Transfer Rumour Discussion Thread

Think we might go in for Soldado now, seeing as Valencia failed to qualify for Champs League. Finished with 24 goals for the season.

He signed a new contract last year, up until 2017.

I don't think he'll move to a different non-CL team.

I think we're going for Leandro, and he and Soldado are too similar to go for both. Ever Banega is the Valencia player we should be after IMO.

Though Negredo might be cheaper and younger (albeit by 4 or so months). He finished the season with 25 goals.

Mehgredo isn't in the same calibre as Soldado.

But is he better than what we currently have? ;)

If he went to Chelsea I would be seriously worried.. He could be the final piece in there line up. Mourinho would only have to sit back and watch that squad tear up everyone.

Does anyone know if Modders has said any positive or negative things about Jose in interviews since he's been there?

What I don't understand is...Modric has been at RM a year. So did he go to be at RM or because of Mourinho? Why would he quit after one season?

I'm hoping it's
A) Just because it was Real Madrid... but he hasn't settled and wants to return to England

and not
B) because it was Real Madrid AND Mourinho and he has a great relationship with Mourinho and knows following him to Chelsea (where he was prepared to go before) he could be the main man in CM with a hundred attacking midfielders in front of him to play with.

Anyway probably not true

I really hope Levy worked some clauses into the Modric deal. First refusal, massive sell on fee if he's sold to another club in England, fudge off you ****s don't sell him to Chelsea clause etc.

Seems completely unrealistic to think that he will return to us. Would make me ridiculously happy if it happened though...

A sell-on clause, maybe, but it seems unlikely Levy would be able to insert any stipulation barring them from selling to Chelsea. I had formed the impression there were one or two rather shadowy characters in the background with an interest in Modrić who have wanted him shipped there all along. I would be absolutely astonished if he were to come back here after the way Levy denied him that move in the first place.

I agree, the last clause was more of a joke ;)

I also agree that him returning seems unlikely, first there's the Modric-Levy situation and then there's the other clubs that would certainly be interested if he became available.

my view is that having a play maker/deep creative midfielder would do more to improve our team than merely swapping Adebayor for a new striker.

obviously i hope we sign players for both positions - i just think that swapping forwards (and nothing else) would be kind of papering over the cracks of the what i consider to be a bigger problem (lack of creativity)

edit - was being a little OTT saying id be happy with only Modric as a signing tbf - i do think that that one transfer would do more for the team than the rest of our potential deals combined though.

I agree with this. Having someone like Modric back in the midfield who can orchestrate our attacking play would probably turn Ade more into the 11-12 version. I can't stress enough how bad our transitions were this season at times, it's great to keep possession but using it in the right way is so important we just looked clueless at times and by the numbers which is why we struggled to score goals outside of Bale driving us to victory.

I've said for a very long time that the 'Modric type' player is vastly overrated, well in this league anyway. It is not a necessity to have this sort of player in a league that suits direct and powerful play over flair (not to say it's not important because it is). You can easily manouver around not having this sort of player at your disposal far easier than not having a good striker. Last season we didn't have a Modric type player and played far more direct but we looked more effective and dangerous than we've ever looked. We wasn't nowhere near as pleasing on the eye than in previous seasons but in terms of effectiveness? we looked damn good.

To sum it up, i think a quality striker is far far far more important than any other position.
