Transfer thread

As much stick as our recruitment is getting on here by many right now, I still think in a couple of years we will be praising the signings of the likes of Vuskovic, Gray, Bergvall, Simons, Tel and Odobert after they've had a good amount of time and games of PL football. Of course needs to be supplemented with some ready now players, but I think whoever is manager in a couple of years the outlook will look a lot better....
We might not be in the PL by then given our current trajectory.

I know we'll get criticism from some quarters for a signing like Souza considering our predicament right now but I still think it is the right path to go down. We don't have the funds to sign best, ready made players now and even if we did we don't have the gravitas to attract them to the club.

We need to double down and continue down this road of signing great young players but make sure that we have better pathways for them to fulfill their potential, either via better relationships with other clubs for loans or, better still, getting ourselves a feeder club in a weaker european league.

I think we also need to be smarter with bringing in some experienced players to help the youngsters. Players like Xhaka and Henderson have been invaluable this season for Sunderland and Brentford. I haven't really had much thought who there is that could play that sort of role at Spurs but as we're struggling at left back and seemingly bringing in one for the future I wonder whether Liverpool would be prepared to sell Andy Robertson for a not particularly massive fee?

No issue with Souza, especially as Udogie will be back soon enough and Spence, Davies and VDV can cover.

My issue is

- Why does it take us 10 fudging days to sign a 15M player from Brazil? what the fudge were doing in December prepping for this window?
- Where is the players to help Frank now, again I want the guy gone, but if the club won't pull the trigger, give the guy a bone, something.
- Re experience, again someone like Neves or Lookman is a buyable shout.

If Frank loses the next 3 games, he's fudging gone, then what, you bring in a player on Jan 31st?

If we are smart

- We need to either play Tel or loan him
- Vuscovic would be well served by one more season in Germany
- I'd like to see a fasttrack plan for Williams-Barnett
- We need to make calls on Moore, Scarlett, etc.

Nothing wrong with the strategy but we have to have a focused pla to develop these players in squad or on loan, plus give them an environment to play winning football in. Bergvall would look like a monster in one of the top 3 teams surrounded by a team playing functionally and with confidence.

You're using some weird decontextualized model of probability to determine an outcome which is absolutely unprovable. That stat does not make you any more right than someone who thinks he'd have been useful off the bench. The truth is our manager did not want to work with him (or try to develop him further) and that was his decision (please note, I am not claiming he was Arjen Robben calibre OK?).
I agree and I think that's the kind of the point. Saying Johnson might have scored is a pointless comment when the manager didn't rate him, didn't really play him and didn't even play in a manner that created the type of chances Johnson was good at finishing.

Which IMO, considering he is a coach who was reported to be really good at both developing players and using his squad, is a criminal waste.

Re. the Johnson sale Frank himself said that in hindsight we wouldn’t have sold him. Which says it all.

There is no doubt Frank would have used him and he’d have added some stability as a settled senior player.

On the flip side Kudus will be back and I’m sure the club had another senior signing planned. Whether the player at City who got injured or another, ultimately we are trying to upgrade our squad.

The smart way to act would have been to keep Palave waiting unless they increased their bid, until we were ready with a senior signing. Levy would have done this better. But I also get that selling and upgrading the squad even if not realising the best price, is what we need to do. But don’t weaken us when the replacement isn’t done. Keep Palace waiting until we’re ready.

Is it perhaps like the end of our season? Players just jump on planes and head away on holiday. It's only when they return do they start working on deals.

It does feel like Souza could have been announced on the 1st Jan though.

I just hope that we do have some major irons in the fire. It doesn't feel like it.

I don't think anyone will be developing Johnson beyond playing your team/ tactics in a way that suits him. Ange signed him as his profile fitted his system...a wide man that doesn't cut in (pretty rare these days), and had some success in that role.

If Frank is not going to be playing a system requiring similar, then he doesn't require Johnson.
I don't think a manager is going to develop Johnson into something else.

(With a slight caveat that I was intrigued by the thought of him being a go ahead finisher in a strike force pairing)

This is what we are mate.

We have very rarely ever bought players promptly in a transfer window.

Bergvall wouldn't start for any of the top 3 teams. He might get the odd minute here or there though.

We have to accept that just because you've been good at developing players in the past it doesn't mean you think every player has the potential. He's evaluated what he's seen from Johnson and doesn't believe that he can get more from him. I don't disagree honestly.

He's as good as a lot of the "wonderkids" the top 3 have played in the last 5 years, not that I disagree with the "would he start" statement.

All of these players are more what will they be at 25, a few years ago I made a list of the top young players that English media was fawning over at City/Chelsea/United/Scum/etc and made the comment that none of them were what Dele was at 20 and we know how that ended, and made the comment most would be mid tier PL in 3-5 years, too lazy to dig it up, but point still stands.

We would have said that about Sarr & Udogie and they have not really kicked on. Udogie more due to injury. But the reality is maybe half of them will work out.
