what has happened to the transfer section?

a better comparison in terms of where they are in their careers and ages would be between Benteke and Damaio, and imo i think Benteke is overall the superior player because of the qualities listed above by Rossi

How is he not promising? He's just turned 22, he starts up front for the best up-and-coming football nation in Europe, he has a 1 in 2 record in his first season in the Premier League despite being handicapped by the fact he's playing for a GHod awful team. He has scored some very impressive goals and been involved in other impressive goals ... I really don't know what else you want him to do?

Because i've watched him and i don't think he possesses the ability to be a top player.

He starts up front for belgium? Why does that matter. His only competition is Lukaku, who i rate far higher. Just that he made the mistake of going to Chelsea and ended up sat on the bench.

1 in 2 in his first season? Yes. Just like so many other players who have failed in the long term.

I want him to show a technical ability and mental strength that would show he might have a chance of making it. He hasn't thus far. He can finish and has physical strength along with a bit of pace. Other then that i haven't seen anything.

In fact he would be perfect for Stoke.

Should probably leave it there. You see something, i don't. I'd still rather have Gomez than Benteke. You'd rather have Benteke. I can't see either of us changing that.

 how exactly?

How many of those were aged 21 playing for a bad team?

I'll stop now. I know who of the two we're more likely to sign. If we sign Benteke then great, not because I like him but I trust our management to sign the right players. If not then they know best. All I'll say is I don't see a plethora of alternatives out there.

By actually trying when the team goes behind or a couple of calls go against him. His head goes down and he spends the next 20-30 minutes standing next to the CB's sulking.

:-k hmm you seem to be a Benteke and Villa expert then and you must watch them a lot

anyway, seems one of his team mates thinks Spurs and Arse are too sh!t for our Benty and he should in fact aim higher!!!!
....................

Gabriel Agbonlahor has put the boot into Arsenal and Tottenham by suggesting Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke is too good for them.

Benteke has been one of the few bright spots in a season of toil for Villa this season. The forward, a summer signing from Genk, has netted 11 goals despite the Midlands club struggling towards the foot of the table.

The Belgium international has been linked with summer moves to Arsenal and Tottenham, but his fellow Villa striker Agbonlahor feels Benteke should be aiming higher.

"I think he's good enough for even higher than them (Arsenal and Tottenham)," Agbonlahor told Sky Sports News. "He's showed that by the way he plays with his composure for a big guy and he has quite a bit of pace as well. There are many aspects of his game that are at the top level."

Lauding his team-mate, Agbonlahor said: "Christian is one of the players of the season for me so far.

"He's going to get linked with the top clubs, especially because of his age. He's young. He's gifted in what he can do so he's going to be linked with a lot of clubs."

Benteke no thanks.

We don't need another striker who plays on the shoulder of the defense and constantly wonders offside and whilst able to hold the ball up possesses a very average pass completion rate, we have Defoe and Ade for that. The Belgians would tell you they have a fantastic young side with quality across all areas except up front where they do not have a proven striker as yet, damn they've been relying on Mirallas for years and his scoring record is abysmal for his country.

So many players have arrived on these shores over the years only to play a blinding first season then fade away never to reach those heights again, I predict Benteke will add to those numbers, and I wouldn't say he's even had a blinder so far, good but nothing more.

Of course a team mate is going to big him up.

I watch Villa whenever they are on, and live in birmingham so know a number of villa fans. They are split on him as well, but are far more concerned about Lambert still being in charge.

Hmmmm. I disagree with you that Benteke doesn't posses the ability to be a top player. He has power, he has pace and he has skill. The rest (awareness, the right runs to make, etc) can be coached. He has come into the Premier League at a young age and adapted to the physical and frenetic nature of it very quickly. He definitely has the raw attributes to work with and has already shown improvement as he has got used to our game.

Of course Gomez would be preferred, but one player is playing for a team two notches below our level, the other is playing for a team two notches above our level. I think Benteke would be happy to sign for us and fit into our wage structure. Gomez, I think, would be looking for a bigger and better offer than us.

