I must admit i am not his biggest fan but he played well yesterday.
For me another "never" game after the previous "now" game.On his day, he's near unplayable (seen it last season in the games before his suspension, seen it for Brighton), consistency matters.
Think having a fit Bentancur competing and the fact that he clearly sees himself as "big brother" to Sarr can make a difference, but he's in his prime, this is a now or never for him (pre this season, saw him as one of the next obvious upgrade areas)
It works very well some of the time. But I'd rather Sarr in for Maddison when games are in the balance, then bring Maddison on if we are on top by not breaking through.Basically Ange is asking him to play as Rodri (best in the world) does with worse players around him. It is ridiculous now with Maddison and Kulu in front of him. It's the system which is making him look worse than he probably is. Same goes for Bentancur when he's put there too.
Every game is in the balance when you start. I'd rather we start like this all the time, and then the manager can gauge whether we can take the handbrake off.It works very well some of the time. America's best forward plays for Falkirk or someone, so its not a high barI'd forgotten about this guy; I think we agreed a low fee for him, last summer?
I get how that would make things difficult for him defensively. But defensively through the middle we've been mostly fine imo.Basically Ange is asking him to play as Rodri (best in the world) does with worse players around him. I've said for a while that we need a deep switch passer. Someone who can hit the corners or cross field with low and accurate passees, especially with wide players like Johnson, Son and Werner who do best when running on to balls in space and struggle when faced up against defenders.I get how that would make things difficult for him defensively. With the ball playing with two players with real quality on the ball like Maddison and Kulusevski should be really useful.
To me in a way the system/selection makes him look worse. If he had another deep player next to him with a really good passing game to take more of that responsibility he probably would look better.
As it is his weaknesses in his passing game are really getting exposed, particularly in some game states. I'm not in the habit of watching games back, and definitely won't watch the Palace game back, but from memory there were a lot of situations where he had options to pass had he seen them and released the ball earlier.
Personally I would like Maddison to drop even deeper and deep more of the time when we're struggling to get out through a press. Try to take more of that responsibility off Bissouma in those circumstances.
We have poor passers in the team. The inability or assume unwillingness to hit cross field passes is scaryI've said for a while that we need a deep switch passer. I remember going to the Quarabag match and honestly Johnson was wide open for a pass into running space for at least 70% of the match but we never once played that ball. We have a lot of short and neat passers but other than Porro noone who can accurately hit a player over a longer distance. I really think it would step us up a level to add that quality to the midfield, and the additional variety would make us so much more dynamic.
It struggles against 3-5-2 if they pressMust admit, I find it hard to hang Bissouma out to dry for his Palace performance. I could easily do that with Madds and Kulu who were ahead of play so many times and completely stitched their team mate up. I could hang the manager out to dry as well for being naive again.
The one thing I could probably kick Bissouma's arse over is not having the leadership to lambast his 2 team mates and stop leaving him high and dry. He is 28 and has a fair few t-shirts at this point in his career. I could also lambast our other 2 so called leaders Romero and Madds for not making on-field tweaks as well and getting control in the middle of the park.
I'm definitely left wondering how Ange's system works against a 3-5-2 system. It seems setup to disrupt other 4 at the back systems and the key elements in it don't have the same impact. It is something for him to think about.

Palace are very food at that
You need to pass better and retain the ball more
But we will get killed against any decent side playing that way if we don’t have a Better pass success rate
We hit a low of 79% at the weekend at some point
I agree. But I also think a more metronomic, tempo setting, "press resistant" type passer who is better at short and mid range passing deep in midfield would be super useful to us.I've said for a while that we need a deep switch passer. I definitely wouldn't want to hang him out to dry. He is the player he is. I do agree, either approach would be a big improvement I just think with the way Ange sets us out and the wide players we do have (Johnson In particular) that having someone able to play those longer distance accurate passes would really free them up and make the best use of their best attributes (pace, finishing) and negate their weaker areas (dribbling, control in tight areas).I agree. But I also think a more metronomic, tempo setting, "press resistant" type passer who is better at short and mid range passing deep in midfield would be super useful to us.
To take it to the extremes of world class players you're essentially describing an Alonso type player. Would no doubt be super useful. But even accepting someone not quite at that level they're rare and very rarely combined with the necessary defensive ability for our needs.
The Rodri/Busquets type players, more focused on short and mid range passing, but super effective and purposeful with their passing, being press resistant. That would make a big difference too if we couldn't find that "switch passer" imo. Even if not quite at that very highest level of individual quality.
