Toby Alderweireld

Did any of you actually see his performance for Belgium vs Saudi Arabia? I'll be kind and say his performance was shaky!!
So him not even being in the matchday squad might be entirely down to form (or rather lack of it). Based on the international and the cup game he played for us, I wouldn't pick him, and if he has been on a similar (low) level in training, who can go against Poch not picking him.

He might well want out and be sold this summer, but that's not the reason he's out of the team atm.

I don’t think anyone outside of Toby, his advisors, agents etc, Levy, Poch and Toby’s family really knows what’s happening. My gut feeling is he will go as we’ve seen this happen before and more often than not it leads to the player ultimately going. If he does go I hope we don’t do anything silly like sell him to a top 4 rival.

Real Madrid reported to be looking at him now

I think the can get more for Varane than the cost of Toby and get a player in for 2/3 years

I think it’s uncertain because there isn’t an obvious move for him yet. With Walker and City, he wasn’t really going anywhere else.

It may be that after all the serious options are assessed, he may think it’s rhe best thing to do to stay here. It’s a slightly awkward position Toby but the team clearly isn’t affected, and Sanchez has stepped up admirably. I can see why we aren’t moving the earth to keep him, because we may not need to.

considering there is all this talk about him leaving i think the vast majority of fans are handling it all well. There doesnt seem to be any anger towards Toby at all, no vitriol, nothing. So what is the harm about talking about what may or not happen

No harm as long as it's not the same points being made over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and ov

There might not be an obvious move for him in your opinion, but I’d bet Toby knows the clubs that are in for him. Literally everyone knows about his release clause and you can be rest assured clubs have been in touch with his agent from quite some time ago. Man Utd, PSG, Real Madrid are some of the clubs that have been mentioned and they are the type of clubs you’d expect would want him. You really think he’s going to assess all those and then decide to stay here? You say we don’t need to move the earth to keep him and I can partly agree, but for one he is still a better player than Sanchez and whilst I am all for player development in order to win things we need to keep our established stars as they have the experience and know how - I’m not sure how sustainable it will be for us to operate at the very top level whilst getting rid of our important players in their peak age of around 28? Also if Sanchez or Vertonghen were to get injured things don’t look quite so bright in that area...

But Toby is 29

And I don’t think we’re getting rid of players at their peak

It’s just in this case it looks like one players wants to get more money than we can offer him and he is at an age where we can’t commit more to him

That’s a sensible policy for us in our current financial state

Only clubs happy chucking money around will offer a 29 year old the highest wages on the world and a 4/5 year contract to match

I’d say 29 is a peak age for a CB? I think we will always find this issue around that sort of age, as essentially that’s the age where you’d say a player has one guaranteed large contract left in him?

I’m not critical of our policy, we work brilliantly within our means - it’s just a concern as some of our players are now approaching this sort of age that we tend to release them in their peak years. Can we always rely on the younger players to perform to the same standard? Sanchez is a good start, will be interesting if we consistently get the replacements in key areas right...

We will have them all tied up for their peak years

Don’t forget Jan is older and happy to stay...

Hugo is older and tied up to a contract

The issue with Toby is he on his original contract and has turned down everything we have offered it seems. What can the club do there

Walker was an opportunity for the club (one j wouldn’t have sanctioned but I get why the club did it).

Rose may or may not get sold but that has a lot to do with his off field comments

We will seek the likes of sissoko I believe who is at that age but that’s because we need better quality

How long does Jan have left on his contract? Anyway, you’ve reassured me a little thanks. I just don’t want to consistently see our top players get to that sort of age then leave....

Jan gets it I think, stay here and be a legend. Look at the regard we the fans have for ex players like dawson and JD.
That means more to Jan than some extra shekels and being just another player at a big club.
Same for Hugo.

Jan will also get a good pay rise though and I expect him to be here for another 2/3 years

it happens all the time, its really no big deal.......we do the same with players we are linked to, always looking for clues, signs, speculation, to see if there is a chance a top player may be joining us. Its all part of the game

Indeed, its called the Guessing game ( usually without any substance).

Alderweireld likely to leave
However it's not all good news, with The Mirror one of a couple of papers to report that Toby Alderweireld looks likely to leave the club in the summer. He was left out of the squad for the historic victory over Chelsea and has interest from the Blues, Manchester United and PSG as he chases wages of around £180,000-a-week.

Maybe it is true, may it is not, but if it is, and I have no evidence to support that this is what he is asking for, then there is no way Levy would agree a contract like that for Toby

As much as I'd love Toby to stay, if he must leave, I think this move makes sense for all parties. I also feel better about this considering that it seems to be signed off (driven?) by Pochettino, and I'm always in favor of backing this manager, even if it'd be painful to lose a great player like Toby.

-PSG gets an elite central defender to replace Thiago Silva to go with Marquinhos and Kimpembe.

-We get a great fee (40-50 mil) for a player who doesn't want to stay that we won't have to play in the Prem. Should be able to get an elite young centre back replacement that Poch likes to back-up Sanchez/Vertonghen and have a little bit left over for new contracts for Verts, Eriksen, Kane, etc. Could also potentially open up a route to the first team for Carter-Vickers or Tanganga if either are ready.

-Keeps up our strong relationship with PSG, which unlike Real Madrid, has actually borne fruit over the last few years.

-Toby gets one more great contract, plus guaranteed domestic trophies and a potential shot at a CL Trophy.

-Bonus points for annoying United fans who all seem have Toby penciled into their team for next season.

My concern is not about Toby leaving as I think that is now a given, but rather as to who we sell him to
My concern is more about who we bring in if he leaves. Sell him for a king's ransom to Yanited, whatever, but bring in the next future Ledley.
