Gareth Bale

Re: Gareth Bale

People appear to see this diving situation as black or white. It, like most things in life, is anything but.

Exactly. Hence the discussion.
What I find strange is that when defenders pull back an attacker who will likely score that is never described as cheating. Or when a defender clatters into an attacker either to give him a "taster" or, as with the likes of Adam, to deliberately injure a fellow human being that is not seen as cheating.

I still don't get shielding the ball out of play. There is obviously no intent to play the ball, so blocking the attacker should be a foul.

Edit: just realised this isn't the thread about diving, so sorry for wandering off topic.

Re: Gareth Bale

I am not condoning it but I am also understanding that it is sometimes necessary for all players (not just ours) to take defensive measures to avoid serious injury. That in itself is not cheating. Top level skillful players (and much as I dont like him as a person, as a footballer, I would include Diouff in this) do take evasive action when they (note THEY not you or other sanctimonious supporters sitting in the stands) consider it necessary. That is not cheating.

Messi, Ronaldo, Bale, Drogba, Young, Gerrard, Welbeck, Diouff, Henry, Drogba, Klinsmann, .....have all be criticised as divers in the past. Apart from Diouff, would you rather not have any of them at Spurs because you consider them "divers"? Plainly ridiculous

You are condoning "it".

Re: Gareth Bale

He's not. He's stating that there is a middle ground that is neither foul nor dive.

It needs a name to make it real. How about a "paversion". Didier 'paverted' the challenge to protect himself for the cup final the following week.

Ron's paverted histrionics caused panic in the Toffees penalty area during the dying moments of the game. But no penalty was awarded.

Re: Gareth Bale

Bale against Croatia......apparently, after the run he made at 4.48 min he received a standing ovation

For many the scoreline on Tuesday read: Croatia 2 – Gareth Bale 0.

The Spurs winger was unable to repeat his Scotland heroics in Croatia on Tuesday as his former Tottenham team mate Luka Modric had the last laugh – winning 2-0.

Due to the music on the video below, it is not possible to hear the standing ovation reportedly carried out by the Croatia home support for the Tottenham star after the epic run on the video below.

Tottenham fans and boss Andre Villas-Boas will be hoping Bale still has energy left for the big London derby at White Hart Lane on Saturday lunchtime against Chelsea.

What. A. Run!

Re: Gareth Bale

Now that Modric and VdV are gone - our best player at the moment by quite some margin

Bale is simply brilliant - absolutely amazing. He has been our best player for the last couple of seasons and the stats bear this out.

One question though - why dont we utilise his long throw more?

Because he'd be aiming towards Defoe and Lennon?

Be interesting to see your reaction then if Chelsea win a late penalty tomorrow as a result of a dive which costs us points.

Re: Gareth Bale

Bale dives, its really is as simple as that. If he is getting out of the way of a challenge he gets right back up, but he doesnt. He stays down looking for a decision. Take Maloney as an example against Belgium. He moved as he thought he was getting whacked, but he didnt, he fell, but then got right back up, he appologised to the player and the game carried on. If Bale feels he has to move, then he moves and gets back up. Until that time, he is cheating as he is looking for a decision from a tackle that didnt happen.

p.s. What a fudging run that was.

Why dont we treat it like a corner and bring up Caulker/Verts/Kaboul. With Ade in there too - we have (or rather should have) good aerial superiority against most teams.

A refereeing mistake can be made for all sorts of reasons - handball, shirt tugging, bad tackle etc. What has "diving" got to do with it?

It is up to the ref to award a penalty if it is a foul. If it isnt a foul, then he shouldnt award it. Simple as that.
