Because he's a better manager ;)

Nah, I honestly don't know how Benitez would do at Spurs. I actually do think he is a better manager that AVB (and I still think AVB is and can be a very good manager) but I actually think managing us is a thankless job and I think he'd feel the pressure big time. I don't think he'd be bringing in a trophy every season either but I think we'd have our highest chance of one since Ramos.

And for the record, I never called him FSW. I've always considered name calling puerile and thought that he did a good job at Liverpool until his appalling final season (also his ridiculous decisions to buy Keane and try to replace Alonso with Barry, which I can only hope came on the end of a stroke).

How much compensation would Napoli want, and would that be ok with Levy?

If he came, it might be a busy summer because I could see Rafa having a clear out here...imcluding some 'fan favorites'. I suppose that could be true of any manager we get (and not sure some in here have thought much about this, in the rush to pile on Sherwood). But I reckon Rafa has some pretty firm ideas about the type of players he likes and doesn't like, and before coming here he'd want some assurances about how much power he will have here. Given his resume, he'd want some clout.

Yeah, wasn't directed at you btw...I agree with your last statement about the final season..

That would be my worry (though not bothered so much about the 'fan favourites' per se) and was the reason why LVG would have been ideal

His contract runs until next summer so €3.5m as that's supposedly his annual salary.

Whoever the next manager is, I can only hope he is a unifier. Redknapp was divisive, AVB was divisive and Sherwood was divisive (and just generally gave many of us a pretty **** feeling about our team).

Someone the majority of fans can get behind so that watching games at WHL isn't a chore and posting on gg isn't a battle.

It looks like Tottenham may have ****ed up their pursuit of a second Dutch manager to replace Tim Sherwood even before Sherwood has been fired or the season finally come to it’s close.

It’s a widespread rumour/assumption that Tottenham will fire Tactics Tim at the end of the Premier League season, with Spurs looking to pull in a bigger name manager to lead their revival over the summer and next season.

A while back it was thought that Louis van Gaal would take over at White Hart Lane after his contract with Holland ends after the World Cup, however that chase hit a roadblock when Manchester United moved in after sacking David Moyes.

After Van Gaal came reports that Spurs were tracking Ajax boss Frank De Boer, but after a week of quotes and denials of approaches and deals in the press, De Boer has seemingly shut the door on Spurs on Saturday.

After Ajax drew 2-2 with NEC Nijmegen the manager said ” I have no intention to leave. I’m happy to work another year at Ajax.”

Frank de Boer on Ajax future, "I expect to lead the first session on 23 June,'
" Again, I do not mind talking to an interesting club. That includes Spurs. But there is no interest."

He's hardly shut the door then. I want Rafa though so perhaps it's for the best(although I imagine we'd then go for Poch instead).

I agree we do need that; not sure if Benitez is that unifier though...LVG would have been more likely imo...oh well

Benitez is who I wanted us to go for after Harry. When we got AVB, I was all for us having this "project" manager and someone who might grow with the club and was willing to give AVB a chance to show what he could do.

But I am fed up of pretenders. If we have any chance of getting a coach who has won multiple league titles in a major, competitive division AND has a champions league win (along with a 2nd appearance in the final) AND who has won multiple other cup competitions, we should do everything we can to make it happen. He would be the highest calibre managerial appointment we have made in a very long time.

This is Spurs though, so we won't do the obvious thing. We'll go for the more unknown quantity, then scratch out heads when it all turns to sh1t.

Dunno what you mean... 8-[

I agree, I was actually going to qualify that with Benitez definitely won't unify.

LVG really would have been it the more I think about it. How sad. :(

Ah ********. FDB hasn't said no, but I think he's hedging his bets. If he came out tonight and said "I'm pretty sure this is goodbye" and then turned up for their first training session I'm pretty sure it would lead to bad relations between him and the club. By effectively saying "I love Ajax and expect to be here next season" he has kept his peace with the fans and if he does leave he can say that it was too good an offer to turn down etc.

We really need to sort this out within 14 days of the season ending.

A positive thing from his time at Chelsea was that he was successful inspite of a lack of unity. The players knew he was only a caretaker, the fans hated him. Yet he took them safely into the champions league in 3rd place and won the Europa. He also got them playing better football than Mourinho has done this year and he made full use of a skilful player like Mata where Mourinho had no interest.

I don't think the fans would be behind him, and that would be a negative. But I think he could cope with that, and if we start winning things then people would get onboard.

The worst indictment of our club and its fans...

I don't think everyone would be against him, but there would be a fair amount with reservations about the football we might end up playing. A couple of poor results and he'd get some grief -- but unlike some managers, I don't think this would phase him. If we can't get a suitably qualified unifier, then we need to get someone who can operate in a more fragmented club. He's shown he can do that, imo.

But...I think he has also shown that he can get a team playign decent football (Chelsea). And he's certainly shown that he's a winner. No appointment is bomb-proof, but there would be mroe logic behind Benitez than any other candidate that I can think of.

I'm not so sure mate, I don't think fans would be any less forgiving on him, than the rest of the realistic candidates.
The plus side for Rafa, he's thick skinned enough to handle it (see Chavs), where as the others, who knows.

He needs to join us, he is THE man imo.

But the club’s research ruled out language as a problem, with his use of a translator seen as a convenience not a necessity. Pochettino looks the strongest candidate to take over from Tim Sherwood — although Rafa Benitez remains under consideration.

The manager of Napoli, who took on Fiorentina in the Italian Cup final last night, is thought to have a release clause in his contract. [-o< (Although it's just a Daily Fail, but maybe they have a truth for once)

I like how that article headline has "Says Levy" without any quotes

sounds like he got a rollicking from somewhere (maybe us) about being too open, ties in with our statement. If anything still leaves it open saying he will talk to us.
