Toby Alderweireld

I think that despite injuries, Harry Kane has absolutely, beyond a shadow of a doubt proven his value over and over (we know this I know). We need him. He is what, 24? He battles through injuries. He will absolutely get a bumper rise because he has earned it and also shown loyalty. Toby is being offered a pretty fudging decent pay packet there but is holding out for a bigger pay-day. He is what, 29? Had two bad injuries the last two seasons? Sorry, I would look ahead too if an offer like the one we made was dismissed. I say let him get paid by PSG and be done with it, move on, etc...comparing Hazza and Toby right now is not a comparison IMO.

I'd be unhappy if he goes either way. It would however be easier to stomach if he goes to another league in another country. To sell him to one of our title rivals would be a very bad decision IMO. I'd completely understand if Toby asked for £180k a week for example and the club baulked at that. But I don't understand why both parties can't come to a middle ground and settle for say £140k or £150k. Sometimes I wonder why fans in general seem to take sides with owners or the club rather than the players.

I reckon he's gone. It's a big loss, one of the best defenders I've ever seen play, let alone for Tottenham. But! We've proved that we can handle life without him. If we can't afford his demands, then there's not much to do about it. You give one guy a raise like that, and they all want it. Not sustainable.

Sell him abroad in the summer. As much as I'd hate to see him leave, I can sort of understand his wish to cash in on his last contract (if I take my Spurs glasses off) - he's up there with the very best and could/should earn just as much as the very elite.

Double swoop for De Ligt and De Jong from Ajax and we've got a good foundation.

But this will have to happen eventually if we are to keep pace with our rivals. I get there is a trickle down effect of raising the wage bill but it shouldn't be a problem provided the club still manages the wage structure as a hierarchy. For example, I'd fully expect Kane to earn more than anyone else at the club. If Ben Davies or Serge Aurier want a pay rise and to have parity with Kane then we'd have to firmly but politely tell them that Kane is the highest paid for a reason and they can't have the same amount as him. No different than it is at most clubs in football really.

We've just announced a profit of £40m I believe. The tv money flooding into the game is higher than it has ever been and will only increase in the foreseeable future. The whole point of increasing the capacity of WHL was to increase revenue for things like transfers and wages, and obviously to put the club in a stronger financial position.

I also don't agree that we have proved we can handle life without him. We'll get by in most games because we are a very good team and go into most games as favourites but I do believe we missed him big time against Juve. Not blaming Sanchez or anyone else individually for the goals but I fail to see how Toby's presence and experience alone couldn't have helped us. He's what 29? Sanchez is still only 21 and you need all the experience you can get against street wise teams like Juve. Not too mention the understanding he has with Vertonghen.

Remember the group and their camaraderie is of paramount importance to Pochettino.
When a 'senior' player has a very long and protracted contract negotiations and shows where his true priorities lie i.e. money. That player runs the risk of by his very actions of alienating himself from Pochettino core ethic.

Yes it's a job and good luck to Toby or anybody who want to earn more and go elsewhere but it has consequences.

Maybe not £180k a week but I definitely think we should be prepared to go close to it, say £150k a week. That would still make him one of the highest paid CB's in Europe. We just announced a profit of £40m IIRC? What's the point of going through the hassle of demolishing WHL and redeveloping it only to potentially lose 3 of our 4 first choice defenders over the last couple of years in the space of two summers? I guess I just can't believe how casual some of you are being about him leaving, especially if we sell him to City or United who have average/old centre halves.

Let's not forget one of the reasons we lost to Juve was because we were not quite good enough defensively. I fail to see how the addition of Toby to our back line wouldn't have made at least some difference.
I think he’s worth £150k. Maybe even £180k in the open market if the right club comes in for him.

But £150k is probably a step too far for us

We lost that game because we didn’t take our many chances

But I agree we could have defended better

All good points. I'd say we don't really know enough about the economy of the club to really be able to argue for Toby getting the wages he demands. Levy sticks by his principles for a reason, and it has worked well for us in the past. If it was up to me, we could just sell say Sissoko and spend the money on Toby's wage bill, but I'm sure the matter at hand is much more complicated than that. I'm sure raising the wage bill if necessary is part of the plan that comes with the increased income from the new stadium, but surely we've got loans to pay back for getting the stadium in the first place that doesn't make us directly comparable to say Scum from day one of the new stadium. It was said that Scum had paid all their debts for Emirates a couple of years ago, over 10 years since it was finished (which was when they really started spending big cash).

But what do I know. I'd love to keep Toby at all cost, I personally think he's worth it - but I simply don't know the bigger picture, and I'm sure none of us from the outside really can tell how we're dealing with this situation or why. From a fan point of view I'm all for signing him up, obviously, but I'm sure we have our reasons for not just splashing the cash on the table as well.

Maybe Toby wants to go to a club where he’s getting paid fantastically well and almost guaranteed to win trophies? He’s at the latter stage of his career and there’s no guarantees with our project, whereas there is with some of the European powerhouses.....

If that were true then I couldn't really blame him for moving on.

Toby looks like he is repeating what he did at his previous clubs.
The writing was probably on the wall last summer and that's why Sanchez was bought.

We knew where we stood when we signed the contract hence the release clause /extension in the contract, however since then the market has moved massively making the £25M for a 29 yr old go from seeming like crazy money to reasonable.

Cant complain though as we went in with eyes wide open.

Complain?
Nothing further from my thoughts.
Was thinking "There is no 'I' in team" could have been written by Poch. I love these type of team ethics.

Trophies at clubs like Bayern and PSG must be so hollow though. Where failure is winning the league by less than a 20 or 30 point gap.

Maybe when hes been there years, not when he personally hasnt won any silverware for years. Be realistic.....
