Welcome Ange: To Dare is to Didgeridoo

How do you figure Frank won the tactical battle? In the second half we totally dominated the game just lacked the quality in the front 3

Yeh exactly, first game of season so bit mad to be calling winners of tactical battles. Especially when we dominated the second half. I would say in fairness to Ange, considering its his first game the fact we adapted and got better against an established shrewed manager plays in his favour.

I LOVE THIS GUY

“Football clubs move on pretty quickly,” said Postecoglou, having become the first Australian to manage in the Premier League. “I haven’t needed to address it. I haven’t needed to give them a warm fuzzy cuddle just to see how they are. We had a game to prepare for and they knew that. If it felt like we were distracted, or I was distracted, or anyone else, you would have seen evidence of it today. But we showed a real resilience. It’s going to be a challenging year.
“Harry Kane was a massive figure for this club for a long time and will continue to be whether he is in the building or not. We wanted to go out and give our supporters some hope and belief in the team.”

here’s the whole Grauniad piece:

HE NEEDS TO BE BACKED. NOT ONLY BY THE OWNERS, BUT THE FANS TOO.

COYS!!!!

That's how they play..defend deep and counter. They allowed us to dominate but we could not createv many chances. Perisic was able to get some crosses in but there were 6 to 8 defenders waiting all the time.

Agree that quality wasn't there ...maybe ange needs more time to embed tactical variation - perhaps a dribbler like Solomon or setting up son and kulu for shots outside goal.

I was hoping to see flying wingers and quick passing through the midfield like in pre season. But that's football. Nevertheless 1-1 is respectable, especially with a last minute makeshift backline.

A few weird decisions, and some inexperience - but also some good adaptability, which some feared he didn't have.

Weird decisions -

  • Starting Skipp in that advanced midfield role - he isn't the player for that, and it showed. Especially when you have Lo Celso on the bench. Weird choice, felt like Postecoglou rewarding Skipp for scoring against Barca.
  • Starting Son and Kulu as wingers - they just don't work there, and it surprised me. Kulu fine, because we have no other natural RW, but imo Sonny should have started through the middle and Solomon/Perisic out wide on the left.
  • Only making three subs - what was the point? Not like we have a lot of games this season, and the fresher legs of another two subs (Solomon, Lo Celso?) might have helped.

Inexperience was the muddle with the concussion sub form - just a rookie mistake.

But on a positive note, he seemed firm on a few key principles (play out from the back, look to play forward), and on the other hand, some of the things that blatantly weren't working (getting torn open down the flank on the counter multiple times), he tweaked at half-time. Royal and Udogie stayed noticeably deeper and wider after half time, which shut down those channels.

Mixed debut, but ultimately he'll learn from his errors and hopefully fix the selection.

So I think Skipp was rewarded for his game against Barca, players should be rewarded for performance/merit. Ultimately I think Skipp isn't a starter for this side.

Kulu always plays wide for us, Son I agree, I was hoping him and Maddison was switch more (which would put Son closer to goal), hard to tell as Son is still struggling as little bit.

Agree on the subs, my only view is he accepted the draw (Brentford lost their legs as well and were just hanging in there) and was giving the players the time for match fitness.

Not sure the concussion sub was on him, doubt the manager fills out a form, just unlike previous managers, Ange won't throw someone else under the bus.

I think the big thing for me, we tried to (and largely did) dominate a game of football away from home, we are a lot better to watch, we are a lot more organized than we used to be (even at this early stage) and despite the front three having a poor game (largely), we had 18 shots.

Just watched a video about his time in Australia, common themes, made tough decisions on squad early, loads of shocks, football took time to implement and often players looked awkward and made mistakes but with his backing and comments again and again about the players having belief and not being scared of making mistakes. I also loved the comment of believing that you can write your own story and nothing being for certain in the future. I think that is key with Spurs, far to much emphasis on the past good and bad.

First time I've watched it in full, great episode. It still amazes me that he got his break in the A-League due to Frank Farina being done for drunk driving, on the back of the infamous Craig Foster interview.

Seeing him talk about growing up watching the National Soccer League (a dreadfully flawed professional league - the last game I went to in 2004 had 200 people there), getting grief from kids at school for playing "wog ball"...it's just the experiences of so many who grew up preferring football to other sports in Australia.

That he is now the coach of Spurs is still just so surreal.

Article by Ange about that from 17 years ago...

"Only poofters and wogs play soccer" - I got the 'girl' thing a lot too at my famous-for-rugby high school. I'm Australian-born to Australian-born parents but it was still the same - less agro than migrants would have got I'm sure, but the other sports ruled and we knew it. Even teachers would remind me of it.

It's just so amazing how far Ange has got.

Love this part too:

Our Socceroos are a microcosm of our community. Unlike our "Aussies" on Ramsay Street, their names and faces are more indicative of the make-up of our suburbs and towns and an excellent endorsement to the rest of the world of what makes our country great.

Lol. I was coming to post this. Nice summary. Also shows for me that Skipp will be ineffective in the role where he played. Interestingly Dele Alli would have loved that role. That said, he is gone. In future look at Sarr or Ndombele (if willing to stay) or Bentacour (sp) in that position.

Bentancur will be excellent in that position, whoever plays there now is just keeping the shirt warm until his return IMO.

I like Skipp a lot and think he'll be the Bissouma rotation option.
Sarr will be in competition with Bentancur once he gets more experience and development under his belt.
I'm excited by how our midfield looks and the growth potential it has

Yeh Skipps decent, just looked stuck in a more negative mindset and like everyone its a new mentality to learn. Its game 1, I think its silly that anyone would be written off already
