Why wasn’t the incident right at the end of the game with Chiellini VAR’d for, at the very least, obstruction? He basically made a no arms rugby tackle in the area on Morata. Or does it depend on the profile of the club whether that gets reviewed? Had it been Godin on Ronaldo I think it’s given, but maybe I’m cynical?

It is a joke really, like I said before, I dont care if its the system or how it is used, it is not being used correctly.

So the clock ticks down when VAR is under review but then its not added back on? Bit of a shocker that.

Its pretty mad that this is still being tested in such elite comps
 
I listen to a fair few football podcasts, some foreign football and it seems to me that their views of VAR are moving from largely supportive to anti VAR. The typical issues are that it favours the big teams, the time it takes and the fact most contentious issues are largely subjective and VAR does not benefit them. The good does not outweigh the bad.

This is by no means conclusive proof nor meant to be but it is what I am hearing.

I know :), having been at several games where VAR has been used i am sick to death of being stood around not knowing what the fudge is happening. Its fine for the couch potatoes as they at least have some idea what is happening from the commentators.
 
I watched Barca vs Lyon yesterday, switched on just as Lyon's goal was being reviewed for offside. I took one look at the still picture and thought "too tight to call, give it". Five minutes later we had the goal. Why it should take so long for professional referees to call it, is beyond me. If it takes more than one minute to get the decision right, just let the referee's call on the field stand.

They also added just two minutes at the end of the game, but since Barcelona had a four goal lead, there was really no point in adding much more.

You should have a “decision pending” like in cricket, at least?
But they need to sort it, even for us potatoes.

They insist that offsides are objective (without having the technology to be so as yet) so have to keep looking as it has to be 100%

Why don't they? We had VAR in our fourth round tie against Rochdale 14 months ago; why not now? Is VAR reserved for certain teams and games? Are they perhaps aiming for the same level of inconsistency in which games have VAR as the quality of PL refereeing in general?

I think it can only be used at grounds that have the technical capacity to support it eg sufficent camera coverage, comms capability, large screens to inform those in the ground when VAR is being used etc. In practice that is mainly going to be PL clubs and some Championship ones.
I don’t know how it will work for promoted teams - will they get any help with the costs of making their grounds VAR- ready for next season (if they are not already so)?

Edit - just seen this discussed in the FA Cup thread. PL teams only it seems?

IMO, this is the sort of blatant mistake that VAR should be used to correct. From looking at one replay it's clear to everyone, even the most biased supporters of the team affected, that the decision was wrong. These types of errors are thankfully infrequent. My fear is that in the PL next season VAR will be used to scrutinise marginal incidents in a time consuming manner and result in final decisions that are still widely disputed.
