Toby Alderweireld

29 but who's counting.

Potentially a big loss if his hammy is torn. However the silver lining of this cloud is that no major club is going to be determined to buy him if he's getting injured every season. Hope he stays with us for the rest of his career.

Actually for the first time since he joined I'm not that concerned. A back 3 of Dier, Davinson, and Verts works just fine by me.

That being said, get well soon, lad!

As Toby forged his way through into the penalty area I was shouting at him to pass the ball.
If only he had! Those were a nervous few minutes when it was clear he wasn't coming back on and that Dier had to drop back.
Then it was all forgotten. A seamless transition.
It does give confidence that maybe we won't feel the effect of Toby's absence quite as much this year as we did last.
But it does mean we lose Dier in midfield (assuming we are playing a back 3) and that we lose one option in our fluid in-game formation changes.
Come back soon, Toby.

That’s why we brought Sanchez

We're still a man short though. We have 5 senior players (Toby, JV, Sanchez, Wanyama and Dier) for 4 positions (3 CBs and DM), which for me isnt enough. Granted you dont need a defensive DM (if you see what I mean) and can play someone like Winks or Dembele there who achieve some of the same result differently, or you can go to 4 at the back, but I think we need another senior CB (by senior I mean first-team-ready), or be very confident about Foyth's speed of development

Winks played the deepest midfield role in our draw away to Real, at our 4-1 win against Liverpool and for the decisive part of our win against Real yesterday.

To not outright count him as a player for that position/role makes little sense to me. What does he have to do to be counted there?

Honestly I could see him start ahead of Wanyama in that deeper role in the not too distant future.

I would be surprised if we're not confident about Foyth developing quickly.

Winks for me is a first 11 started now

Tony got injured the same time last year and we were playing 2 at the back. We can still play 3 now with Sanchez and cover Dier with winks and dembele

We have addressed a weakness IMO and upgraded te team

Massive loss if he is out a while. There is always something that has to put a slight tarnish on what was a great night.

Hopefully the timing will help.

Palace at home then 2 weekends till Arsenal - we need him back for this.

As for his contract, come on.... stop fudging about

We've been thriving without Rose, Wanyama, Dembele and Lamela all season. We just hammered Real Madrid with Sissoko and Trippier in the side. Verts-Sanchez-Dier is still the best defence in the league. We've got this.
That might be true, but adding a couple more injuries and any team will struggle. We haevnt hit a particularly busy period yet, coming up to winter is when things begin to get tough. Also don't get why you refernce Trippier as if hes some sort of weak link.....

And fingers crossed it will be a straight forward recovery (should be with a hammy) unlike last season.

Davies could play LCB and Jan into the Centre CB roll if need be as we have a returning Rose who maybe up to speed in a couple more weeks.

But Rose and Dembele are now back, and Lamela and Wanyama are very close. So it's not cumulative getting new ones now.

And Trippier is a weak link defensively. We saw earlier in the season how he could be targeted and exposed. If Bale was fit, I bet Aurier would have played last night.

I think we have had quite a few injuries to deal with already, and done well. Rose,Moose and probably Lamela are all becoming available and Toby wont be long term (famous last words:))

As for games......we have qualified with two games to spare in the CL and the Caraboo cup is no longer an issue so its looking easier than other years.

I just cant agree with anyone who says this. You can 'target' any player you want, doesn't mean you get the better of him. I'm still yet to see Trippier be taken to the cleaners by anyone. All our full backs get caught out positionally at times because of the way they have to play in getting up and down the pitch, even Davies and Trippier is no better or worse in that aspect. His defensive capabilities are absolutely fine....

That bit is true, but we are going to have very long CL and FA Cup runs so.....
