Will Lankshear

More importantly …. How was the trip and also the same to @billyiddo who I think went too?
It was good all in all.
Yes a pain having to get the buses and the delay in setting off was annoying but I have to say that once we got moving, the Istanbul traffic police were excellent in the way they managed a convoy of around 30 buses, stopping traffic along the way so we had a pretty much clear route through. Queuing to get in was a pain. Well it was for me as I was on one of the first coaches to leave which unfortunately meant I ended up being furthest away from the entry point when the buses offloaded us so it took a good hour or more to get through ticket check, initial search, turnstiles, then second search.
I had read about Man Utd supporters being there last season and that was a nightmare as it was pouring with rain. We were lucky in that respect because I hate to imagine that experience in rainy weather.
Once in the ground everything was fine. And the hold back wasn’t too bad. It was less than in Milan a couple of years ago.

There was no chance of engaging with Galatasaray supporters.
Inside the ground yes the atmosphere was brilliant and I imagine being out on the pitch would be intimidating. Personally I just found it all very noisy and whistly and very orchestrated. But a cracking atmosphere nonetheless.

A great experience only marred by the result.

Glad you was safe and enjoyed it, did you get to visit any of the city too ??

After starting our previous 2 Europa League away fixtures was slightly disappointing to see Lankshear left on the bench whilst an exhausted Son once again showed he ain’t no CF.
Agreed. Not sure if Lankshear would have made much of a difference, impossible to know. But Son starting and playing a full game again will only mean more games where he's not playing well imo. He seems in desperate need of a breather.

Do wonder if part of it that Son plays because he's captain. Not that this makes him undroppable, but that we need whatever leadership we can get out there with several important players missing.

If we was 5-0 upq ay halftime, we didn't we give Lankshear a good run out and Solanke a rest?

Sub at half time.
He used all five subs. Probably left a couple of them until later on instead of injuries and such.

We rather obviously wanted to slow the game down, but also keep a clean sheet.

He took off the players more in need of a rest first. Solanke and Kulusevski didn't start against Rangers while Maddison, Son and some others did.

We finished the game with Gray, Bergvall, Dorrington and Lankshear on the pitch.

Another game where we won and 5 subs were used. Seems to be the pattern.

If we were 0-0 after 70 you get the feeling he'd finish the game in these tough circumstances using 3 subs, perhaps 4.

Still haven't seen enough data points yet this season, but I do get the feeling Ange would love to have 5 subs he trusts when we are chasing games. The problem is we lost Richi and Odobert so early in the season. He's operated with a thinner attacking bench for a while.

Sub at half time.

Because we are on an absolute brick run, and have given up multiple half time leads this season.

If Southampton had fluked a goal or two in first 10 minutes of the 2nd half and we had a bunch of kids on, Ange would have been crucified. The importance of that game was such that -> win -> keep clean sheet -> rotate players in that order.

Yes, would have been create to sub off Son, Deki and Solanke at HT, but we aren't/weren't in a position to do that

I agree with this. But at the 70min mark at 5-0 that is the moment. A good quarter of the game. Not a few mins.

I think 5-0 is comfortable and it's Southampton, not an inform Liverpool.

And if we can;t hold a 5-0 nil lead, then heads to need to roll.
