Christian Eriksen

In both games against Leicester we lost our attacking momentum once Eriksen was subbed imo. He doesn't tackle hard, he isn't physical and he's corners are poor but the lad knits things together and helps us tick as an attacking unit.

Yesterday there were other players who were below par, Kane was back to his "desperate to score mentality" shooting everywhere and anywhere, a bit like at the start of the season. Is he average because he has only manged 1 goal from the spot since the Boxing day?

Completely agree with this. He's always an option and doesn't lose the ball. He's vital to our attack even if he isn't scoring.

Agree with this but still think he has been having an average season by his standards. Definitely out of sorts. He looked more comfortable today, and it is absolutely fair to say that having Dembele back makes a huge difference. I think it's fair to say that he doesn't quite manage to dovetail as well with Carroll.

I think Eriksen feels more comfortable with a more physical player like Dembele playing rather than Carroll, it allows him to be a little freer with his play.

I think Eriksen feels more comfortable playing against relegation fodder like Sunderland rather than Leicester, it allows him to be a little freer with his play ;)

Eriksen holds talks with Pochettino over lack of starts in No10 role
by tom collomosse

Christian Eriksen is growing increasingly mystified at a lack of opportunities for Tottenham in what he believes is his best position.

Eriksen started in the No10 role — just behind lone forward Harry Kane in the 4-2-3-1 system — in Wednesday’s 1-0 home defeat by Leicester in the Premier League but he has usually been asked to operate from the left flank by Mauricio Pochettino.

Standard Sport understands Eriksen has discussed the matter with the head coach and while he will accept whatever instructions he is given, the 23-year-old Denmark playmaker feels he would be able to offer more if he plays centrally — as he does for his country and as he often did for Ajax before moving to England.

Eriksen was given the job for the first two games of the season, against Manchester United and Stoke, before a knee injury kept him out of the starting XI until the home defeat by Arsenal in the Capital One Cup on September 23. Eriksen started as a No10 in that game but he has rarely played there since.

This season, Pochettino has normally used either Dele Alli or Mousa Dembele just behind Kane. Ryan Mason also played there in the early weeks of the season, as did Nacer Chadli and Heung-min Son but Dembele or Alli has been preferred when fit. Even Josh Onomah, who has yet to make a Premier League start, was chosen ahead of Eriksen in that spot for the 2-2 draw against Leicester in the FA Cup last Sunday.

Eriksen was signed by Tottenham in the summer of 2013 for £11 million, largely on the strength of his displays in the No10 spot for Ajax. Andre Villas-Boas, the Spurs head coach at the time, called Eriksen “a pure No10” but under his successors, Tim Sherwood and Pochettino, Eriksen has typically played on the flank. Pochettino demands speed and athleticism from his No10, regardless of how creative he may be, and Eriksen played well in that position for much of last term.

Eriksen is out of contract in the summer of 2018 and has attracted interest from Juventus and Paris St Germain, whose manager, Laurent Blanc, has spoken of his admiration for the player. But Pochettino insists Eriksen remains content at White Hart Lane, saying: “He has said he is happy and that he wants to stay. He is young and he knows he is important for us. He has a future with us.”

Think he was poor up until his first goal, IMO. Much better after that, not quite his best yet, but hopefully his two goals will give him confidence to push on to his very best again. An in form Eriksen for the remainder of the season could very well be what secures top four or even better for us.

Glad Poch said this, as even when Eriksen is below his par he is key to us:

"He's one of the best players we have. He's a very talented player. But we need to understand that he's very young.

"He's only 23 years-old and we need to give him the opportunity to have ups and downs at different periods in his career and over the season but I'm very pleased for him because I know when you don't score.

"I'm pleased for him and the squad, his teammates are very happy for him.

Remember when we had a freekick out wide. Defoe was in the 2 man wall but clearly itching to go and mark Trips. Eventually Defoe breaks away and leaves a 1 man wall. Pretty sure it was Eriksen taking it. He laid it slowly to Trips who had Defoe closing him down, so just fannied around and chipped it forward tamely. Sunlun hoof it upfield and suddenly have 2 men bearing down on goal with Rose and Trips chasing. Comedy of errors. When you have a good position, and everyone in the box... make sure you get a decent delivery in which someone might contact, and make sure you have some defenders ready to defend!

Eriksen is one of those players who suffers from the perception that he should be further along simply because of how long he's been playing at a certain level.

Poch is right, let him have his ups and downs (along with the other young players we have)

Nice to see Eriksen scoring 2 goals against Sunderland. But we cannot rejoice yet as he seems to score against Sunderland every time. He has now scored 5 goals in 4 matches against them. But he did score against Leicester in the FA Cup. Hope he can continue his goal run in the replay as well !

Want him to 'hustle' more. In the way Kane does, push his way into goal scoring position. He kind of did that yesterday in that his strikes were not the sweetest, but got two vital goals. Smaller players should nip in, stand their ground and be terriers. Eriksen could do more of that. He's almost too polite where someone like Agero is street wise.

Amen to that, IF their is a downside to having lots of young players in the side its that they will be ( in most cases) a little inconsistent. I think there is a lot of rubbish said about how poor he has been this season and its great to see that Poch ( along with most fans) agree with that.

I don't think his overall play and creativity are that much worse than last season, the problem is, last season he was WINNING games for us with crucial late goals, he has scored in only 2 games this season but he hasn't actually won us any points, although he has saved some for us.

I'm a big fan of his so I would stick with him because I don't think we have better alternatives, but we need more from him if we are going to finish in the top 4.

Something nobody seems to have picked up on...we got a penalty yesterday with 10 minutes to go, 3-1 up at home to one of the worst teams in the country. Eriksen had already scored twice and the best way to shut up Didi Hamman who had criticised him on MOTD the week before would have been to score a hat-trick. But...Kane stepped up and took it. On one hand you could say Kane is our penalty taker, scored it, and we had to do a professional job to finish the game off. But I want to see Eriksen standing up for himself a bit more. The guy seems to bottle every 50/50 challenge and I'm starting to wonder if he's actually a massive pussy.

Not sure what the solution is, but I really hope we can unleash a bit more fighting spirit in him and get to see more consistent output from him in the second half of the season. To have a good season it's crucial that you have different players that peak at different times to maintain consistency, so I think it's only natural that Kane, Alli, Dembele and Lamela are likely to have a slump at some point. But if Eriksen steps up and plays like he did in the first half of last year, we probably won't even notice.

Contract negotiations going on? Fantastic. Players always seem to hit form when that's happening.
