apparently are asking for £1.6m to have the player now which is very reasonable and seems the correct valuation. We've bid 900k according to reports..and upped it by a few hundred thousand for the second bid. That's very small time to me.

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

what if Holtby gets injured in these Schalke games when levy could have paid the cash and had him here beforehand? he could have spent a week or two getting to know his teammates, the country etc etc. He's played 2 or 3 Schalke games since the summer transfer was agreed...1 injury in those games could stop us getting in a midfielder that we desperately need.

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

what if he gets injured after signing for us? :~

I agree, I am totally fed up with us only competing for 36 out of the 38 games per season as we always seem to need to strengthen the squad before the end of the summer transfer window (as we often allow disgruntled players to hang around for far too long).

We then get to the end of the winter window, and we are still no nearer to a decent striker signing, when we knew that Adebayor would desert us to play for his country in the ACoN.

Could we not be a tad more organised in our transfer dealings?

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

You don't see a difference?

not really - he gets injured at Schalke, we then wait until the summer to sign him - saving on wages over a 5/6 month period and transfer fee
we sign him, he gets injured then we are paying him wages to sit on the sidelines, plus the transfer fee.

if it's a minor 2/3 week type injury the player will still be able to undergo and pass a medical so i presume you are only talking long term injury? it's bad luck either way only one way sees us save some money, rather than waste it.

There's a big difference. If he gets injured for Schalke and is out for ..let's just say a month. We 9 times out of 10 will pull out of the January deal and wait until the summer. That deprives us of a player from march to may (around 10 games). That could be the difference between cl qualification.

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

that's guess work on your part KD - Sandro is out for the season - we need an extra man in midfield, every chance a minor injury wouldn't deter us from bringing him in early if it meant we could get 10 games out of him in the run in

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

He is fudging around over a few hundred k probably less, Holtby could come in and be the reason we get CL and £40m or win a cup, just pay what Schalke want

The window is still open as Jordinho said.

If we get him on deadline day for say 200k less that's 200k saved. Is it worth it to just shell out 200k extra to get him in for a couple of games more? I don't know, but I can understand that Levy is negotiating.

It's not a ton of money for a club like us, but we're doing quite a few deals each season in and out. Wouldn't be surprised if do close to 10 deals a season in total. If Levy can get the upper hand and consistently save or make some money on these deals that adds up and is money we can then spend elsewhere.

Schalke have apparently completed the signing of Michel Bastos

This is the key question.

For arguments sake lets assume he will arrive in this window. If he had arrived earlier and made the difference between one point or three, or even just one point when we were losing in just one game then 200k is nothing. If we were talking millions maybe there is an argument but in the PL you deal with such fine margins that a few hundred thousand is a gamble well worth taking.

If he's coming this window then just get him in now and stop messing around, is my opinion.

^^well atm Sandro is replaced by Parker and id imagine that'd be the case with or without Holtby, so it's not as pressing an issue as it would be if Dembele was injured, imv

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

Does anyone know what Schalke are actually asking for in terms of £ to complete this early? There was originally talk of £1.5 million.

They don't have to sell, deal is sorted for the summer. Could it be that they know we are 'desperate' to do the deal and are asking relatively silly money - our choices are to stay as we are til the summer (tricky given Sandro's injury), buy Diame or someone for £3.5 million+ (which would give us excessive players/wages come the summer) or pay for Holtby now (in which case the fact he is out of contract in the summer is irrelevant).

If I was Schalke I would be asking for £3 - 4 million as that is what we would have to spend on another midfielder. Maybe Levy doesn't see that as value for money.

How do you come to the conclusion that £1.6m is the "correct valuation"?

There is no such thing as a correct valuation. There is merely a valuation placed on a player by a selling club and a valuation placed on a player by a buying club. The two don't have to tally - at least, certainly not from the outset.

It is just as easy to claim that Schalke are being "very small time" by not accepting Spurs' £1.1m offer and, instead, haggling over a few hundred thousand. There's no difference.

The reality is that there is nothing wrong and nothing uncommon in what either Spurs or Schalke are doing. They are both working to secure the best possible deal for themselves. And that's as it should be. Still a week to go. If I was a betting man, I'd have a small punt on Holtby being a Spurs player by the end of the month and Schalke having in the region of £1.3 million in the bank. And both sides will be happy with the deal.
