Toby Alderweireld

“Davinson is so disappointed. I think it wasn’t his intention to put the elbow in his [Richarlion’s] face. The decision was the decision, and we can change nothing now

“The important thing was the team always was with the character to go forward and try to win the game.”

Sanchez’s dismissal came after Son Heung-min had cancelled out Christian Kabasele’s opening goal, and though Watford pressed for a winner when their opponents were reduced to 10 men, they failed to beat Hugo Lloris a second time

I was there and again it was a poor call form the ref

No intent and an elbow in the face because their player pushed his arm up

There's a difference between Alderweireld situation and the likes of Carrick, Berbatov, and Modric. They wanted to leave when we were brick.

Even Walker had been here 10 years.

As for Alderweireld, it would be a shame if he missed the World Cup ;)

If anything, I do believe we were the ones who were pressing for a winner.

The odd mistake from Sanchez hasn’t cost us a result in the league at least (the ref made the errors vs arsenal)
We played awful against Woolwich. Harley was actually the stand-out player. But he has made mistakes which we were lucky didn't cost us (the one against Rondon aside). Nevertheless, I think next season he'll be even better. Maybe an 80-85% Toby inching up as the season progresses. I'll take that any day.

Listen, we've done well without Alderweireld. And if we sell him, we'll survive, just as we did when we sold Gazza, Teddy, Berbatov, Modric, Bale etc etc and just as we will if Kane, Eriksen or whoever ends up leaving.

It doesn't mean I want him to go though and we'll be weaker for it. He is one of the top 2/3 cbs in the league, without a doubt for me. And he is so experienced.

Still, I find it difficult to get too upset at anyone tbh. He (and his agent) rightly view him as one of the best cbs in the world most likely. The best cbs in the world earn almost 200k and win trophies regularly. So fair play to him. Ramos, Pique, Chiellini, VVD (lol) etc.

At the same time, if Levy feels we can't countenance that, then we can't. We have to stay within our financial means.

We'll definitely need another cb though. If Vertonghen is out, I don't feel confident with any other combination, especially if we're playing a top team.
Different times when we lost Gazza et al, but I get your point. Though I do not agree we will survive as well if we lose Eriksen (cue @parklane1 here :D), but then again, who knows. Although he does seem like someone who really appreciates the environment he is in and not likely to agitate for a move, especially if we give him a good salary raise in the near future. Of course the way salaries are going, maybe that too will seem like peanuts compared to other sides. We shall see...

I kind of believe Pochettino when he says Alderweireld is being left out for footballing reasons. It's not just Sanchez, though Alderweireld could obviously replace him in the lineup. The other option is to go to a back three, dropping either Dembele or Lamela and Son (one misses out either way). Samchez, Dembele, Son and Lamela have arguably all done enough to warrant a start over someone lacking in match fitness after a long injury. Even someone as awesome as Alderweireld.

FTFY. I think the potential upside for Sanchez is incredible, he's not far from Alderweireld's level now, I'm confident he'll surpass him quite quickly.

It seems that in Poch's eyes he may already have.
Alderweireld was being talked about as the best centre back in the league. One of the best in the world. True world class stuff. To surpass that, and quickly (at 22-23?) will take something very special.

He is worth the wages, but then Kane would be worth 400,000 a week, Eriksen 250,000 a week and Dele would be getting 100 plus a week. Would cost millions and set the club back. We would probably get some back by asking for money back from Sissoko and Aurier who have stolen a living off us.

Eriksen would be 375,000 imho

Now 'they' are saying similar about Vertonghen, that's the media for you. They are fickle and if Davidson has a good start to the next season they will be gushing all over him.
What is true is Spurs have a good defence. The media are correct in one aspect of this, Pochettino and his guys are a fine football coaching outfit!
Now that is a fact!

Reliable and world class defenders like Alderweireld are hard to find nowadays. We will be making a big mistake if we let him go. Not sure if Sanchez will become as reliable as Alderweield but he still lacks the experience of a top quality defender.

What's your plan to keep him?

Levy will not pay him PSG wages and he will NOT get a 'lengthy' contract. My best guess 2 years extension and £120k pw tops.
We will bring on Foyth and invest in a younger centre back as Yan successor.
Yan deserves top wages also as the senior player in that position and has been outstanding this season, yet again.

If, as rumoured, we've offered £130k per week, and I'd imagine a 3 year deal, then thats pretty fair. We're not going to be in a position to pay a CB something like £180k - £200k so if he wants that then he needs to move to one of the few clubs (Man C, Man U, Real, Barca, PSG, Bayern etc) who can pay that sort of amount to a CB, but then he is obviously takes the risk of settling, getting on with the manager, gelling with the players, adapting to new location etc etc etc

Pochettino was still playing up the seriousness of the injury in his pre-match presser, wasn't he? If it's having that much of an impact, and he's not being deliberately frozen out, it's going to have a significant effect on the story in the summer, surely? Maybe the big offers won't be forthcoming.

This Toby that failed at Atletico and could fail elsewhere
He has comfortably had his best football here under the right coach
Sanchez has everything to be better than Toby as he has more physical attributes such as height and pace and is playing at a much higher level like for like age wise

He's a great player but I think that it is probably the right time to sell him. We can get £40-50m to reinvest in the squad and he can get the final payday that he thinks he deserves. I'd be overjoyed if he wanted to stay and we could afford him but I don't think that we should be breaking our pay structure for a defender, no matter how good.

I keep flip flopping on this contract business - i think we can have a real go at winning the title next season and with Alderwiereld in the team the chances of that happen are greater than if he wasn't - i don't think it'll be our only chance in the coming years and i get the arguments against caving in to a players demands, especially if the numbers are correct but i just can't shake the feeling we can win the league next year with this squad
