Transfer Rumour Thread

He'd be good backup for Rafa.

Yes, but he's just come off a long injury, and needs a lot of games to get up to his best. His career would possibly be damaged while sitting on the bench waiting for Rafa to get injured or eventually leave.

Because he has not proven himself season in season out. I'm quite frankly sick and tired of someone scoring a goal and all of a sudden are good enough to play for us or good enough for an England call up. The same people were calling for Elmander to join Spurs, he went to Gala on a free. He also had a good goal scoring bit of form and is utter pish. Who's to say he is not playing for a contract as he is on loan ? Lots of players do it. The contract comes and they spend a lot of time on the bench.

Let's say hypothetically we were to buy him. We have Bale, Modric, Parker and Lennon across the middle, who do you drop ?

But that's the point I'm making. He HAS proven himself, first at Reading, then at Hoffenheim and now at Swansea. If he was playing for a contract, he'd be like 99% of footballers wouldn't he...at least according to our own BAE? But I know for a fact he's not. He's an extremely hard worker who wants to play amongst the best, not sit with them on the bench. Now I get it that you want him to make it in the Premiership for a year or two before we look at him, but I think we'll be too late by then.

He'd replace none of the above IMO. I see him as an ideal backup/eventual replacement for VdV who's been extremely injury prone during his spell wit us. With Sigurdsson here, we wouldn't have to alter the system, he'd simply step in. Plus he can cover on either flank, as he's not afraid to take on his man and is a deadly crosser.

I also think we should be looking at players just below the great level but who can make the step up in the next couple of years. For one i am not convinced we can afford the world beaters and secondly im not sure that level of player would come and before anyone mentions hazard it is worth remembering he has not done it outside the french league yet.

One such player we should look at is the swedish lad in holland called elm, very good player.

I respectfully disagree. Of course I'm biased up to a certain degree, but the fact remains he was a superior player at Reading, good for Hoffenheim(before their new coach ruined the team) and has been superb for Swansea. Yes he's having a good run of form, but it's not like this is the first thing he's done in the world of football. He's done great everywhere he's been and is now proving he's ready for the Premier League. How can you say it's temporary?

If we wait to watch him do this over the next few seasons, he'll be at United or Inter and laughing in our faces when we show him interest. The point is to buy players before their price tag goes sky high isn't it? Here is a guy who's 22, has all the signs of a wonderful player and is on fire in the Premiership. What's not to like?

Exactly right mate get them before they take off.

I've seen some good sporting careers resume after ACL tears. But it tends to lean toward those who suffer them at a younger age. Hopefully that's all Rossi has suffered.

Complete breaks are a different story. After snapping mine, a learned friend told me after my first assessment 'Basically, you're fcuked.' He was right. Years on, still hurts every day. No more running or impact sports.

Not if we're going to spend ?ú10m and the rating of his ability is based on the last three decent weeks and "he was quite good at Reading".

2009/2010 - 21 goals in 44 matches for Reading in all competitions(Including an equaliser from the spot, against Liverpool in extra time in the F.A. Cup that got Reading into overtime, where they won.) Was voted player of the year by the fans.
2010/2011 - 10 goals and 2 assists in only 13 starts for Hoffenheim. Voted player of the year by the fans.
2011/2012 - 5 goals and 2 assists in 9 games for Swansea.

But I respect your argument, just like Wriggly's. Only my point is, if we continuously wait for players to prove themselves for some time at the highest level, they end up costing a lot(usually too much) and we'll have the big dogs pushing us away from the table. 10 million pounds for an attacking midfielder who could well score 10+ goals a season and have a number of assists, with brilliants set-pieces and only 22 years old. You tell me?

I never even realised that gylfi had gone to Swansea, quality player and I cannot believe Hoffenheim let him go for so cheap. He will turn out to be a bargain. This is the type of player we should be looking to get. Like how we were under Jol, young unproven players with high potential.

He had a falling out with the coach which is why they let him go cheap.

I see Hoilett scored another goal last night in the Premier League and made 2 decent touch-line dribbles - surely by now this is proof beyond all reasonable doubt he should be signed for THFC in order to become the next David Bentley and a vessel for general fans' outpuring of hate and disappointment.

Alternatively we can go for the guy who was 'quite good at Reading' and now has managed to score a few goals against bottom 5 random cloggers giving solid indication of his ascend towards Frank Lampard's level of ability based on nothing more other than their general location on the field

Or we can really punch out of the box here and buy someone who actually improves the first 11 as opposed to the Next Gen squad and seek to raise the overall squad quality for next season. That's a crazy idea, granted and one which may take time to fully comprehend but I'm of the opinion we should be aiming to buy one player of very high quality instead of 3 brick ones who would most likely cost more in wages overall and take up 3 spots out of the 25. We went to great trouble to rid the squad of Jenas, Hutton, Palacios, Crouch, Bentley (almost), Bassong, Corluka, Pienaar and now we seem desperate to fill it up again with the exact same level of players. Bizzare logic at the very least

Crazy idea as you say given our recent transfer dealings. Maybe Levy is saving up for the Big One but I'm not holding my breath!

Jason Roberts and Sylvin Distin are probably our next "surprise" signings.

Distin is nailed on - old skool Pompey mate. Triffic player

This marquee signing has been coming on for longer than Morientes' medical but if we fail to make use of what would now be our 6th transfer window in a row since CL qualification - then some major questions need to be asked at all levels

- management and their overall ability/inellectual capacity to identify 'required' players

- active scouting and preparation of comprehensive reports on possible targets

- general handling of agents (we pay some of the highest fees on these cnuts, almost as much as bricky)

- chariman - manager relationship

- use and understanding of informed decisions when dealing with potential targets instead of watching 'Premier League - The 2008-11 years' DVD in the Wayne Rover

- short/medium term club goals
