Welcome Ange: To Dare is to Didgeridoo

Great interview. He comes across so well. The language helps of course, but he has the 'right' answer for everything and it sounds totally genuine, not scripted, not saying what people might want to hear for the sake of it. He is very sure of what he wants and confident in his methods, but there's a self-deprecating side to him as well. There is always something infectious about someone who loves their job, and that really comes across with Ange.
I thought it was interesting how he makes sure he is a visible presence every day, tries to greet everyone, but also keeps his distance and doesn't want to get too close or attached to anyone as he doesn't want that to influence his decision making. Given that the players all seem to be bought-in to what he wants to do, it seems to be working so far. But it is early days and it is quite a skill getting that balance right over a longer time span.
I already love the man!

He wasn’t quite as ‘last man standing’ as Nuno was but he certainly wasn’t first choice…. Let’s just be glad we seem to have got lucky here.
I think he was probably 2nd choice behind Slot to be honest. I reckon we felt out Naggelsmann but didn’t fancy him or his demands.

Rumours that we contacted Ange very early in the whole process but he wanted to wait until the end of the season, so he was clearly high on the list.

Other way round….

Alls well that ends well, dodged an absolute bullet there IMO.

I think people get overly wrapped up on this kind of stuff, peoples egos take abit of a hit at the idea that someones turned us down and vice versa, it happens, you move on
I’m glad we talked to Naggelsmann it would have been negligent not to. As it turned out after discussions he wasn’t the right fit. I think it’s pretty obvious we only offered 2 people the job this summer. I’d have been happy with either, don’t blame Slot for turning it down at all, he’d got his team in to CL and deserved the chance to manage them there.

I think you have to give Levy and his team credit where it’s due, he avoided the easy out and what the fans wanted and went with what was best for the club instead. The 2 managers he offered the job too were clearly of the same ilk. Unfortunately it’s still being painted as a last man standing appointment, but I don’t think that’s the way the club saw it all.

Slot clearly used the situation to suit him and fair play, I don't knock him for that, it happens. He said he wanted a move away on the Friday and by the Monday he signed a new deal. Spurs are not the only club in Europe so if he really wanted to leave he could have gone elsewhere if he was being honest. He didn't and stayed and got a bumper deal that maybe he felt he needed before that.

There was a german journalist on talksport talking about him taking the german job. His take was that naglesmann simply wanted a break before taking another job. Think he said the same himself.

Does he really say he “thought he was the last man standing” in Spurs selection process, as the written BBC article suggests? I can’t see the iplayer interview where I am but there’s no mention of it on the bbc website interview. I was under the impression he was contacted very early in the process by Spurs, but that he wouldn’t discuss it until Celtic’s season was done.
I just signed up for iplayer from Norway, using windscribe VPN (free). Worked like a charm! Just picked a random London postcode.

I know he's a Leicester man primarily, but can bever really tell how he feels about us these days, he seemed quite warm to us in that interview, but often joins any pile on regarding Spurs on social media.
I'd say he's clearly fond of Spurs but was a Leicester fan growing up. Compare the way he talks about Spurs to Everton or Barca and it's clear he's quite a fan of ours as well.

That would completely contradict what Levy has said at the Fan Forum and to Bloomberg though.

Julian Nagelsmann also fits the model Levy spoke about. He plays the same kind of football and in his short career he's leaned more towards being a project manager than not. The one time you could argue not was the Bayern job . I dont think it's fair to lump him into the same category as Mou and Conte.

Edit.
Reading back maybe I misunderstood what you meant? [emoji28]

No, I think you got what I was saying. I disagree - I think Nagelsmann is a “big name” which Levy said he wasn’t really interested in. He wanted the right fit. You could argue Nagelsmann is that but my point of view is that he would have another ‘doing us a favour’ type.

He's become a big name because of the Bayern Munich appointment, but I think the suitability issue is less about Mou and Conte being big names and more about the football they wanted to play and the players they would need to achieve this. If either were able to perform under our constraints Levy would have had no issue with their management. They needed ready made finished footballers to succeed, we rarely sign such players.

Our issue is we need project managers who want to build and who can maximise the potential of the not so well known players. Conte and Mou don't do that, Naglesman does hence he would have fitted our profile.

Now whether post Bayern who would require superstar signings remains to be seen but at Bayern he didn't really get them their either.

I think it is about ego. Mou and Conte felt like they were doing us a favour to come here for 2 years. So would Nagelsmann. He wants Cheatski, Bayern, huge ego, thinks he is the best and biggest and would be doing us a favour... whereas Ange is DELIGHTED to have made it to the Prem.
