Yet our advancement - to a point where we're now accused by some of coming up short (of winning the League!) - was not exactly founded on heavy investment. So I think we can be forgiven for some measure of belief that the next step up could also be done in the same way.Why does it have to be one or the other? He never said we had to go spending £100s of millions did he? He says we have come up short so far so need to invest - hardly an outrageous thing to suggest....
Everton bid £45m for Gylfi Sigurdsson
Wow!
Thats the whole point - Our advancement has been fantastic, but the hardest thing to do in football is actually win things. Plenty of teams overachieve, and in years to come this team/era wont be remebered by anyone except Spurs fans if they havent won anything. We've came close to a league title but fallen short twice hence why he's suggesting investment. Imagine investing in a Bale, Sanchez etc Just one big buy really would elevate us. If you want to believe that we will win things just investing in young players then fine because I love that ideology too but the likelihood is with the big boys season after season getting the best players in Europe this isnt going to work. Compete yes, but actually win titles? Doubtful. He acknowledged we have a top squad but said we need to invest to keep moving forward, and thats a notion that many believe to be correct. Labelling Spurs as being 'smug' was stupid, but the content of the majority of the article is of fair opinion....Yet our advancement - to a point where we're now accused by some of coming up short (of winning the League!) - was not exactly founded on heavy investment. It is the sour grape tainted accusation of smugness which stains the writing that follows. It's not as though anyone at Tottenham has been claiming a better way of doing things, just a different one.

how many players better than what we have for the starting XI do you think are out there
how many players better than what we have for the starting XI do you think are out there and how many would we be able to afford in either transfer fee and wages? and of those, how much of a certainty do you think they are to improve our first XI?
in all honesty i don't see any sure things which are realistic buys for us at this moment in time - any forwards better than Kane? any AMs better than Alli or Eriksen? central midfielders better than Wanyama or Dembele? maybe etc etc
we have a great starting XI which i don't think we can realistically improve on and given the chance most of the top teams in the world would take each of those players off of us at record transfer fees - we can improve the squad, no question and it's something we should be doing but there is no need to be throwing money around trying to improve a starting XI which is already one of the best in the game
I've read the article a different way to you, I don't see him sneering at or dismissing Poch at all. He clearly stated he doesn't want to see Spurs starting XI broken up or the pathway for young players blocked. He looks at Barkley as cover for Eriksen, looks at better cover for Kane. These are valid points that are constantly mentioned on this very forum. The smug reference has let him down as Spurs fans are obviously going to be negative towards him after that, and ignore the valid points in his article....But the falling short has only happened in the two most recent seasons. Prior to which we were even further back. We have maintained an upward trajectory thus far so I feel we're entitled to one or two years of thinking we can continue with the same approach that has seen us sustainably improve. If we had stagnated, I would totally agree that large investment is almost the only way. Indeed, I don't argue that investment may well lead to more success anyway. But I think Poch has earned the right now to not be sneered at or dismissed by some media figure because he thinks that he hasn't yet reached the zenith under his apparently preferred approach but can in fact deliver more success his way.
I used a game changer as an example but keeping it specific to the Martin Samuel thing he said we have a fantastic first XI and just need some better options/cover which is what most say on here. Some should really re read the article and ignore the smug comment because that aside he makes some good points. Chelsea have won the league and aren't resting on their laurels, why should we?how many players better than what we have for the starting XI do you think are out there and how many would we be able to afford in either transfer fee and wages? and of those, how much of a certainty do you think they are to improve our first XI?

You might not think Chelsea re doing good business, but the point is you can't afford to stand still. Manchester clubs have strengthened, Arsenal and Liverpool. We need to at the very least improve the quality of some of our back up options, which was pretty much the point Samuel was making....Chelsea have sold or will sell a chunk of that team and replace them like for like
I think so far they have done some awful business.
Morata is very very different to Costa which will change their game. The lad from Monaco is replacing Matic and the lad they sold to Watford!!!
Rudiger is replacing Terry
This may be the season they use some of the kids they have no choice
And for us Son was a game changer when he came on a bit
As too was Jansenn away at Swansea and Sissoko did some things well as as sub occasionally
Agree, although would like to see a bit more of N'Koudou before deciding we need an upgrade....i haven't read the article, i was responding to your game changer comment - i agree with the idea we could and should improve the squad.
RB to replace Walkers skill set.
either a CB or a DM (or both even) - our current DM cover is our starting CB, and his cover at CB is an untested 18 year old, if Wanyama gets injured we are then looking at Dier moving to CM and then CCV coming in at CB - or a formation change, which for me would be a pretty poor situation to be in for an extended period of time.
Sissoko/N'koudou upgrade - not necessarily like for like but another option in the AM positions who would have a more positive impact than either of those two.
however we are in a good position in that we aren't desperate for any of the above and so can take our time
