Re: Northumberland Development Project

If we were in the North, Modric would not have signed, neither would have Berbatov, infact many of the players wouldn't have, our extra income over the likes of Northern teams is because despite our non success over the years we are still next in the food chain. You only have to see Liverpools pull in this respect.. loads of success in the 70s and 80s and there fanbase is built on this around the world. Evertons does not have the infrastructure of Liverpool so has to buy and sell well and I'd suggest they have done just as well as we have in that respect bar the ridiculous amount for Bale.

We earned our reputation from being the sugar daddy club in the 60s. That is how our club grew, from then to the 90s. It is since and because of bigger sugar daddies why we are not champions League. Our standing in the game has never changed.. despite Iving Scholar's running before walking demise and Alan Sugar best efforts to put as little money he could into the club but was still able to spend millions on players. As I said its not rocket science running a football club like Tottenham when a lot of the infrastructure is laid on a silver platter. More so in todays game.

You're using a hypothetical alternate reality to decry things that actually are true and have happened.
It's not just arguing from a position of weakness but of non-existence.

Re: Northumberland Development Project

Have we been performing above our financial station recently? It seems to me that we have been about where we should be since 2005-06, but were badly under-performing before.

We have been a Deloitte top twenty club since its inception (one of only eight or nine ever presents) and usually the fifth or sixth richest in England (except the first one where we were marginally above Arsenal and Chelsea, irrc). So based on revenues 5-6th is about where we should be. The fourth placed seasons were over achievement but there were also bad seasons.

We get a slightly different analysis based on wages and then we have over performed by a couple of places. A number of clubs including Villa, West Ham and Portsmouth have out spent us on wages. While clearly they were doing so in an unsustainable way and gained an unfair advantage, but it was partly our choice to keep wages down and spend more on transfers. In recent seasons we have reversed strategy and paid more wages and kept net transfer spending down.

Re: Northumberland Development Project

The financial disparities between the top half clubs is a considerably bigger than in the bottom half. The fact that the points gap isn't larger is a credit to the likes of us and Everton.

Re: Northumberland Development Project

In recent years we've punched above our financial weight but prior to that we didn't fare so well.

Re: Northumberland Development Project

Cheers.

Proof that I wasn't talking out of my **** (about both Charlton and Liverpool)!

Did I say average , I ment to say they got big crowds alongside other teams around that time and that was not a reason why people went to watch good football, people went because it was he done thing on a Saturday at 3pm. Charlton as I said were getting big crowds. upwards of 75,000. Big crowds does not necessarily mean they were watching good football. Apologies for my wording above.

Re: Northumberland Development Project

Fair point. But I still think if Everton or Saudi Sportswashing Machine were in London and Tottenham played North they would have been playing for them and not us. Wasn't Saudi Sportswashing Machine interested in Modric at the time, but he turned them down. Didn't Modric even visit Saudi Sportswashing Machine and there training ground. Obviously didn't like it.

Nonsense. Charlton didn't have the biggest crowds. Tottenham, on the other hand, often did.

Charlton had one huge terrace along the side of the pitch (where the stand to the right of the away fans now is). And they occasionally got big crowds. But they never had the biggest crowds on average.

Apologies you read me wrong, I didn't say anything about Liverpool having huge attendances. I was pointing out there dominance following us and the blah blah was the dominance in football since as everyones knows that. It followed Tottenham having the better players in the early 60s followed by Liverpool having the dominance from then.

Re: Northumberland Development Project

It's notable in the 50s and 60s (and earlier) how the attendances followed the success. Us in the early 50s and early 60s. United in the mid/late 60s, Arsenal in the 30s. Even Chelsea topped the attendance list in the mid 50s when they had a title winning team.

That changed in the 70s with Liverpool and United dominating (with and without success, respectively).

Apologies this is veering way off topic!

However it's interesting to note that occasionally a surge in attendances would arrive prior to success. This appears to have happened with us in the immediate post-war years ahead of the triumphs that were to follow at the turn of the decade. Admittedly attendances were increasing significantly all over the country in the years immediately following WW2, but ours jumped even more dramatically than most, and this despite our continuing relative mediocrity in Division 2.

Re: Northumberland Development Project

Surely that reflects the good football that builds to success. Rowe had the team playing attractive football which led to promotion and a title. That 48k was followed by 54k, the top attendance in 1949-50 (by 5k) and while we were still in the second division. There had to be something special to draw in the big crowds.

Likewise, the early 60s team was dominant the season before but had a slack finish to the season.

Not a sausage.

The longer the silence the more you think its not going to happen. Cant remember when the last detailed update from the club was re the stadium...

February 2012, when it was approved.

There hasn't even been a rumour since early October when it was reported that the club was looking into the idea of a stadium share with a new London based NFL franchise.

Was the update regarding the Greek family that currently live on the future centre circle not wanting to sell up not detailed enough for ya 8-[

This thread has been pretty depressing for a long time huh..

Er ... Arthur Rowe did not take over until the start of the following season. Joe Hulme "became manager in October 1945. However, he did not have any success and he resigned from the post in May 1949."

or we could just ask the club for an update....

Brick-wall-of-answers.jpg

:D

The THST did recently, if I'm not mistaken. Got almost nothing out of the club beyond the stock statements they always use.

I can't believe the last official updates on this great white hope were two whole years ago.

Best to lock this thread and move on, I think. :(
