VAR: Sponsored by Chelsea

Loads of other countries have different interpretation on hand ball than the UK - they are a lot more strict on Ball to hand and pretty much disregard intent, its why Foreign defenders tend to defend with their hands behind their back. This is probably a decision "lost in translation" rather than incorrect.

* see also challenging with the keeper - most other counties are a lot more strict than the UK.

Its the interpretation of handball as per the laws applicable to the competition that matter, on Wednesday nights they are European Cup referees, the laws of their local leagues are no more relevant than the rules of cricket.

The local leagues all follow the same laws just interpretation is different... of course the English interpretation is correct?

Rarely, I can count on one hand the correctly awarded handballs I’ve seen in my lifetime.

It’s why we need VAR, human error isn’t acceptable in professional sport officiating. If it reduces incorrect decisions by just 0.1% it’s worth it.

Ironic

It's not worth it the negatives out weigh the gain of the few corrected decision

The same could be said about trips in the box, most penalties are for mistimed tackles rather than deliberate fouls, its going to take time before everyone is getting it right, anything has got to be better than the usual suspects getting their surfeit of dodgy decisions.

VAR seems to be giving the usual suspects more disputed penalties in the leagues that are using it, increasing the feeling of injustice.

True, there is a fundamental difference in the requirements for offence though, handball has to be a considered act, physical fouls are based solely on outcome.

Could it be argued that it’s headline use now is the CL, which is made up entirely of the usual suspects.

Yes it could, but if we are against barca I know who I would think is the usual suspect.

We’re an outlier in that refs have it in for us everywhere, we don’t even get referee favouritism in our own league.

If Barca were playing the dippers for example, the officials heads would be spinning.

It’s always perfection when an officiating mistake is made, we need VAR because all the refs are crap and more eyes and a second/third/fourth look will make for fewer errors.

If VAR wasn’t being developed there would still be outrage about these decisions and the anger would be greater if the authorities were burying their hands in the sand and ignoring it.

And now we have VAR and these decisions are still getting called wrong.
