Transfer Rumour Discussion Thread

I actually think Barry is underrated by many fans who aren't City fans. When he plays you wonder what the fuss is about, when he doesn't, you realise.

He's the player that rarely puts a foot wrong, but keeps things ticking over. Sure, we could just have that in Parker if he is instructed to play defensive midfield and not roam, or even Sandro. So it doesn't really make sense.

I agree, he's a decent player. He's 32 though, and would probably be asking for very solid wages. Replacing Parker with Barry is probably an upgrade short term, but it's a very short term solution and he's unlikely to be first choice. Doesn't make any sense to me.

and I completely agree. Especially when it's a position not exactly needed and the £4,000,000 as well as wages could be better of spent elsewhere.

I'd happily have him main reason Parker was absolutely woeful end of last season.

Do you think he would be anything other than a backup/squad player? Why should we commit that kind of money on a 32 year old squad player?

Surely there must be better options out there, players that can be good this season, but with the potential to develop into even better players.

Out of those listed I can only see Townsend and Friedel DEFINITELY staying.

You'd think Defoe, Huddlestone, Falque, Khumalo and Gomes would all be off. Adebayor is a tricky one, I think we should get rid but on his day he's really good and who else is going to pay a lot for him, maybe a club in Russia or something. A sensible bid for Parker and I think he'll be gone.

Back up player. Which this season proved you need to rely on them. Last season we relied on Parker to back us up. He was not very good. Teams don't win stuff squads do.

But spending considerable amounts of money on an older backup player means less money available for signing first team players, fewer opportunities for younger players to get game time and develop and a place in the squad taken up by a player without any potential to improve into a first choice players.

I would much rather see us spend that money on a younger player that might only be a backup player now, but with the potential to develop into a first choice player a couple of years down the line.

There's a real chance that signing Barry would put us in the exact same situation we've been in this season with Parker a year down the line. That was a risk worth taking with Parker (perhaps) as we needed a first choice player in that position and some experience in our midfield. It's not a risk worth taking just to secure a backup player imo.

Squads win stuff, but the important point about a squad is not only to have first choice players and backups, but several viable first team options. Competition for places, not just clearly inferior backup players to fill in and "do a job" when a first choice player is injured.

I'm guessing we wouldn't get away with paying Barry much less than £70-80k p/w. Taking £70k p/w that's £7.2m over two years in addition to the reported £4m fee (assuming that's somewhat realistic). If we can find a younger player willing to accept £30k p/w that's 3.1m over two years, effectively freeing up another £4m for the transfer fee.

I think you can find some pretty good young central midfield prospects around Europe in the £8m bracket.

Or, like most rumours, we aren't interested at all and someone's just using our club's name for other purposes.

Like you I can't see us selling Townsend at this point. I think Friedel could be allowed to leave though, if he wants first team football and a team puts in a decent bid. Backup goalkeepers aren't that hard to find I think so we would be able to sort it out.

Ade and Defoe will probably depend on who we can bring in and what kind of bids we get for them more than anything.

From that list, the only player I would mind leaving is Adebayor. He's got more to give and will perform better. He'll always be streaky, but you'll often see a player who's been out of a team or form, come back with a great season. But the wages he is on, would understand if he was sold. When ticking he's a great player. Better to have a great player 50% of the time, and learn when to play him, than an average one all of the time. But its a luxury we can't afford I guess.

I await your castigation... :)

Don't worry, we wont castrate you.

I agree about Ade. His transfer was drawn out. Then he was away for the ACN and that caused him a lot of stress resulting in mental and physical problems IMO.

He was our top scorer 2011-12 and has come back to that sort of form in the last part of the season. I really can't see an upgrade on him for less than £15 million.
But if AVB wants him out I will back him.

Of the others I would be unconcerned by any leaving and I could see Hudd doing a great job at Fulham. I like Brad and think he is a great bench player.

Edit: Actually, I think I would rather that Hudd stays.

BREAKING - #Paulinho closing on #THFC deal according to Gianluca Di Marzio who was the 1st to predict Pep to Bayern and Seedorf to Botafogo.

I like him from the sounds of his Wiki (assuming I have the right Paulinho)...

José Paulo Bezerra Maciel Júnior, commonly known as Paulinho translated Little Paulo, (born 25 July, 1988 in São Paulo) is a Brazilian footballer who currently plays as a midfielder forCorinthians. He is well known for his extreme levels of mental toughness and also his aerial prowess.

Paulinho is a box-to-box midfielder who "is a strong and powerful runner, pushing his side forward from midfield to supplement his fine defensive work. Paulinho also offers a useful presence in set piece situations at both ends of the pitch."

Box-to-box midfielders are the new RBs?

THIS. This is the guy I really want. I heard Brazil Football expert Tim Vickery talk about him, and he compared him to Lampard. I've done some YouTube watching (I know) and saw him play against England. Looks like he could be a TOP player who could finally solve our problem with goals coming from midfield.

Vickery said he loves to start moves deeper and is capable of crashing into the box and scoring goals on late runs. I am no scout and don't pretend to be, but Tim Vickery is rarely wrong about players and from the other stuff I've seen/read, this could be a great signing.

Then our midfield 3 (if we play that) will consist of players that like to do the same thing.

Perhaps Dembele may be played in an advanced role?

So are we going to have a triple samba press conference? :D