To go back to Darren Bent.... my thoughts are that he is a very good player... In a specific sort of side. IMO he isn't at all suited to play for a top 6 team because his game is all about playing on the break. He is very good at getting into goalscoring positions when the opposition have men commited forward and he specialised in scoring goals in those situations for Charlton and then also at Sunderland and Villa. For a team like Spurs however, those spaces don't open up nearly as often. We tend to instead play against teams who are very deep and defensive. This means that we need our forwards to be heavily involved in the build up play, to make space by being able to take a player on, spot a pass, drop off to pull a defender out of position to create space for a midfield runner, bring our wide players into the game, hold the ball up to give our full backs time to get on the overlap, etc, etc. Bent is poor at all of these things. Doesn't make him a poor player, just makes him unsuited to teams that typically control posessoin and territory. I guess he is the exact opposite of Berbatov (who I think we really should've resigned last Summer).

How many of those were aged 21 playing for a bad team?

not so sure on their ages but there are countless examples of new to the scene strikers playing for either a promoted side or a lower table side that have a great first season and then tail off in to mediocrity

Stewart, Phillips, Beattie, Ricketts to name the first which spring to mind

Close to a consistent 30 goal a season striker at club level over the past 5 seasons. 28, 35, 14, 39, 41.

The 14 looks out of place, but i think you'd forgive him for the sheer number in the rest.

Agree with the bold..

the question now has to be raised. how would defoe fare in a bayern munich jersey? my money is on him getting similar to the donkey boy gomez

I prefer to watch the players and base my opinion from that, rather than reading numbers off wiki.

Bless you mate. Stick to this no matter whose ideas or opinions you clash with

It everything i can do not to make sweeping comments about people that think Gomez is one of the best in the world. My days!!!

Not seen anything of these three. What i've seen is a player who's head drops when he gets called offside or pulled up for a foul and then he sulks and doesn't get involved at all.

Physically he has it. In terms of technical ability and mental strength i have yet to see any of it.

Who cares about reasons spurs would take Benteke over Gomez? Those are not reasons to decide who is the best player. None of those are footballing reasons. If Benteke is the striker we are going to go for then i guess we will still be looking for that talent up front come next year.

you havent seen benteke harrass the defenders? care to elaborate?

i'm not saying benteke is better than gomez by the way. am just saying i dont rate gomez that highly AT ALL

On the scale of Berbatov to Tevez in defender harrassing he's closer to Berbatov. (imo)

Gomez is a striker. Strikers are meant to score goals. He scores a lot of goals. Thus i rate him highly.

Granted you can have strikers who add to all round play. However if you are scoring as many as Gomez has you don't really need to.

at least you have a logical and valid reason for rating that giraffe. i cant fault your reason for rating him.

if all you look for is goals then i certainly am star systems apart from the kind of players i rate relative to their position in comparison to the way you rate them

you might have apoint about benteke but i will say that he has a way of getting all up in defenders anus'. he is constantly trying to throw his weight around. not sure that means harrasing them but i do feel he is a constant handful in general. a right pain to deal with physically..not that he is like hulk strong or flash quick if you get my meaning

No goals aren't everything i look for. However there is a point at which the number of goals you score means the team can afford for you to not be as useful all round.

Hope that clears that up.

Eh, i just don't rate him. Fair enough to those who do, but i am hoping we have our sights set on undiscovered talents somewhere.

but you would rate benteke if he scored brick loads and was still as he was now how you perceive him right?

so if we put benteke in barca and he gets like 30 then you'll rate him?

I would rate Benteke if he scored brick loads yes. But he doesn't and as he doesn't he should add more all round game to the team. Which he also doesn't imo.

Why would we stick him anywhere? I don't think he'd get 30 at barca. Their play style would not suit him in the slightest and he'd lose the ball a hell of a lot.
