Eric Dier

Has Dier really been turning down moves left, right and centre, like Ndombele seems to have been doing?

Has he shown any real inclination to warm the bench and collect his paycheck?

We're a couple of weeks into the season, and this is a player who was playing almost every match last season. He's an elite-level footballer -- the type of person with enough self-belief to fight for his place for a little more than 3 weeks.

Dier has been a loyal servant to the club, one of the stalwarts of our "golden generation", and has always conducted himself in a manner befitting our great club. Well, apart from when he decided to fight that fan! Or take a brick. Erm.

Anyway, Dier didn't get his head turned by a big Man U offer back in the day, when I'm sure he could have gone almost anywhere and doubled his salary. Let's give him some respect.
By "Elite Level" do you mean that in the way that all top division footballers are in the elite grouping due to them being the best out of the billions who play the game? Or do you mean he's an elite level player relative to his peers, ie. In the top 10 players in his position?

Definitely the former! To get to be a regular in a top half Prem team must take huge mental strength and self-belief, as well as talent.

I'm not for a second arguing that Dier is one of the world's top players. I don't even think he should be anywhere near our 1st XI on recent form. It's just that I have huge respect for the 10 years he's spent at Spurs.

I agree with that sentiment 100%

We're on the same page.

More worryingly perhaps is the fact that he isn't getting the option of moves to turn down, has his stock really fallen that low? Surely there is somebody out there that wants him? Granted nobody is going to pay him the £80 odd grand a week that we are paying him but surely we can subsidise some of that to help grease a loan move?

Regarding that Man Utd move, I don't think there was anything there to make one's head turn was there? Some rumoured interest that was never actually followed up with a bid.

A loan move is bad for us. He's out of contract next summer. We can't have players starting to turn down permanent deals in order to run their contracts down and leave on a free. It would cost us too much in the long run. We have to put our foot down. Accept a deal or you are not getting any game time. Get the message to the other players that's the cost.

Seems to me that we have already made it reasonably clear that he won't be getting game time by him not being included in a single squad so far this season. That's why I was also suggesting going the whole hog and making him train with the under 21s (both because there's no point in valuable coaching time being wasted on him and also as it might help force him to move). There are some on here though that don't think it would be acceptable to treat Dier that way though for some reason.

IMO, if Dier is determined to leave on a free (as is his right) then we're better off financially loaning him out than having him sit around and paying him £4m this year to do so.

It's not just him though. If he does it other players will aswell.

Hopefully he gets a move to germany. Otherwise we keep but he's 4th or 5th choice cb. Depending on who comes in or goes.

If we aren't offering a new deal (we shouldn't) and he's not had any appealing permanent transfer offers then if we can loan him out we should. Let someone else pay his wages until his contract expires and he moves on to new surroundings.

As i said it sends out a terrible message to the other players. That if they sit tight they can run their contracts down with no repercussions. We would lose out on tens (if not hundreds) of millions of pounds of future transfer revenue.

what about the message from not honouring our contracts?

think that would be worse imo

What repercussions are we exhibiting by not sending him on loan? Because it looks to me that either way players are able to run their contracts down

The United “move” really gets overplayed on here. As you say, it’s not clear if they actually made a bid. Let’s not kid ourselves, United are a much bigger club than Spurs but we were a better team than United at the time.

That he will be 4th or 5th choice cb and unlikely to get many minutes. Unless there are a few injuries.
