It also wasn't lost on me how Iraola converted Kluivert into a massively effective number 10. Doesn't play the role anywhere near like we see from Madds but is extremely effective with his pace and skill. I wouldn't call him a schemer like we think we need, and Frank had with Damsgaard.

Kluivert had 12 goals and 6 assists in the PL. WhoScored has him as weak at passing, crossing and defensive contribution. He is good at dribbling and finishing according to them.

It's cases like these that makes you wonder whether there is another way under Frank. Are we looking in the right place as we transition to a system more resembling a 4-2-3-1.

If nobody is suitable could see palhinha, bergvall and bentancur in the middle. Sarr swapping to keep things fresh. Think we'd still need another anyway though.

Simon’s is a lot of money
Very good young players but already had a few big injuries IIRC
McAtee is a real transitional player who keeps the ball moving … I like him but worry would he get in a fully fit team
Elliot is an x factor guy for me and will shine wherever he goes next as a player
Eze would be perfect but I don’t get why we haven’t moved (unless all the travelling has been an issue )

Any one of those please. We need to improve the midfield, then get a decent striker.

We have spent in the attacking areas no doubt. Parking kudus as he’s new . I have concerns about where our goals are coming from. Tel and Odebert are young but not seen anything to suggest they are going to chip in significantly.

Richy is not good enough. Solanke works his socks off for the team but I’d be shocked if he gets close to 20.

Losing Maddison and Kulu injury issues leaves us in my view short in that area of creativity as well. Bit of a concern.

The attacking unit is going to need to be clinical as I don’t see us creating loads of chances every game.

Think we might score a fair bit from set pieces but generally agree.

I think Eze's age might be a big factor. Going that big a fee for someone with maybe 4 seasons left at the top. No resale value. MGW being 2 years younger perhaps made a difference?

I think any of Khannouss, Elliot or McAtee would be good options.

Simmons i think is probably a bit lightweight and might be best as a winger in the EPL. His injury seems to have taken his fizz out of him a bit

Good points. I also wonder if the amount of football someone has played is part of it too. We got burned by Richarlison who had very good appearance numbers before he came here, but has struggled with injuries here.

Eze has played quite a lot of football in the Championship and PL - two very physical and demanding leagues.

Not saying we should never sign players who have played that much, but could be a factor?

On the hard working side we've seen with Kane too how although a stunningly brilliant player his body could no longer put in as much work at that kind of age after quite a few years of football at this level.

I think we all want that, but don’t think we need to hold it against a 4th choice CB who’s played most of his career with us on the wrong side in injury ravaged, knackered team. I’m saying he’s good enough for what we want in that squad position / hierarchy and the ball skills issue is being well over exaggerated anyway.

I agree Davies lack of pace restricts his attacking ability but he is second only to Romero in his forward passing, it has been less effective with the lack of movement in front of him.

Maybe Frank is not a fan????? There is no other logical reason beyond quiet negotiations of which there are no signs. Can Elliot pass/create as a 10? Can he pick up deep and playmake? Is McAtee the young answer and can we trust him? It is a shame Simmons is so far down the road with the Chelsea deal as that would be a great hijack. Pacqueta seems gettable if we're convinced? Have to say @Gutter Boy 's suggestion of Khannouss is decent IMO, he's gettable, knows the league and is a Frank-type player.

He's only just starting. African young player of the year. EPL experienced. And who Palace have earmarked to replace Eze when he goes to Arsenal, and they have very good pedigree on recruitment like this.

Yeah, I guess I'm saying that an alternative way is to use guys like Kudus, Odobert, Tel, Johnson etc in the 3 of the 4-2-3-1, but one of them playing in more central areas. You get that narrow pace on the inside and you get the full-backs offering the width. So ahead of the double pivot you get 5 guys in both attack and on the high press. I think Odobert did that with France U21s in the summer.

It's perhaps not like having a prime Eriksen but it is another way of playing that Iraola seems to have adopted.

I think Odobert and Kudus are both suited to occasionally playing a quasi-10 role. I don't think Tel and Johnson are - they are both too inherently direct (which is a quality in itself).

But we should get another creative player through the door. We are lacking without those 3 in the side. They were responsible for creating most of our goals last season.

I think we are lacking a pass centric creator. Kudus and Odobert's play relies more on them beating a player with the dribble rather than via passing through the lines. Sometimes you want your creator to have that overhead view of the game because the very best at it are the guys who can see and feel where the gaps are.
