I was pretty gutted last night. Well, more about losing such a good lead over Arsenal. We dropped the sort of points that we should be picking up (Stoke home) whilst Arsenal picked up the sort we hoped they would drop (Everton away). For all the grumbles I have about how we played I do think we played well enough to win - Bale's effort has been replaying in my head like a nightmare. And the goons got some shocking luck with that offside. It's made me realise that its finishing about that lot thats the main thing for me. Winning the cup is great, finishing 4th is great, finishing 3rd is great.... but for me, finishing above Arsenal is maybe what I really want to see. A discussion for another time, each to his own I guess.
Anyway, trying to get "over" that, the bigger picture is we're still in a good spot, no a great spot, and one we would have taken at the start of the season. 9 games, 1 point behind Arsenal. 5 points clear into a CL spot. In the draw for the semi-final of the FA Cup, a home QF against a lower end of the table team. The highest ranked team still in that competition. Bale, Modric, Lennon still here. So what should be the game plan from here till the end of May? Where to now, Tottenham Hotspur?
Saturday is clearly a big match. But priority has to be not dropping out of the top 4 - and keeping Chelsea at bay - rather than thinking about third. So it is a must-not-lose game for us. Now, I don't think we should go an park the bus at Stamford Bridge, because I do think they are there for the taking. We should just play out natural game, possession and counter attacking.
If we can come through that game with a draw we are very much back in business. A win, and we would be back in the running for 3rd IMHO, as 4 points out of the Stoke and Chelsea games would have been par for the course.
Bolton in the cup should be straightforward, actually. They will come to us with some fire for sure, but they will already have played a game in a competetive (if not hostile) environment with a derby this weekend. I think there will be a friendly atmosphere with a lot of goodwill - unlike the gamesmanship of Stoke last night - which would suit us if we are just professional and play the game. Bolton have the bigger mental battle.
Keep our nerve in the next two games and we should be looking at an FA Cup semi final, and top four very much back on.
Tactics wise, we need to keep Bale, Modric, Lennon, Adebayor on the pitch where possible. VDV or Defoe was the dillema that we wrestled with while we stormed to third, so that should be the choice again. Saha either starts on the bench, or on the bench. Never again do we play him as a lone striker. I do think there is mileage in him playing alongside Adebayor, but its not what we should be depending on.
Kaboul is the first choice CB now, because he will be fit every game. Rotate Ledley and Gallas, and that should see us through.
Rest Parker when necessary. But he is first XI when fit. Trust Livermore, he has not let us down yet.
Trust Sandro, but tell him what to do before he gets on the pitch.
Bale on the left. Lennon on the right. I personally like the inverted wingers for short periods of a game, but only with those two.
If either are out, replace with either Kranjcar, VDV or Rose (left), Livermore (right).
Practice corners.
Bale, Rafa, Modric: practice free kicks in training. Don't let Benny or Younis practice free kicks during a match.

From where we are today, 22nd March 2012, we should still be getting fourth as a minimum. After that, new manager in the summer, secure Modric and Bale for the immediate future and then get a couple of quality players to take us forward. An improved team, new stadium taking shape, CL back at the Lane - all still a realistic dream for 2012/13. COYS!
