Welcome Ange: To Dare is to Didgeridoo

He seems to be picking the ball up from our area and driving through to the attack. Wanyama/dier was more the defensive midfielder rather than dembele.
It was always a double pivot under Poch (and AVB before that with the excellent Sandro / Dembele axis). Dembele was equally as good defensively as his DCM partner, but he was just able to do more when he got it. He wasn’t playing AM though except for the handful of times he was asked to play there when he worked his way back in to the team at the start of Poch’s reign.

In some ways I agree. Dembele played in a DM "position" as one of two deeper midfielders in a double pivot. But always (when successful) next to a more typical DM (role) like Wanyama or Dier. Dembele was never the DM (role) player. More freedom to get forward, more freedom/responsibility to press higher. The other player had more of that positional responsibility.

Maddison is similar in that he can twist, turn or glide past players. But his role is different. He drops deep at times, Dembele started deep most of the time. Maddison has the freedom to roam, Dembele had to pick his moments. Maddison also has end product and his role reflects that in the freedom to go where he thinks he can do the damage.

Dembele was excellent defensively next to someone like Wanyama or Dier (when good). But we couldn't play him as the dedicated DM next to a more creative, less defensively aware player like we could with Sandro, Wanyama or Dier.

I'm slightly concerned that we have a similar "problem" now if Bissouma isn't there. Sarr, Bentancur (and Hojbjerg to some extent) are all very good defensively next to a DM. Pressing, working hard, getting around the pitch. We're yet to see if any of them can be the one with that DM responsibility and do it well enough imo.

Skipp can be that player in some systems (imo), but not sure he's a great fit with the requirements of the system. I think we need the DM to be rather quick, not just get around the pitch and find the right positions, but get there quickly and be an excellent tackler.

We'll find out in January

I reckon if Ange had Dembele he’d play him in exactly the same way as he does Bissouma now. It’s just the way his system works, whereas Poch wanted 2 deep CM’s for protection.

If you added Maddison's shooting + vision in the final third to Dembele's skillset, you'd have an unstoppable player, potentially one of the best. Do we have done kind of genetic combining lab at the new stadium? If not it's a massive oversight, Levy out etc

What a class act he is.....his comments about rushing things and not calming down was spot on.

I love despite the fact Neville was churning the idea we ran out of ideas ifs more a case of use sticking to them but wanting to adapt
